I'm kinda surprised The Monkees won Best Comedy Series. The show was great camp, but I wouldn;t think of it as something that the Emmy people would go for. Or were they less pretentious in 1967 than they are today?

The period between the end of The Dick Van Dyke Show to the beginning of Mary Tyler Moore was, IMO, the weakest in TV history.

I'm surprised Seinfeld only won once, but with a season like season 4 (where they won), that's pretty unmatchable.

The weird thing is, when Frasier finally lost, it was the season after Seinfeld left.

I've always thought they should have a ranking, or at least tell us what got "second place."

I know a lot of people are surprised that Desperate Housewives is being viewed in the comedy catagory. But look at the fact that Ally McBeal won Best Comedy six years ago, and even Sex And The City's win four years ago (while it was a half hour show, it was definately more dramedy than sitcom) proves that "comedy" doesn't necessarily mean sitcom. Just like drama doesn't always necessarily mean soap, cop or hospital program.

It would be nice if The West Wing were to win again, this past year was the best season since the last time it won.

I liked Season 4, especially the last few episodes of the season (which is ironic, because I missed the Sam Seaborn character). The Season 4 finale was my favorite episode of the series.

I haven't really seen much of Season 5, but I enjoyed Season 6 quite a bit. Watching the presidential race will be fun. Go Santos/McGarry!!

Ten bucks says its Bartlet. Honestly, unless the "new" version of the series works very well, they should end it this year. Have the series finale be the inauguration of the new president, from the point of view of Bartlet. I liked how this past year there were no pre-emptions.

That shocks me too. But more power to the oddball show winning. Emmy voters seem to just keep voting for the same show over and over again. The more publicity, the more votes. Crock.

As long as Teri Hatcher's character doesn't get any smarter, then it shouldn't be a drama. You compare it with actual dramas like CSI, or L&O, etc., it's definetly NOT a drama.

it starred William Windom as writer James Thurber and the girl who played PhyllisLindstroms daughter on "The Mary Tyler Moore show" and the short-lived (and deservedly so!) spinoff "Phyllis" as his daughter.

Many critics were pissed Seinfeld didn't win it for Season 3 when Murphy Brown won that year. A lot of people thought Murphy only won for that single-mother storyline whereas Seinfeld was creatively better than any sitcom that season.

Exactly. Special Class Series should have their own category. DH, and "Reno" and other shows that just can't be classified.

If I'm not mistaken, back in the mid 1950s, "Father Knows Best" was entered in both drama and comedy categories.

well, it's called "Outstanding Comedy Series", not "Outstanding Situational Comedy".

Ally McBeal won the award six years ago, and I'd say it's about the same classification as Desperate Housewives.

You can be COMEDY and not be a sitcom. It's like saying that in order to be a drama, you must either be a soap, hospital show, or cop drama. The world of comedy is as expansive and diverse as the world of drama. Being considered a comedy isn't necessarily a stigma. If anything, the appeal of shows like Housewives, McBeal and Sex And The City is the fact that you laugh regularly at it, yet the shows aren't played as sitcoms. Like it or not, sitcoms as we know it are dead. Even Arrested Development doesn't exactly fit the standard "sitcom" catagory. The usual ideas of sitcoms have been exhausted and as of now, shows like Housewives, Arrested Development and Entourage are the new face of the comedy genre, even though none of the three shows are conventional sitcoms.

I don't think Sex & The City nor Arrested Development are really sitcoms either. Arrested Development is a full-out comedy, however, so classifying it is simple. That's not to say all single-camera comedies aren't sitcoms, but AD plays out more like a reality show than "I Love Lucy" or "Friends"
