Keep in mind that these are bootlegs. All the usual caveats in buying them apply.

I'm new to this, so please explain how the Bootleg cds would differ from other types. It is so-o discouraging not to be able to find proper high quality FKB cds while there are lots of other 50's shows available out there.

If Jeff is the same Jeff who sold tapes a few years to some of us who are in the chat room for FKB at TVLAND.com, they were of excellent quality. When I ordered mine, we didn't have a dvd player so I chose the tapes. If only I'd planned ahead knowing we'd eventually get a dvd player!!

...16mm syndicated prints, with the Screen Gems "tube" i.d. ('54-'57) and the Screen Gems/Columbia "Lady With the Torch" i.d. ('57-'60) at the end. "Kathy Makes Magic" is an original NBC network print {July 1956 repeat of a fall 1955 episode} with the original Scott Paper Company sponsor i.d. {you'd see the Anderson house at the beginning with 'Scott Paper Company Presents' over it, and the announcer saying, "Scott Paper Company takes PRIDE in presenting..."} and commercials.

I'd grab it!

I can tell you about the 96 episode set since I bought these from this man (and a 150 episode set as well, from somebody else).

The episodes are definitely of "mixed" quality, to put it nicely. They were originally taped from TV broadcasts and have been duplicated and traded among traders. Who knows who it was that made the original DVD's?

A couple of the episodes are cut off at the beginning or ending. For example, "Margaret Goes Dancing" has the last 6 or 7 minutes cutoff. "Advantage To Betty" has the opening credits and some of the beginning of the episode cut off. I haven't looked at all of them, there may be others.

(Fortunately, on the 150 episode set, these episodes are intact, so I finally get to see how these episodes end! I can copy the DVD's to my computer and between the two sets, I can piece together something with new menus, and pick the better quality of duplicated episodes.)

Go to the website www.ioffer.com, then to DVD's and movies, search for "Father Knows Best" and you will see several individuals, including this one, selling FKB taped off of TV.

Someone else on that website is offering a 150 episode set of FKB. I carefully checked the list of episodes and discovered that there are only about 137 original episodes, about 13 are duplicated in the list.

Some of the DVD's in this set have the episodes recorded as all one long file, not authored into a menu. To get to individual episodes past the first one, you must fast search past the earlier episodes, which can take 5 or 10 minutes easily. There is no sub-menu of episodes where you can go directly to the opening of a particular episode.

There are 5 episodes on the 96 episode set that are not on the 150 episode set. If you got both sets, that would make a total of 142 episodes., with some duplicates.

The quality of these homemade DVD's is very uneven. A couple episodes are too dark, a couple have washed out highlights. One had such a low volume that I had to turn the TV literally all the way up to hear, and then there was a lot of "hiss" in the audio. Some have a greenish tint in the video. Also, a few episodes had broad, lighter colored bands rolling up through the picture. This was some kind of interference from when the original person taped the episodes. Quite a few were taped off of Nick At Nite, and the ending credits had that split-screen thing that NaN uses, and voice overs over the music on the ending credits.

No way would I rate them as a 7 out of 10. In my opinion, most of them are a 4 or 5, maybe some are a 6.

Nevertheless, with all those negative comments, I am still glad I have the discs. My father is 86 years old and lives in a small apt. in an assisted living home. I have taken some of the discs when I visit, and we watch FKB. After we watch a couple of episodes he says "I really enjoyed watching that" and comments about how the show is thousands of times better than the garbage they show as sitcoms today.

It is hardly necessary to say, if FKB was available on DVD, I would have never had to go this route. If there were a channel that was still broadcasting FKB, I know I could make my own DVD copies that would be much better than this. But I, like you, have no other option until the day that FKB is released on DVD. When that day comes, I will happily, happily fling these bootlegs into the nearest trash.
