It’s the news American Dreams fans have been dying to hear: The alternate ending series creator Jonathan Prince shot but never aired will finally see the light of day this summer, per NBC chief Jeff Zucker. “Thank you for reminding me about that,” Zucker tells me. “I’m going to make some phone calls about that tomorrow. It’s gonna happen.”

I guess we should be grateful for that, at least, if it happens. Jeff Zucker is/was a fan of the show, so I hope he wasn't just blowing smoke.

If it is true, this is probably the best news we've had all year.

If this final alternate ending does air this summer, I believe it is very important for all of the fans to spread the word and get as many people as possible to watch it.

If we all work together and get 25-30 million viewers, we may have an opportunity for NBC to reevaluate its decision to pull this program

One more time for American Dreams

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Fans left cold by the vague end in May of
NBC's family drama American Dreams, starring Tampa native Brittany
Snow, will get some closure.

Executive producer Jonathan Prince, talking Friday with a handful of
critics at the close of the Television Critics Association summer
meeting, said NBC has agreed to air a revamped series finale for the
show that was canceled in May. A broadcast of the re-edited one-hour
finale can be expected sometime in August or early September and
will include 12 minutes of new footage that will wrap up the series,
Prince said.

Snow, who has gone on to a movie career and is filming in Vancouver,
Canada, will figure prominently in the new ending. The new segments
pick up three years after viewers last saw Snow heading to Berkeley,
Calif. in 1966. She has changed, but she is ready to go home, Prince
said.

The extra minutes will conclude the series properly, he said. Still
undetermined is where and exactly when the finale will air, whether
it will be on NBC or on a sister station such as cable outlet Bravo.
Prince said the episode is complete, although some music fees have
to be paid for songs he has never used on the series.

"I promise you, there will be weeping," Prince said. "It is a
beautiful and sad thing to watch."

Prince said Dreams drew advertising dollars well throughout its run
and had broad critical support, but it never got the viewership
numbers it needed to keep NBC executives satisfied. The network was
getting "creamed" on Sunday nights, and the entire evening had to be
revamped from the network's standpoint, he said.

It was actually canceled in December, Prince said. As producer, he
told no one, and instead forged deals with Kraft foods to
incorporate Kraft cheese and Oreo cookies in two episodes, for a
fee, that ensured the show would finish out the season. Viewers who
remember the scene where a child makes a cheese mask out of his
slice can now know the shot was bought and paid for.

By March, as the shooting wrapped up, Prince said he had a bad
feeling. On the last days of shooting, he shot an extra 12 minutes,
without explaining to Snow or the others why they were going to have
to wear different clothes than they normally wore. It took a day and
a half to prepare, and then Prince said he put it aside.

It was his secret. He said he didn't want to let on to network
executives because there was still a chance the show could be saved
for a whole new season.

"I smelled a rat," Prince said. "I just sort of smelled the low
ratings."

So, this looks VERY GOOD!!

That statement implies what I have been suspecting all along about Meg in 1969: that she's going to come home as a disheveled hippie. I would not be surprised if she is pregnant.

So the show was actually canceled in December? Well, at least we got a semi-complete 3rd season.

I do not want to see a "quickly thrown together to please an audience who's favorite show has been cancelled throw the dog a bone" ending to a show that deserves so much more then that.

You all can watch it.

I prefer to think of my friends on American Dreams as living on, instead of being forced to do something and giving us "closure" because a show is being cancelled.

And now knowing, what I did not know before, and that is that when Meg got on the back of that motorcycle with that creep that she was gone for three years, I am sure devastating her entire family, and that she probably did that just so we could have 12 minutes of "closure", well, I am a little angry and more then a little upset.

I won't be watching.

I fully respect your opinion and stand on this issue, however, NBC has already stated that "American Dreams has been cancelled for the 2005-2006 season". Many of us believe that they may reconsider bringing it back for the 2006-2007 season, if we are persistent and dont "go away". Our ever growing boycott of NBC, all of its affiliates and sponsors will continue to grow, until they reconsider their decision. We want to hit them where it hurts-in the pocketbook. If we can show them that there still remians a strong support for American Dreams, either NBC or maybe another network will pick the show back up. Its worth the fight!! Its at least worth the effort!!

Good point, Tom. If the fans remain vocal in their support, maybe it'll pay off in the long run. I wonder how we can make this effort more visible. There are a few of us hard-core fans who chat back and forth, but it's going to take something much much bigger. I hope somebody out there can give us e-mail addresses for the show producer or NBC executives who make these decisions. And where's Dick Clark these days? Hope he's recovering OK, and I should think he'd give American Dreams some real solid backing.

I don't know if it will work but if you guys have any ideas to help bring the show back I'm in. :)

A large group of American Dreams fans are boycotting all NBC stations. I have e-mailed every NBC affiliate (and there are over 300 of them) letting them know that NBC and all of its affiliates are being boycotted until pressure is brought upon NBC to put this show back on the air.

I have also been contacting all companies that sponsor any NBC programming, informing them we are not going to buy their products if they continue to sponsor any type of NBC programming, including NBC, Bravo, USA, etc., unless they bring pressure on NBC to put this show back on the air.

Eventhough, the actors have picked up some new gigs, it is not uncommon for actors to have more than one iron in the fire at any given time. The actors want to continue to do the show.

The only chance we have is to keep fighting. In the sixties, during the same period of time that American Dreams takes place, we did not just accept everything that happenned. We fought for what we believed in. That is what we have to do now.

Lets take it to them!!

As far as I know, it hasn't been announced yet. I haven't heard a peep on any other AD message boards, anyway.
