View Full Version : What is with these stupid browsers?!
dawsongirl 07-20-2005, 10:39 PM Both the computer at work and my laptop do this. I'll be looking around the web and go to some random page, and suddenly IE just closes the window. If I try that same page again, it closes. It just will not open the page. Just now I tried opening page 2 of the Bad Habits thread and closed goes the window. Yesterday at work, I tried to look on Amazon at this one book 4 times, but the window just kept erroring and closing. The other day, it would not open Target's website. Is this some stupid IE glitch? Anyone else suffer from this annoyance?
swedeace 07-20-2005, 10:47 PM Yeah, that's happened to me on a couple of these threads. Argh. It was annoying! I then had to try some minutes later and finally it worked.
Not sure what could be causing this...
Hollow 07-20-2005, 10:50 PM i've noticed that every time i open a page on this site that a certain user posted on, my browser causes an error and has to close. I KNOW you're all thinking i'm probably mistaken, i thought i was too at first, but it's gone on long enough and i've done enough investigating to confirm it. i don't know what causes it, they don't have an insane amount of smileys in their signature or anything. i put them on my ignore list and it stopped, and when i click on the "view post" thing and read the post, it happens again. it happens on both of my computers. i don't get it.

It just happen to me also,I was on a post and it closed up andmy computer shut down, but it did not go off internate. It has done it on some other web pages also,I thought mabe I don't have a firewall.

I can only view that page because the person i just mentioned who posted on it is on my ignore list. just now i tried to view the post, and my browser closed. i guess something about their settings or something could be causing a problem to other people too.

That is so weird. And confusing.

somebodys posts on here always make my AOL browswer freeze and i always have to open a new one. it's weird. and frustrating.
PZelda 07-20-2005, 11:21 PM I have the same problem when I use Firefox at my dad's (not here, thank god...I would go bonkers). For some reason when I try to go to Yahoo TV or TV Guide's websites, Firefox crashes on me. My dad's computer is from March 2005 -- very new, so I don't understand why it constantly crashes. I set it up the exact same way I have it here.
Mr. Television 07-20-2005, 11:26 PM Theirs a user on here that causes my computer to freeze and IE to close but I got them on ignore and its fine now.
Hollow 07-20-2005, 11:43 PM Ok, i've spoken with two people in this thread, and it's the same user causing technical problems for all of us. i didn't mention the name earlier, but it's IMakeBurgers. i don't know why, but every time i open a page she posted on, my browser freezes and all of my IE windows close.
swedeace 07-20-2005, 11:50 PM I just tried the second page of "Your Bad Habits" and...yup... I got kicked off!
Here's the error I did a print screen of:

Yep, this has happened to me as well. I have her on ignore and it doesn't give me any problems, now.
MsOrange 07-21-2005, 11:10 AM i was going to make a post asking if somethign was wrong w/ SO cause it seems to make my browser crash
EmoJoe 07-21-2005, 11:11 AM SO has been going kinda slow for me latley...it only crashes for me sometimes, usually it just goes really slow.
TripperFan 07-21-2005, 11:17 AM So I'm NOT crazy!!! I thought it had something to do with the wireless keyboard and mouse we just installed, but if its happening to this many people - I get the EXACT same thing - I'll be going along fine and then just crash. I hadn't noticed a pattern of it being on threads that had that other user on it, but could this be some sort of virus or worm that's trying to be spread?
It's been really annoying and is part of the reason I haven't been on as much the last week or so.
dawsongirl 07-21-2005, 02:37 PM :cuss: It just did it to me in the survey thread. This is :censored: me off.
TripperFan 07-21-2005, 02:49 PM :cuss: It just did it to me in the survey thread. This is :censored: me off.
I went to IMakeBurgers profile and clicked on the threads they posted on, and it immediately shutdown. For some odd reason, it does seem to happen in threads they've posted on and not others. I've never heard of anything like it. It just started doing it this week too.
James"Thunder"Early 07-21-2005, 02:52 PM You know, I had the same problem with Yahoo a few weeks ago, so I just switched to Firefox and other browsers. I finally did a system restore and it was fine. I'll do some checking around and see what I can find out.

Yeah, after reading these posts, I am finding myself first closing out of my browser windows with my email or forums I am posting on because this error will actually kick me off them completely. Therefore, I do not want to lose my work or writing. It's getting serious, unfortunately. It DOES sound like some sort of a unknown or uncaught virus or something.
Speaking of all of this, I wonder what IMakeBurgers thinks about this? It must suck for all of this to be happening. Does it occur when this person reads his/her thread, too? Poor person. :(
James"Thunder"Early 07-21-2005, 02:54 PM I just tried it and it did the exact same thing to me

Yeah - I hesitated posting that because I don't want anyone thinking we're trying to be mean and gang up - I certainly don't - I like that user, but its just the fact that it does seem to be happening after their posts.
Maybe the admins can figure something out. I don't think anyone's doing anything on purpose - its just some strange happening.

So it does the same thing using Firefox then? hmmmmm - does sound like some weird virus or worm.
James"Thunder"Early 07-21-2005, 03:03 PM So it does the same thing using Firefox then? hmmmmm - does sound like some weird virus or worm. :confused:No, I switched over to IE and checked the profile it did the same thing. It has to be an Active X control problem, because it doesn't happen in Firefox
dawsongirl 07-21-2005, 03:03 PM This defies explanation. Well, any explanation I could understand anyway.
swedeace 07-21-2005, 03:08 PM My guess is it has to be stored in SO's server database within this person's profile through the database.
Hmmm... *tries to think of possible troubleshooting ideas*
Am I the only one getting the error dialog box I posted on page 1? I am going to try and find the error number and do some research to see where it's coming from. If anyone else wants to help, I can post the log of it.

My work computer gives a little error box, but not like what you posted. It just says IEXPLORE will close now.

I get a similar one - with the boxes asking if you want an error report, etc.

Thats the person who was causing me problems. I Does it still effect you when you put her on ignore? When I did that the problem went away.
BTW I have nothing against this person either. This person's a good member. I'm just baffled as to why its happening.
dawsongirl 07-21-2005, 05:56 PM Ugh. Now tv.com did it.
*throws computer*
James"Thunder"Early 07-21-2005, 06:03 PM The quickest solution to the problem is to switch to Firefox or Opera. Both are quick to download and I'll give the links.

allison said she's having problems with firefux.
robyrob 07-21-2005, 07:10 PM well, I haven't been able to reproduce the problem in firefox OR Internet Explorer on any of my home or work computers, but I probably have my security settings tweaked a little higher than most people.
it seems to me that there is (or WAS) a corrupted file that is being referenced that is causing this crash, and because when IE (or any other browser) loads a page, it will always look to the cache saved on your computer FIRST, if that corrupted file is in there, it will keep crashing your browser.
I would suggest that anyone experiencing this specific problem clean out all your temp files (especially temp internet files and the downloaded active X programs) and reset your Active X security settings.
It also wouldn't hurt to update and run your antispyware programs...
PZelda 07-21-2005, 07:58 PM allison said she's having problems with firefux.
Not here, on my main computer. Firefox and IE are fine on this computer...but if I hop over to my dad's and use his computer there...I have problems. It doesn't happen here at SO though...just on Yahoo TV. Every time I launch Firefox AND IE to Yahoo TV, it makes both browsers crash.

it doesn't happen when you put her on ignore. you can still read the post by clicking on a "view post" link, but whenever i try that it happens again.

Yeah, I don't like putting anyone on ignore, but until this problem is resolved, that's how it's gonna be.
Mr. Television 07-21-2005, 09:55 PM I just hate putting them on ignore!! As you say - I like their posts. SH&T!!
. I've had very few people on ignore since I've been here so I don't like doing it either. I had no choice though.
TripperFan 07-21-2005, 10:25 PM Looks like I'm gonna have to. :(
I've never put anyone on it (it kills the curious kitty in me  )
Oh well - sorry Burgers!!!

I know how you feel, Cathie. That's what I was thinking, too. I've never really talked with IMakeBurgers, but I've seen their posts throughout various threads. I have nothing against them, but I guess this is going to have to be a temporary solution for the Ignore List thing. *sigh*
BTW, where are they? I haven't seen them here in a couple of days since...what...the Bad Habits thread.
MsOrange 07-21-2005, 10:45 PM did some people copmletely ignore Robby's post? I did it; and it fixed the problem for me
EmoJoe 07-21-2005, 11:26 PM Every time I go and post in the Charkony thread, this message comes up o_O Does anyone know what this is?

hmm i get that too, only on the 103rd page. apparently that "stuff on cats" picture was direct linked from a site you have to be a member of to view. but i'm confused because it looks like roby uploaded it on here and that prompt still comes up.

I'll have to try all that once I get back to work. I just cleaned out the temp folder, so that hopefull will help. Unless it's due to the network...

it was originally hot-linked, I uploaded it AFTER Joseph said he was having problems
it didn't make a difference though because Jack quoted a post with the original hotlinked pic - he needs to edit THAT post too :p

Dude111 12-20-2025, 10:09 AM Ya I could get a different browser but it woudnt be AS GOOD as MyIE2 :)
GoldenTV 12-21-2025, 04:16 AM Ya I could get a different browser but it woudnt be AS GOOD as MyIE2 :)
If MyIE2 is as good as you say it is, then why it is freezing
What I meant was you need a new PC. Even if installing new browser, you would still run into the same problem-if not more. Your PC (assuming using Win98se) don't have power or resources to run today's internet applications.
Your smart phone probably have more computing power and storage than your old PC
Dude111 12-21-2025, 04:22 AM Hmmmmm I dont have a smart phone and really dont want one buddy...... I dont wanna be spied on!!
TheLittleFaerie 01-02-2026, 07:52 AM It's almost like we can't LIVE without a smart phone. I panic more when I lose my smart phone than when I lose my wallet! Because so much is tied to it, everything at my job, my apartment rent, etc...
