Definitely Hawkeye he's a little crazy but
he's a dedicated doctor and a great guy. Hawkeye finds a way to make a joke out of the worst situations, I love that!

I agree totally with the other two (Hawkeye). When I was a kid I didn't care for the show, but after serving in Korea in the '70's, I can relate ! B.J. is runner up !

Cpl. Klinger for me!! He is so funny (his Section 8 schemes always make me laugh!), and I think he's cute :^)

"Colonel Potter sir, I'm Cpl. Klinger. A Section Eight from head to toe! I'm wearing a Warner bra. I play with dolls. My last wish is to be buried in my mother's wedding gown. I'm nuts, sir! I should be out!"

BJ: Tall and handsome. :eyes:

Charles: a complex character, brilliantly portrayed by David Ogden Stiers.

I would have to say all of them. For me, they all played thier parts perfectly, from Hawkeye down to Father Francis(Mulcahey)

Hawkeye will always be the "fan favourite" for the majority.

But, If I take Hawkeye out of the mix and choose from the remaining charectors, it seems like the decision should be simple. just pick 1. But I can't. though I lean toward Potter or Hunnicutt ( see, still can't pick 1)

I think I prefer Potter to Blake as a Col. and Beej to Trapper, Having said that. I loved Blake and Trapper , and I wouldn't trade Charles being on the show for anything, yet the Frank Burns days were when M*A*S*H was hilarious. It was still a great show when Frank left, and even when Radar left.

It just had so many great moments, and charectors.

Favorite Character: Hawkeye. He was very intelligent and witty and would at times even come out foolish just like all of us.

Then Winchester: He was pompous and arrogant but he wasn't an ******* like Frank Burns was! He was human and sometimes had silent redemption.

Then B.J., Potter, Henry, Frank were great too and Trapper was funny as hell!

One of the few shows were the replacement characters were just as good as the originals.

I think the replacement characters were even better than the originals. As for my favorite, it's between Houlihan, Klinger, and Potter. I got the biggest kick out of Klinger's outrageous costumes and Houlihan's temper tantrums, but they were all great. (I can't pick just one either.)

It's gotta be Maj. Frank Burns, of course. The "Heel" always makes the show. Without evil, there is no good.

Henry Blake and Frank Burns. I never used to like Frank, but after watching the first three seasons on DVD, his "You ... Guys!" insult to Hawkeye and Trapper is funny. Here's the order in which I like the characters:

01. Henry Blake (1972-1975)
02. Frank Burns (1972-1977)
03. Hawkeye Pierce (1972-1983)
04. Radar O'Reilly (1972-1979)
05. B.J. Hunnicutt (1975-1983)
06. Trapper John (1972-1975)
07. Margaret Houlihan (1972-1983)
08. Charles Emerson Winchester (1977-1983)
09. Maxwell Klinger (1972ish-1983)
10. Father Mulcahy (1972-1983)
11. Col. Potter (1975-1983)

Hawkeye of course, then Klinger, Radar, BJ, heck I liked all of them but Frank "ferret face" Burns

I didn't like Margaret until she got away from Frank and became a human being again :)

I didn't like Margaret until she got away from Frank...

Same here. After that, she became a much better person, one of my favorites even. But they did have some funny moments, both together and separately.

Since my earlier post, I've decided Klinger was my absolute favorite. Hawkeye could be hilarious too, especially when he was impersonating Groucho, but he could also be a cad. Klinger was almost always a scream and was never mean as far as I can remember.

Trapper, followed closely by Frank. Trappe was just that bit less cynical than Hawkeye, and Frank was really funny. Although I stayed with the show till the end, I never liked it so much after Trapper left, and it went really downhill IMHO after losing Frank.

I used to loathe BJ! i thought he was so not funny! and just a really bad replacement for trapper, but i got used to him,but NOTHING can replace the trapper.

I also agree, some of the funniest moments came from Hotlips and Frank

Actually, Maclean Stevenson was one of the funniest people to ever star on the show. He was a truly gifted comic actor.

I think Charles was my favorite. I thought his "upper-crust" attitude in such a (and I'll use one of his terms here) "cess-pool" of a place made for alot of funny moments. He was a great surgeon - sometimes pompous - but also didn't hide that he was human, even on the first day he was there, and he was a witty foil for Hawkeye's sometimes irritating self-righteousness.

My top three favorites are Radar, Charles, and Trapper.

I think BJ is finally starting to grow on me (Still hate the mustache!), but I still greatly prefer Trapper.

I like Frank, but I love Charles better. He had more depth. He also seems to be the only consistantly funny one in the last two seasons.

Early years Hawkeye is funny, but later seasons Hawkeye needed to be shipped home. I'm sorry, but he just gets on my nerves sometimes with his self-righteousness.

I like both Henry and Potter, but if I had to choose, I'd go with Potter. I think he's funnier and better at his job.

Klinger kills me. He really kills me

My dream MASH cast would be: Early Hawkeye, Trapper, Charles, Potter, Radar, Mulcahey, Klinger, and Margaret.

i like hawkeye and kellye shes just an interesting character even though you dont hear much about her.

I've been a serious MASH fan, much to my mothers chagrin (she hated it) ever since the series first aired but I just found this site, much to my chagrin (just spent 3 hours perusing the topics) I Know 2 things that most boards frown upon are 1 bringing up old threads and 2 posting repeating threads so I have to violate one of those here. In the interest of continuity I thought it would be most appropriate to keep everything together.

On to my favorite characters in no particular order

1-Radar- I love the chemistry he had with the other characters and how it seemed when Henry left, and after a minor glitch "stick that horn in your ear" he seemed to catch on with Potter as if nothing ever happened.

2- Frank Burns- I loved is off the wall put downs if you will. "Nertz to you" and stuff like that. I also liked that confused simpleton look he got so often.

3-Father Mulcahy- I just saw the show in season 9 last night with the visiting Cardinal and Patrick Swayze as the soldiers with leukemia. His sermon was great and I loved the Cardinals response as well. I liked how he could really turn into a tough guy when he wanted to but tried to do it so soft spokenly.

4- Klinger- "if you get them as a kid you don't get them as an adult, if you get them as an adult you don't get kids" Probably my favorite line of the whole series.

5- Charles- The only one who would stand up to Hawkeye (I'll get to him on the Least favorite character thread) He was a pompous jerk who could be very sensitive at times. One of my favorite episodes was the one where he give the chocolates to the children. That episode also had one of my favorite scenes with Charles and Klinger at the end.

6- Henry- I was going to styop at 5 but I had to put Henry in here. Stevenson was so funny I don't see how anyone could prefer Potter to Blake

If I had to limit it to 5 I would take out Mulcahy just because he seemed to have such a smaller role.

Father Mulcahy - He could be tough when he had to be, compassionate when necessary, and was respected by everyone in camp. He was able to fit in with everyone though he was neither regular army nor medically trained. Yet in all this he was very human. Throwing a temper tantrum when he was passed up for promotion, punching a patient in post-op, and doing business with the black market.
