Would you ever be a pen pal with someone who is in prison for life,or even if they do get out in 20 or 30 years?

Nah. I saw a website where they did that once, and most of those guys are looking for you to send them naked pictures so they can jack off.

there's this guy who killed his mom and started a shooting at his school several years ago when he was 16.. i don't remember his name but they interviewed him before he went to jail or whatever, it made me wish i could write to him because i totally understood and related to why he did it.

I don't see why not. The mind of a criminal is usually an interesting one.

I dont know. I might. The only thing I think of when I think about this is that episode of the Golden Girls where Blanche writes to a guy in jail and he gets out and comes to visit her.

I've got a cousin who spent a month or something in prison, and a couple years ago he kept me up all night with all kinds of interesting/crazy crap he had to say.

I had a prison pen pal for over a year, and he turned out to be a great friend.
My mom's boyfriend did over 10 years in prison, and he's one of the most giving people Iv'e ever met in my life. He's like a second father to me. As long as the person knows what he did was wrong, and is sorry for it, I wouldn't have any problem at all being friends with someone who's in prison.

I don't think I would ever want to be penpals with someone is prison. I might want to ask them why they did what they did, but other than that, I wouldn't bother with them.

If any of you fine people from SO end up the joint, I might be.
;)

But generally, unless it is someone I know and it is not a heinous crime (anything violent), I would say no.

No way!!!!!!!!! I would be afraid of them if they commited a series crime and it would be hard to openly talk to them.

I've got a cousin who did time for burglary. Um I've still never talked to him though. It's a long complicated story, but basically his father found my mom's family. His mom only gave him my grandfather's name while she was on her deathbed. Anway I've still never met that cousin. I've met his other brothers though.

I don't see why not. He could have simply made a mistake. He'll need all the friends he can get.

If it gets too creepy, I'll have to end it. But otherwise, I have no doubt he'll end up being a good friend, with a unique perspective on life.

yeah. i can't speak for ALL criminals of course, but generally they're normal people and you don't need to be afraid of them. in my freshman year my life was a mess, i was suicidal and i seriously contemplated bringing a weapon to school and killing some people without caring about the consequences. it's a long story and i was a good person deep inside, but i thought of it as the ultimate way to tell the world how i felt. i decided to hang on a little longer before i threw my life away. i was nice to strangers, i loved shopping at the mall, watching cartoons, being silly on this board, and generally was easy to get along with. no one would ever have expected me to do such a thing, as much as i hinted to people at my school that i wanted them dead, but i was severely depressed and fed up with abuse my whole life and wanted to push back. the guy i mentioned earlier in this thread was living with the same feelings and abuse i was, and that's why i felt connected with him. people like that shouldn't be excused from committing murder but most of them ARE nice people inside, just angry with a lot of problems they dealt with the wrong way, and you shouldn't judge or be intimidated by them.

Sure, why not? Prisoners are people, too. :) Plus, they probably get very bored in prisons and would like someone to talk to.
