This is the thread where those of us with a keen eye can discuss footage on UM which was used several times (not including of course Stack's closing monologues) - I can think of one right offhand in the case of Nyleen Kay Marshall there is a scene of rescue workers supposedly searching the Elkhorn Mountains for the missing girl, one of the rescue workers in the foreground cups his hands over his mouth and yells "Nyleen". This footage also showed up several other times including the Tommy Gibson case where the footage was overdubbed so that the rescue worker would shout "Tommy" instead of "Nyleen"

Although this might be a trivial topic to some I think it might be fun to see how many of these we as a group can come up with. With Nyleen Kay Marshall being abducted in Clancy, Montana and Tommy Gibson disappearing in Oregon - that rescue worker sure got around ;)

Motorcyle gangs seem to get around a lot on UM. I was recently watching the Amy Billig case and noticed they used clips from the Gus Hoffman case. (They also used footage from the story of the motorcyclist with the beard who disappeared and whose body was later found in a ravine with a lot of his t-shirts in Santa Barbara, Calif. I can't remember his name right now...)

Oh! And in the Dennis Depue update they use a chase scene from an earlier episode. You'll notice that Dennis' brown van turns into a white pick-up truck half-way through the chase! :D

I believe i have also seen Gus Hoffman's mother (or the woman portraying her in the segment) with the big teased hair also appeared in a few other "motorcycle" segments (perhaps Billig?)

Not too sure about the "Nyleen rescue worker" being in the Rosenblum segment although the footage might originate from this shoot cause the bluff looks familiar when compared to the Marshall shoot. There is definatley no guy in the forefront calling out a name though as he climbs the bluff in the Rosenblum segment to my knowledge.

Now a question for Justin cause he has a pretty good eye: Talking about two segments - Nyleen Kay Marshall and Judy Hymes. Both feature a guy making a telephone call from a telephone booth in a dark secluded area. Regarding the Hymes case this is not the more famous "Living in Omaha" call but the one made by the male informent claiming he worked for a radio station in Omaha. In the Marshall case you can clearly here the man say (referring to Marshall) "Yeah she is out here in the car with me" or something like that while in the Hymes case the actor's audio is all but inaudible (you can barely hear something like "Judy Hymes who disappeared..." before it trails off) - You can also see a car drive by in the Hymes segment but no vehicle is visable in the Marshall segment.

My question is obvious - is this the same actor/from the same shoot? - Big bonus points to anyone who can answer this

Yeah, I've definitely seen the actress who played Gus' mother in the Amy Billig segment. They have used the shot of the bikers coming around the corner in numerous segments as well.

In the 2001-02 intro, the scene shown as "MISSING" is on the screen of searchers looking through the woods - I've seen that many times in the Missing Persons segments.

In the story about the escape from Alcatraz they used a very very short clip from the Escape From Alcatraz movie. Thought that was kinda funny. :lol:

It's fairly common for them to reuse old footage, most likely to save some costs even though the clips were short.

They have the classic update one with the bald guy with glasses walking up to a cubicle.

"Due to the response of our callers..."

If that's what you meant by reused.

I know of one - In the Cindy James segment, when Stack talks about how her harrasment started to sky rocket after the threatening telephone calls began (at night she heard prowlers, her porch lights were smashed and her phone lines were cut) they show a picture of a house at night, which I'm assuming is supposed to be one of the several houses she lived in Vancouver.

Flash forward to the Patsy Wright segment - she was the woman that died when she took some cold medicine that was laced with strychnine - the scene flashes to the exact same house used in the Cindy James case when Patsy calls her sister to come help her right before she passes out. Maybe they moved the house from Vancouver to Texas. ;)

By the way, I couldn't agree with you more about the clip from the Nyleen Kay Marshall segment where the search party is climbing that mountain. UM seems to use that scene every time there is a segment about a missing person.

I agree that the search scene is familiar in the Nyleen case and I remember it from the Tommy Gibson segment as well as others but I rewatched her segment last night and noticed that one of the searchers in the scene yelled "Nyleen". Maybe UM "tweaks" these scenes a little to make each one fit the story.

In the segment about Heather Tallchief and Roberto Solis, when they are showing stock casino footage, we see a quick shot of a man in a tuxedo playing a slot machine. That clip was taken from an UM unsolved murder case. I don't remember the name of the victim, but it was an elderly woman who disappeared on the day of her son's wedding. The reason the clip caught my eye is because of the tuxedo. Most people don't dress nearly that formal when they are playing the slots.

This is nothing new. In fact, there have been a lot of shows (especially shows from the '70s and '80s) that used what's commonly known as "stock footage". This includes footage recycled from previous episodes. This kind of practice has been done as means of saving time and money, especially since a TV show's shooting schedule tends to be tighter than the shooting schedule for a movie.

One good example of a TV series using stock footage (or archive footage) is The Incredible Hulk. Footage from the movies Airport 1975 and Duel were used as stock footage in the episodes "747" and "Never Give a Trucker An Even Break", respectively.
