Currently (as I'm typing this), it's 122.8 degrees over there, with the max. (so far) being 124.1. Humidity is 9.1%. It was drier yesterday (4% humidity).

Jesus! I will never complain about our temps here again.

Yeah, me too. It's about 99 degrees here today, but that's a lot better than 124!
Here are some little known facts:

- The world's highest temperature, given as 136.4 degrees at Al 'Aziziyah (el-Aziziyah) was obtained by the National Geographic Society but is not officially recognized by the Libyan Ministry of Communications.
- The maximum temperatures in the sand dunes area in northern Death Valley and at Badwater (elevation -279.8 feet) averages 4 degrees higher than at Furnace Creek Ranch (ele. -178 feet) where the record temp. of 134.6 was recorded.
- According to one report, the thermometer used for the reading on that record high day burst a few minutes later when the temperature went even higher. (It measured only up to 135 degrees.)
- The maximum temp. on the day after the record high was 129.
- A few years ago, the *minimum* (low) temp was 101.
- The water temperature at Saratoga Springs, an area of shallow water in the Southern part of the valley, has ranged from 39 to 111 degrees.
- The average maximum July and August temperatures in Death Valley for the last 60 or so years has been 116.2 (July) and 114 (Aug.). This is 10% higher than the average maximums recorded in the Sahara Desert, including Al 'Alziziyah.

It's not much better at Needles (Calif.)... it's currently 119 there (the record high for that town is 125).

I have been to Death Valley a few times, but of course NEVER in the summer time, when (I beleive the park is closed) and here is the reason why :eek:

The major places like Furnace Creek Ranch and Scotty's Castle are open all year.

Yeah, that's about all I would do. Just sample the temp for about 5 minutes and get out!
Today's final temperature there was 126 max./97 minimum.
I'm really curious to see what happens there tomorrow. The people on the Death Valley board are hoping it gets to 130!

Oh, I'm guessing that the sign would be at the entrance to the park. Which is probably a few hundred feet above sea level. Yes, it's quite possible that it could snow there- out in the open with cold winds blowing (in the winter).

Yes, the low in DV is frequently in the 90s in July. I think I've seen it 100 or more three times in the last 20 years (that would be one reading of 100, one of 101 and one of 102). According to books, it's failed to drop below 110 overnight a few times. We just may see at 100+ minimum temp. this July or August.

It's been around 113-120 here lately. I live in Las Vegas it's always hot - you just get used to it. 113 doesn't feel so bad. In our unheated pool the water temperature is nearing 90 degrees. As I speak it's almost 10pm and it's 98 degrees outside... Isn't the desert wonderful? lol

In case you're wondering, the record high for Las Vegas is 120 and for Phoenix 122.
