Police Say Mother Injected Toddler With Feces

BEAR, Del. -- A former pediatric nurse has been charged with trying to poison her toddler son by injecting human feces into his bloodstream.

Stephanie McMullen, 29, was charged Thursday with assault and reckless endangerment counts and released on bail.

Doctors at the hospital where McMullen worked alerted police that her 22-month-old son had been hospitalized six times since he was four months old for "serious, potentially life-threatening illnesses," acting police chief Lt. Col. Scott McLaren said.

During one examination, doctors found E. coli, a bacteria found in feces, in the boy's bloodstream, and said the only way it could have entered the bloodstream was "through injection, not consumption."

"This could have eventually led to the death of the child," McLaren said.

A search of McMullen's hospital locker turned up needles, a syringe holder and an intravenous line tap, and an examination of her home computer indicated she had been researching child poisoning, according to court records.

McLaren said the woman could have Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in which caregivers cause illnesses in children or exaggerate their symptoms in an effort to draw attention to themselves.

McMullen's attorney, Elwood Eveland Jr., said the child has an eating disorder, and that he has consulted with a medical expert who believes that what the child is suffering is part of a medical condition.

He said police have "absolutely no evidence of an objective nature" against her.

The boy was placed in foster care, and McMullen is scheduled to appear in Family Court next week to try to regain custody.

That's the first thing I thought of. If she does, she needs to be locked away in a mental ward for awhile.

Mental Disorders. Woman needs serious therapy, both pharmaceutical and psychological.

Same here - the moment I read the headline I recognized it as Munchausen's. Man, that's one condition I just can't grasp. If you want attention, do stuff to yourself like a hypocondriac, but to inflict damage to a child is reprehensible.

I think Munchausen is when you hurt yourself for sympathy and attention. Munchausen by proxy is when you hurt someone else to garner sympathy and attention. Either way, it's just so sick.

Actually, yeah, I think you're right - hypondria is just thinking you've got every disease in the book. Munchausen's the infliction.

Oddly enough, the first I ever had heard of it was on St. Elsewhere back in the 80s. The same with Tourette's Syndrome - now I hear of it frequently.

It's sick for sure. The video footage is REALLY disturbing to watch.

I've seen those videos of those sicko mothers in the hospital harming their children on Dateline and those shows.

Hypochondria is what I have. Cancer phobic like you wouldn't believe. Like I always say, "Just waiting for the lump."

Yep - those are the ones I'm thinking of. You want to just run in and start smothering mom instead don't you?

Probably good that you are with Cancer. My mom always was - was positive she'd get it and never did! Also, that makes you want to constantly test yourself and check so believe me, if anything DOES happen, you'll likely catch it early and they're making incredible progress. I tend to get everything checked, but I have had skin cancer and have a little higher risk, other than that, I don't let it rule my life.

Its the ones who turn a simple cold into spinal meningitis that are really annoying! Constant things on the go and have to go on for hours about their aches and pains and how awful it is....yada.....yada.....yada.

Yeah, that goes through my mind too when I hear of these things - or just plain abuse of a child.

You need to be 18 to vote. You need to have a license to drive, You need to have an education (to some degree at least) for most jobs, but ANYBODY can bring a child into the world - and this is what happens sometimes.

Sad.
