View Full Version : bad news regarding season 2, Laverne and Mork from HTF
Dean Winchester 07-29-2005, 09:12 AM I read this on Home Theater Forum from a poster who has Paramount connections
So I talked to my friend. It appears future releases for these series have been cancelled because of music rights issues. Apparently "Happy Days" season 2 would cost several million in music rights alone. Whether or not they decide to release them with replaced music is unknown, but as of right now... they're dead in the water.
tiff7 07-29-2005, 05:24 PM AUGHHH!!! Come on, let's send Paramount some hate mail about not havin't the rest of HD, L&S, M&M, etc!
Tiff7
Have a gr8 weekend y'all! Hope everyone is enjoying the heat! (I'm not)
TripperFan 07-29-2005, 05:42 PM Don't panic! They might be able to change the music. I bought an Andy Griffith DVD before they had the rights to the whistling theme song (don't know why they would need them since the song was written for the show) - but they replaced it with other music.
I then bought Season I and it had the proper music to it.
Hang in there - same might happen for you! :)
robyrob 07-29-2005, 07:01 PM ok, with Happy Days, i can understand that they have a LOT of music that they'd need to acquire the rights for, but Laverne and Shirley and Mork & Mindy don't really have any music in them that would require licensing (well L&S might have a couple of songs, but NO WAY does M&M)
YoliUSA 07-29-2005, 07:20 PM :bsod: Man, those news suck. I just hope Paramount will release every season eventually. Anyway, I'll have to start taping Happy Days again, just in case.
dave insinga 07-29-2005, 09:51 PM i've said it before they are a bunch of cry babies they do know promotion ,no advertising for any of their dvds these shows are not costing them anything to make the cast isn't making much money on these old shows. so even if the package cost we the consumer a little more money wouldn't it be worth it to have these classic shows in their original state with the original music.and what about some of the latter seasons with less music.will we ever see them now?
Trishalla 07-30-2005, 12:31 AM I read this on Home Theater Forum from a poster who has Paramount connections
wow i'm really sad to hear that
I don't usually post on this board because I Really didn't watch the show much
sometimes once in a while
but I know how it is when you want your show on dvd and can't get it
and your stuck watching sliced and diced eps in reruns
that really sucks
Stormtracker TF 07-30-2005, 07:35 PM That REALLY bites if it's true. I hope not.
WilCap 07-30-2005, 07:44 PM This sucks! They do this with a lot of DVDs... makes me mad

I TOTALLY agree. My bubble's been bursted. I know some shows that end up having only one season available on DVD. It's too bad that Happy Days had to be one of them.
GeminiX1985 08-04-2005, 03:06 AM I heard about this from the L&S board, upsets me a lot. I just don't think that it's fair to start up something and then not finish it, that company has a helluva lot of money so IDK what they're problem is. All I know is that I went to the official site for Paramount, found an address; probably gonna write to them. If anyone else wants it, I got it.
dave insinga 08-04-2005, 10:14 AM but truthfully they don't care they are a huge company that cares about money and high profits i believe if season one sold better this music issue would be a minor thing and this maybe a situation with happy days but i believe that laverne and mork are just excuses because the season one sets of these didn't sell as well as paramount wanted.
Nipsey Russell 08-04-2005, 03:45 PM This is the same problem they're having trying to release The Wonder Years. I hope they don't take the shortcut someone suggested and use alternative songs. I want all the episodes to be in their original forms. Supposedly, they're working through all that with Wonder Years, so hopefull they can do the same for HD.
Classicshowsgurl15 08-04-2005, 04:59 PM Well so much for having any of the seasons out on dvd besides season 1. I have most of them on tape anyway, but it is nice to have them on dvd because there are no ads, they sometimes have special features and the color is better. Well I hope that they do get the music thing straightened out so we can see more seasons out.

Well it would at least show that we care what they're doing. And who knows, maybe if enough people would write, maybe they'd change their minds.
I thought that the first season sold pretty well actually, well of L&S.
YoliUSA 08-08-2005, 09:25 PM I just checked Paramount's website to see if they have any address to write them to. This is the address if someone wants to write them a letter (I know I will eventually):
Paramount Studios
5555 Melrose Avenue
Hollywood, CA 90038
Be sure to direct the letter to the Home Entertainment department.

Thanks, but what should I say on the letter?
GeminiX1985 08-08-2005, 11:28 PM Basically how you feel about the whole thing. How you "heard" that they were not putting the 2nd seasons out of, wait which show are you a fan of? lol I'm going to guess Happy days since this is the forum i'm posting on. But yeah, what I was going to do was just explain how I felt it was unfair to put out one season and then cancel it.

Thanks again. Think it'd also help if I write to Garry Marshall? LOL!
GeminiX1985 08-08-2005, 11:34 PM Heh, you're welcome! And Garry Marshall is awesome, not sure if he could do anything though :-\ I mean, it's always a good try but of course he's not in charge of if the other seasons of his two shows(I believe he only had two, haha)continue on DVD. . .Unless I'm wrong, lol. But I have heard from Cindy Williams that Paramount was working on it, that's what she had told a fan when they messaged her.
Thanks again. Think it'd also help if I write to Garry Marshall? LOL!

That's what Im planning to do too. I also thought of including the boards web address so they could see that people do have an interest on HD and L&S, but I dont think they would bother to visit the boards (I may be wrong though)
faraj 08-09-2005, 09:22 PM What's Gigli? Never heard of that TV show.
YoliUSA 08-09-2005, 11:23 PM What's Gigli? Never heard of that TV show.
Gigli was a movie that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck did together. It tanked at the box office.
GeminiX1985 08-09-2005, 11:41 PM Yup, I was gonna do that as well; put the links to this board and the L&S one. I think that the more people put the links in, they might be more interested to check it out. Never think that the impossible won't happen.

dave insinga 08-10-2005, 01:00 PM they did ok by most standards but not well enough for paramount.
bh7812 08-11-2005, 11:51 PM I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth on the fact right now it is unlikely we'll see Season 2 of Happy Days. I agree with just about everyone saying it stinks. I bought S1 and enjoyed it very very much. HD was a show I always wanted to see as many of the seasons as possible. I've seen episodes here and there, and was really looking forward to having the complete series. It is one of the best TV shows ever made in my opinion. There are so many other lousy shows not only getting onto DVD, but getting complete sets and that really disappoints me. I understand needing to get music clearance, and I would like seeing the original music used. Paramount would sell more than enough of each season to warrant releasing the entire series. It's not fair, or right to everyone wanting the entire series when they won't even release S2. I sincerely hope Paramount changes it's mind. Just wanted to add my opinion.
GeminiX1985 08-12-2005, 12:01 AM That's exactly how I feel about Laverne & Shirley. I think that Paramount should have at least looked in to all these warrants before even starting to put the shows on DVD; that way, fans wouldn't have to be let down.

faraj 08-22-2005, 12:10 AM I've been counting on getting the later Happy Days
eps. on DVD, and I was so sure that and the other spinoffs will continue the series on DVD. I told this to Gord from TVShowsOnDVD.com when I e-mailed him at gord@tvshowsondvd.com , and he said, "I don't think the first season sold very well :("
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2005, 12:22 AM They are stupid if they think people aren't going to notice or respond. Why oh Why must they do this crap??? Back in the days when VCR's came out, alot of shows lost out on $$$$ when all people had to do was record their shows. The companies and royalties are losing $$$ like that...so why not make the DVD's and at least people will PAY FOR THEM.
TV DVD Fan 08-22-2005, 12:31 PM All this crap goes to show you just how much the companies "care" about you. They dont care if you're happy, they care if you paid enough! Bottom line, they dont care about us. They care about our wallets a helluva lot though!
pat
dave insinga 08-22-2005, 01:54 PM people love these shows if they keep pulling this crap by starting stuff and not finishing it. people will stop buying there sets.why start something that you don't intend to finish.
spunkygirl 08-22-2005, 02:04 PM I'm gonna say Paramount seems to be damned if they do and damned if they don't. I mean if they don't release it cause of music rights, then people complain, if they were to release it with replaced music then people complain, honestly Paramount can't win with fans on this issue.
Also there's alot more to it than them just trying to get the rights, it's a long drawn out thing, sometimes the song writers won't allow their music to be used when a show is released on DVD, which is out of Paramount's hands if they do that. Plus if they shell out millions of dollars for music rights, then don't make that money back with the DVD release then they're losing profits, which no company wants to do that.
Go to the Home Theater Forum, they can tell you more about music rights and whatnot, it's not as basic as it sounds.
