He died in 1986, just a tiny bit after Too Close For Comfort was cancelled.

Actually, Too Close for Comfort hadn't been cancelled when he died. It had gone into syndication and had changed its name to "The Ted Knight Show." Everyone was supposed to begin filming the 1986-87 season, but Ted's doctors told him not to work. He died on August 26th, 1986, less than a month before I was born. :(

They were originally only supposed to do two years of "Too Close for Comfort" for first-run syndication (ABC cancelled it after three seasons) so they would have enough episodes for five-day-a-week reruns. But the new episodes were still so popular after the two-year syndication run that Ted and his producers decided to do a sequel series called "The Ted Knight Show" with a mix of original and new cast members from "Too Close". The original intent was to do another five years of first-run episodes, and then rerun those episodes five days a week. When Ted died shortly before the second year was supposed to begin production, the producers took the one season of "Ted Knight" episodes, retitled them, and added them to the "Too Close for Comfort" syndication package.
