You know, In a way I do care what people think of me. I would like to think I have been a decent person to everyone I know, and I would hate it if someone thought ill of me.

It depends. Sometimes I couldn't care less what people think, at other times I feel self-conscious and get upset whenever people think badly of me for some reason - especially if I can't see any logical reason why.

I don't mind people at school thinking I'm weird and a freak - most of the people I hang around with think I'm a bit mad. They don't think I'm a freak, I'm just eccentric. Other not so kind people would call me a freak, but I think of that as a compliment.

Then at other times, as I said, I worry about what people think of me and try (perhaps too hard) to make a good impression.

exactly. i don't ever try to fit in and be 'cool', and i like being different but i think i care more than i should sometimes, even though i try not to, unless someone's just trying to piss me off on purpose. and of course in the case of just being polite i do. i do care if people think i'm rude (and have a valid reason why; otherwise i could care less). i'm not going to dye my hair blue and put it in an ugly spikey mohawk for a job interview and tell the interviewer *iTz mAh HaIr & Ah DuN cArE wUt U tHiNk Uv It* if they don't want to hire me unless i change it.

but generally i don't. even though it psychosociologically is tempting to change something about you that someone makes fun of, however i dress, wherever i shop, whomever i like, whatever i believe, however i feel and whatever i do for fun revolves entirely around me and i won't lie about it.

I care to a certain degree what people, at least some people, think of me. I think, honestly, this is true of everyone. I don't think there is a single person out there who doesn't care about at least what one person thinks of them whether it is a parent or a friend. I think we all want to be liked. That is just part of human nature.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on if I'm trying to impress them in anyway. Other times, I don't care what they think of the way I look, how I act, etc. But more often than not, yes, I care.

swedeace
07-12-2005, 10:11 PM
Yes and no.

No, I do not give a damn what strangers think about me. I am totally like rubber. Whatever bounces off of me will bounce back to them. I've learned a lot on being my own free-flowing person when it comes to strangers or people I hold no special attachments with. I never used to be this way, but I have blossomed in this respect. So "yay" for me on this.

Yes, I do give a damn to people I want to impress, care about, or those who I hold special attachments with. These are the people who I hold dear to my heart, whether they feel the same about me or not is another question. It's the aforementioned sentence when sometimes I think I care too damn much about people I have special attachments for. Therefore, it's these times that I tend to obsess about people and friendships where I can hold onto them like a spider holds its pray in a web.

i agree. i think it's important to care a little. if someone is offended by something you do or thinks you're a bad friend (for legitimate reasons), saying "well i don't care what you think about me" would be pretty ignorant. of course trying to fit in and dressing a certain way just be "cool" is different and unhealthy, but everyone goes through that in their early adolescence. conformity and peer pressure are natural.

If it's someone I don't like, being the majority of the world, then no. Not at all.

Yes, I agree, especially when it comes to respecting people to form/maintain friendships. For friendships, this is a PERFECT example where there has to be a balance. I know someone who doesn't have any or very many friends because of personal socializing problems. However, he is quite a tough cookie because his joking is VERY hoarse. One has to have a tough exterior to not take him seriously, so obiviously, he gives the impression he does not care what others think about him when he pushes their buttons on joking seriously. But he doesn't realize this can easily raid people away from his life. Would that make him ignorant? Hmmm... this topic would be quite interesting to bring up to him.

What does everyone think?

It would be a good chance, although from the sounds of him, he's going to figure you're trying to get him to "read between the lines" thing again!

He's definitely putting up walls though. Somewhere along the line he's been put down badly before or really hurt. He's only going to hurt himself going through life like that. (I know exactly who you're talking about). ;)

I used to care more about what people think but some people you just can't please so I don't bother. Like I said Family and Friends I do care what they think but everyday people out on the streets, I don't care at all.

What really annoys me is when people have this "i don't ****in' give a **** what people thinnk about me, and i hate all the ****in' ignorant conformist preps who do" attitude. first of all it's ok to generally not care what people think about you (which is how i am), but if you never consider changing for other people under any circumstances, then i'm sorry but you are naive and will not get very far in life. if everyone thinks you have a bad attitude and the jokes you make are offensive and you absolutely refuse to change it because "you don't care what people think about you", good luck trying to have any friends. good luck trying to get a job if you insist on dressing like a skank and using obsceneties every four seconds and refuse to do otherwise because "you don't care what people think of you". why don't you stop showering and see after three weeks if anyone is willing to be around you, and then say "well i don't care what they think about me" and continue to not shower.

second of all, the whole "i hate conformists" thing is flatout ridiculous. they're not hurting anyone by trying to fit in, and it's a natural stage of life that we all go through and grow out of.

Yeah. Weird thing happened with a friend... yay... I feel more at ease being able to use this word fully and know I am being considered a friend by this same person!!! :D So anyway... I was actually told by this friend that I do not trust him if I am constantly paranoid that I am going to lose his friendship. He wants me to relax a little more. Hmmm... never looked at "trust in friendship defining" like this before. Interesting.... Makes a lot of sense, though.

Thats usually the same way I feel. I try not to care what people think, but if someone doesn't like me and they actually show it, I drive myself crazy trying to figure out why and I probaly shouldn't waste time doing that. (but I do  ) But if I dont like someone, if they dont like me I dont care, but if I like someone, or trying to impress them (which is anotherthing I shouldn't do with people) I get upset if they dont like me.

I try to be the best person that I can be..."golden rule", etc.

But over the years I have come to realize that people are going to trash talk you, no matter what. So, I've stopped striving to gain the approval of others....my approval is all that matters.

Theda Bara
07-09-2021, 09:15 AM
I guess it depends on the person(s).

I think it is human to want to be liked and accepted to some degree but it also depends on the individual.

Do I truly care what some random stranger (who I am never going to see again thinks of me), my honest answer is no!

GentlemanJim
07-09-2021, 12:11 PM
And of course, some people try to INSIST that their approval is somehow necessary. I grew up around 2 separate friends who try to control the relationships they are involved in, by metering out their approval.

When I was young and naive, I just thought they were self indulgent, and tried to coexist as best I could. But, after moving away for 20 years and then coming back, their 'technique' was considerably less transparent. Glad to say that neither is part of my life any longer.

I was born and raised with that mantra "what will people think" and it took years to rid myself of it all. The people who are important in my life, know me. It was Science of Mind that I got heavily into in the 80's told us "it's none of my business what others think of me", it is one of their big principles to help people get thru life more comfortably. So many struggle.

And how about that "golden rule" -- it says a lot.
