View Full Version : Dave Allen fans?
My all time favorite Brit com is "Dave Allen at Large," which I used to watch in the late 70's and early 80's on KERA, the Dallas, Texas PBS station. Any other DAAL fans about? Anyone know if this show is being aired anywhere, or if it is out on DVD or video (A few years ago, I could only find one video compilation-- a best of Dave Allen at Large).

TripperFan 07-18-2005, 10:37 AM I used to watch it all the time too in the 70s and 80s but haven't seen it aired in years (actually, hadn't even thought of it in years). I don't think it's running anywhere lately - including BBC America.
I'll have to keep my eyes open for DVDs - haven't seen any either.

I only saw the show twice at two different points - in 1975 on WPIX-TV in New York, and in 1980 on WOR-TV (now WWOR-TV); the latter, I.I.N.M., back-to-back with Benny Hill (who impersonated Mr. Allen on his May 30, 1978 special). I think Mr. Allen, in his last years, vetoed any attempts to distribute the show worldwide, doubtless thanks to the controversy surrounding his work (i.e. his skewering of religion). But I do remember it, and I know some people who remember his work fondly.
BrianPGH1972 08-27-2006, 01:37 AM My Mom and I used to watch 'Dave Allen At Large' on WQED-13, out of Pittsburgh, in the early to mid '80s. We LOVED Dave and we've often said how much we'd like to see the series again.
MariposaLKB 08-27-2006, 08:04 AM Wow, I hadn't thought of this show in years either! Used to watch it on the local PBS station when I was in college in the late 70's (oops, dating myself LOL!)--among other fabulous British shows which haven't been on there for a long time. (Thank goodness for BBC America these days, for the most part!) Can't remember it very well, except that he was very funny and had great hair hee hee!
Do I understand you, W. B., to be saying that he is deceased now ("in his last years")? I would imagine he is, but when did he die, how old was he, and what was the cause?

According to his biography on screenonline.org.uk (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/838629/), he died at age 68 in his sleep on March 10, 2005.
