teddybare 07-15-2005, 03:31 AM On AITF the only person who ever drove a car was Archie and he only did it on weekends to make extra driving munsons cab.Did Edith Gloria & Mike not even have a drivers license? Why didnt they have a car to drive instead of walking and riding the subway or taking a bus?

Think about it, Edith had no job so u know she wasn;t going to have a car, Mike and Gloria was still living with Archie and Edith so they couldn;t afford one either. Also I always wonder how Archie was able to maintain that house on that little income-lol
teddybare 07-15-2005, 11:22 AM You make some good points but remember the gambling sickness episode where Edith tells Gloria & Mike about Archie sometimes losing his whole paycheck and losing the car they had in a poker game when they were first married

chipsandsoda 07-16-2005, 01:18 PM Also keep in mind that they live in an area where taking public Transportation instead of driving seems to be more common. It is also probably more expensive to own a Car in New York City than it is in most places.

But from the look of the neighborhood in the opening credits, it didn't look like public transportation was easy for residents to get to. Now far as the Jeffersons, you know they didn't need a car because they lived in Manhattan and was surrounded by cabs, buses, trains, and subways.

I think The Jeffersons did have a car in Manhattan, I don't remember which episode, but I thought it mentioned they had a car.

George stated in an episode of the Jeffersons that they didn't have a car. That's why when the Jeffersons left Queens, they were in a cab
Brieannas21 07-16-2005, 11:07 PM On AITF I don't think that the Bunkers lived that far from a bus stop, it might have been on the end of their street. That's why Archie had to take a bus and the subway to work each morning so did Gloria.
Mikado 07-22-2005, 02:33 AM I remember that losing the car thing....must have been that old LaSalle they mentioned in the theme song ;) ( LaSalle was a smaller, cheaper car made by Cadillac....it didnt carry the Cadillac name, btw )
teddybare 07-22-2005, 03:54 AM Your exactly right about the Lasalle car being a small Cadillac my dad told me that I think it was made around WW2 time

The LaSalle began as a styling exercise in 1927 and was cancelled in favor of a small Cadillac ( The actual car was more or less identical, but the name Cadillac meant more sales ) in 1941. Thus the LaS was built from 1927 to 1940
The LaS was known as GMs Aerodynamic car as you can see VVV
Coffeecup 08-11-2005, 11:05 AM Maybe they didn't have a place to park the car and public transportation was available. .
Brian Damage 08-11-2005, 11:26 AM In a place like Queens, public transportation was readily available.
Pug Lover 08-15-2005, 02:14 PM Gloria did learn to drive when the Stivics had moved to California. But maybe that's partly because public transportation wasn't as accessible in Santa Barbara.Another reason possibly being how Mike was apparently hardly around enough to support her and Joey, leading them to seperate by Christmas time.
