Is anybody going to see this movie? I definitely am, especially after seeing the trailer for it. After seeing the first trailer (with the annoying theme music) the new full trailer is much different. I was going to see the movie regardless.

Definately. I've never been disappointed by a Burton-Depp collaboration.

Definitely gonna go see it! The original is great, and so is the book, so I really wanna see this! Plus, Burton is one of the best (If not THE best following Big Fish) directors ever!

Nope. The original made me cry as a kid, and this one looks even more screwed up. In the original, I loved how they portrayed Wonka as a seemingly nice guy, until of course all of those bad things started happening to the kids. I mean if you think about it Wonka was a murderer.

Oh my god, I was scared of the original movie too! Especially the part when they go on the boat..well that just literally freaks me out. So I'm not going to see the new movie. That one looks even freakier. Plus Depp's skin looks like a ghost! :p

Alot of people who attended special screenings of the film have been saying that it seems af if Wonka is a depiction of Michael Jackson this time around.

The way they portray Wonka's childhood is supposedly similar to Michael's.

I liked Tim Burton's version much better than the "original" one. However, I still think Gene Wilder is the better Wonka.

I saw it tonight and I thought the original was better. Going into the movie I though Depp's performance was going to be distracting but it wasn't. But to me, it didn't seem TOO much different from the original which, maybe a good thing or a bad thing. The whole shabang with Wonka's father just didn't work for me. I didn't connect with it. I thought the visual part of the movie was great-obviously better than the original in that respect but the characters were just more fitted in this one. Although I didn't this this verison was bad, I just thought 1971 was better. The only things that didn't work really was the backstory about Wonka's dad and the ending...

theshark8777
07-16-2005, 11:07 AM
It had songs in it, however I was disappointed that the oompa loompa song wasn't in it. I think the songs were all new, except for the Willy Wonka song. So there was singing, but I don't know if I would consider it a "musical"

I agree about the dad subplot. It had potential but it didn't look as if they developed it well.

I still think the new one is better though.

Nope, maybe when it comes out on DVD but I'm not going to spend money to see it in the theater. I don't like this idea of remaking classic movies. There was nothing wrong with the original so I don't understand the need for a remake. Sometimes they should leave well enough alone.

Yeah. The other thing was that it just wasn't emotional for me. Like at the end of 1971's verison I was like 'aww' kind of happy ending. At this one, they twisted it around more than it needed to be and I kinda went "hmm" at the end of this one. I wouldn't of left Charlie alone with Depp's Wonka.

Am I the only one who gets a bit irked when someone calls "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" a remake?

It is NOT a remake of 1971 movie, it's just another adaptation of Roald Dahl's book.

Most of the people who worked on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" have never seen the 1971 "Willy Wonka."

Yes that bothers me too. John August had never even seen Willy Wonka from 1971 when he wrote the screenplay. It also bugged me when people referred to Batman Begins as a prequel, it was a complete restart of the series and not a prequel to any of the previous films.

I'm not really fond of how Depp portrays Wonka from what I see in the previews. He's not supposed to be a dumbass who giggles and runs into walls by accident, I loved Gene Wilder's performance better. I'm glad that they are making a movie more closely related to the book but from the previews I don't think I will like it. I'll still see the movie though, to see how it is.

I mean if you think about it Wonka was a murderer.

Only if you consider that the death of one personality is murder. In the end, Wanka clearly states that all the kids are alive and well, "...When they leave here, they'll be completely restored to their normal, terrible old selves. But maybe they'll be a little bit wiser for the wear."

He mearly tried to teach them a valuable lesson; and I think he succeeded.

Eh, I guess. Roald Dahl is one trippy writer though. I remember reading Matilda, and then later on reading Carrie and seeing the movie. Both of them could move things without touching them. I just thought it was weird.

I agree. The new movie is much closer to the book, but Gene Wilder is the better Wonka. The original movie deviated from the book too much; ironically, Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay.

Two other things I like about the '71 movie: Jack Albertson as Grandpa Joe and Roy Kinnear as Mr. Salt. :)
