View Full Version : The Golden Girls Vs. Yes, Dear...
troopoleon8897 07-13-2005, 12:45 AM Me And A Friend (ONeilJ73) Were Arguing About How He Rated His Favorite Shows On TV.com And He Gave Yes, Dear A Higher Rating Then The Golden Girls. Now He Still Thinks Yes, Dear Is A Better Show Even Though I Explained To him About How The Golden Girls Have Won Countless Emmys And How Yes, Dear Will Never Make It To Even One Seeing As How It Got Cancelled CBS And Only Brought Back Cause They Had Nothing To Put On ... I Was Explaining How The Quality Of The Golden Girls Is So Much Better Than Yes, Dear And That You Should Like Whatever Show You Like Just Know That The Golden Girls Is Better Than Yes, Dear... He Still Thinks Im Wrong....
So Which Show Is Better And Why In Your Own Opinion?
P.S. I Am Not Saying I Dislike Yes, Dear Infact I Watched It Every Wednesday Night This Year.
ONeilJ73 07-13-2005, 12:51 AM Yes dear was a better show. I love watching Yes Dear, I also enjoy watching Golden Girls. I think Yes Dear is a funnier show and I like it more. Golden Girls might have won a couple emmys, so what, lol...yes dear is still better

Give Me A Break!!!
HuntingtonM15 07-13-2005, 12:55 AM I like Yes, Dear, but it can't even compete with Golden Girls.
Stormtracker TF 07-13-2005, 01:06 AM It's all a matter of opinion.
And I also prefer Yes, Dear to the Golden Girls.
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 02:17 AM Golden Girls is a classic. Yes Dear has it's moments but definately not among the best sitcoms tv has to offer. I mean, Rose's St. Olaf stories, Sophia's Sicily tales, Dorothy's timely sarcasm and the ego of Blanche, how can Yes Dear compare? honestly?
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 02:18 AM Mike O'Malley was 100 times funnier on the forgotten WB series "Life With Roger" than he'll ever be on Yes Dear IMO. Anthony Clark was also hilarious on "Ellen", moreso than on YD as well.
USTVFanFromUK 07-13-2005, 08:11 AM The Golden Girls wins hands-down.
Yes, Dear is barf material.
barwars 07-13-2005, 11:31 AM This case is not a matter of opinion.... The Golden Girls is superior in every aspect. Better writing, better acting, and better ratings, in both Neilsens and with critics.
I have seen Yes, Dear maybe 15 or 20 times, and it doesn't even come close to the entertainment value of The Golden Girls. The lead actors in YD are two very funny guys, but the material they're given is terrible, and the wives are neither funny nor all that attractive.
The Golden Girls will go down in history as a classic, while Yes, Dear will be remembered as an embarassment that was allowed to go beyond 100 episodes (Becker, anyone?!)

Exactlly My Point, Yes Dear Is A Small Bush And Will NEVER Grow To The Height Of The Large Oak Tree That Is The Golden Girls.....
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 03:17 PM I honestly don't see the point in comparing the two shows at all.
Something like Designing Women would be a better "vs." choice for Golden Girls (or Sex And The City, or Living Single, or even The Facts Of Life, or maybe even Desperate Housewives, something with four female leads). Something like The King Of Queens would be a better "vs." choice for Yes Dear. The two shows have about as much in common as Lost and Lizzie Maguire have.

I Was Just Trying To Prove A Point To Him That Even Though They Are Completely Different Shows The Golden Girls Wins Hands Down...
This case is not a matter of opinion....
Yes it is.
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 05:18 PM Yes it is.
right. Even tho the majority of people I know prefer The Golden Girls, if someone out there honestly finds Yes Dear funnier than Golden Girls, the persons not wrong, it's just what appeals to them
ONeilJ73 07-13-2005, 05:39 PM it is my opinion and i like Yes dear more than the golden girls. it is probably 100 times funnier. i like both shows i would just rather watch yes dear. i think Troopoleon isnt quite telling it right...i said i think it is funnier and i would rate it higher because i thought we were rating it by how much we liked it and i like it more than the golden girls.
Mr. Television 07-13-2005, 05:43 PM Its all opinion. I like GG better. I've only seen YD a few times and it is amusing. I could say that Dharma And Greg is a better sitcom then Friends. Most would probably dissagree but I like D&G and don't like Friends. Its all about opinions.
barwars 07-13-2005, 05:51 PM People can prefer Yes, Dear all they want. The Golden Girls is the better series, plain and simple.
They're not wrong for prefering it, but it's not the better show.

In your opinion.
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 05:56 PM I think Yes Dear could strongly benefit from better writers. Both of it's leads are funny in their own right, so the casting is not to blame. Plus, the show has had tons of cream of the comedy crop guest-stars, yet the show is still mediocre. I think YD has potential, it just needs new writers and now.
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 05:58 PM In your opinion.
well, it's not always opinion.
For example, I would probably rather watch Yes Dear than Everybody Loves Raymond, however, I do accept the fact that in terms of writing and execution, ELR is the superior series.

Great guest-stars, I'll give YD that. And they're put to good use too. Unlike Will & Grace which has random guest stars that just waste time.
I much prefer W&G, but wouldn't say that it is definitely a better show than YD.
barwars 07-13-2005, 06:03 PM well, it's not always opinion.

My point exactly!
As for another example, little teenyboopers may prefer Lizzie McGuire to I Love Lucy. But there is not one thing about Lizzie McGuire that comes even close to the quality of I Love Lucy.

Most critics would though. I haven't really heard of any critics that have given YD a possitive review. Until the last couple years W&G was considered one of the best sitcoms of the decade.
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 06:06 PM true, the prob with Will And Grace is that it's not that the audience will watch it and go "hey look, that's _____", but instead it's to the point where it's "look we have ____ this week" making sure that fans of J. Lo, Cher, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Demi Moore, etc... are sure to tune in that week. It's stale and been done too many times. The Jack/Cher thing was priceless, then they did it AGAIN with Jack and J. Lo, then yet again with Jack and Janet. It's too much.
well, it's not always opinion.
For example, I would probably rather watch Yes Dear than Everybody Loves Raymond, however, I do accept the fact that in terms of writing and execution, ELR is the superior series.
Then why don't you like ELR more than YD then?
The way I see it, if I think one series is written better, cast better and just plain produced better, I like it more. I wouldn't contradict myself and say something like "Well...I loooooove The Flying Nun waaaaay more than Cheers...but Cheers is better though...."
It would sound like two people talking.
Joker85 07-13-2005, 10:10 PM You know, I was looking at the Message Board and I saw this thread and I was shocked and horrified to find The Golden Girls and Yes Dear in the same thread. I mean, comparing the two shows....there is no comparison. The Golden Girls is better acted, better written, better executed, etc. etc. Of course I guess that is just my personal opinion. But I absolutely agree with what barwars is saying. For example, I have NEVER liked All in the Family. I just never have seen the appeal of the show, nor do I find it that funny. However, I cannot deny that it is very well acted, and very well written, and it certainly had far more impact on TV culture and history than say, The Naked Truth (Tea Leoni sitcom), but I enjoy The Naked Truth more. Hope that makes sense.
HuntingtonM15 07-13-2005, 10:25 PM Ironically, I think the Yes, Dear ep with Betty White is one of the funniest.
Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 10:36 PM Then why don't you like ELR more than YD then?

I don't like either Ray or Brad Garrett. But I admit that the show all in all is superior, Yes Dear is very mediocre and stale, but I'd do find it more entertaining than ELR.
I am that way with music a lot. Like I know Bob Dylan is a better songwriter, but there's "not-as-good" artists I'd listen to over Dylan any day of the week.

yep, that's what I meant. I don't care for AITF either but I give it it's due credit, but I still am not a fan of the show
Jonka 07-14-2005, 12:52 AM Golden Girls was great. Yes, Dear is generic tripe.
I don't really see the point of comparing them.
It's like a poll trying to figure out which is better: an orange or a vaccum cleaner.
Scoobiedoo30 07-14-2005, 01:00 AM I have to say The Golden Girls The Girls are so Funnie
on The Golden Girls
