View Full Version : My Mom said this was the main reason she stopped watching Good Times in 1976
TVFactFan 07-25-2005, 12:26 PM Because there was never ever any type of financial growth. Just the same ole "we ain;t got no money" and we can't pay this, and all them still living in that one apartment. My mom said what was wrong with the producers having the Evans family move out the projects, not necessarily the ghetto. And that way viewers would have seen improvements from season to season instead of J.J, being a advertising art Director and still living in the projects.

Your mother has a point. Onec in a while, it would be good to seem them have a little financial growth. Another thing I noticed was that J.J. in the end had better jobs than James.

Viewers proably were tired of about feeling happy for the Evans and then all of a sudden something bad happens again. Same cycle over and over

Maybe the show thought if the Evans had some money, it wouldn't be funny. Some people are always poor.

The Jeffersons had money and was funny.

And George Jefferson started out with nothing. "Born the son of a share cropper..." George turned his life around and made something of his self. I think he had a lot more drive and ambition than James Evans.
Philip Drummond from Diff'rent Strokes is another example of a show being funny with rich people.

Good Times is no longer in my top ten show list. I lost interest in the show as I became older. It's in the same category as All in the Family where it's not a fall back show since it has too many serious episodes. Shows I would take over Good Times in 2013
George Lopez
Fresh prince
Married with Children
Family Matters
Cosby Show
Roseanne.

I can handle a sitcom about a family in the "working poor" category but not just DIRT POOR LOL:lol:
Damm, mother wasn't working, father working 3 jobs below minimum wage LOL

But you never saw those people poor at first.

I know but after a while you just get tired of watching a show about someone getting evicted or not having any money for food.
When I watch TV shows I want to fall back on the bed and laugh

I wounder how many people can watch the show today the way the economy is,it hits too close too home. I know the economy wasn't real good in the 70's but it's worse today.

The current economy does make the show seems current but I guess since I have come across so many other shows during the years that were more upbeat, I started losing interested in Good Times
Plus the fact that the father is only on the show for half of the series is another reason why I can't watch anymore

I would take Roseanne over Good Times but honestly I think it lasted too long. I think it went downhill when "the second Darlene" came in and especially when John Goodman left! Family Matters also lasted a bit too long.

There was a second Becky, not a second Darlene.

This show can never be in my all time favorites because the father left the show who to me was the star

Do you mean James Evans being the star of Good Times or Dan Conner being the star of Roseanne?

James Evans
*ROGER* 05-06-2013, 07:19 PM James Evans
OK, I don't think Good Times was ever as good as it was with James Evans. I also thought he was the star of the show, not J.J.

It was still watchable after he left but not as entertaining
