View Full Version : Does anyone else here feel extremely paranoid after watching this show?
Goofyman 07-12-2005, 06:12 AM I don't know, maybe it's just me, but everytime I watch Unsolved Mysteries, I have a really hard time not looking back at my mirror and door to make sure someone isn't standing there. Since I'm home-alone most of the day everyday except weekends, I have a terribly hard time using my PC since it is turned away from my door and window.
Is this just an extreme paranoia I have? I constantly think that the murdered people, missing people, or wanted people will appear at my door and kill me.
Argh, the troubles of loving a show that terrifies you to no end. :(
Kemistry 07-12-2005, 10:15 AM I used to get that way when I was younger, I was scared ****less, but it dosen't other me anymore except if I watch some creepy segments late at night in which case I do get a little spooked but you didn't hear that from me.. ;)

I used to be the same way Goofyman! Although, like EOF said, it was worse when I was younger, and it is worse when I watch it late at night! Sometimes it still hits me at random times though! Like when I am walking my dog late at night, I think "in one of these cars that drive by could be a psycho killer who might abduct me." or "someone could just drive by and shoot me, and then my case could be on Unsolved Mysteries!" (This was when Robert Stack was still alive :( , and they had new episodes on Lifetime.) And then with the mirror thing, I watched the Bell case on EOF's site the other day, and later when I was too combing my hair in the mirror, I was afraid someone would come up behind me like Bell did that lady! (And the case happened where I live)
So, yeah, I can totally relate!
But the thing is, I love getting the crap scared out of me!
Goofyman 07-12-2005, 11:12 AM The main issue I have is that I randomly think about how a missing person might just walk in and murder me. Or a wanted person. It's just a late-night paranoia combined with the strain of being tired.

I can relate to walking dogs late at night. Like I've mentioned before, I dont watch this show late at night, because of its effect on me. The route I take my dogs on passes by some pretty big wooded areas and you cant help but think, this is exactly what so and so was doing before they got abducted, etc. :faint: omg:
I've always been slightly paranoid about things anyway, but watching Unsolved Mysteries definitely kicks it up a notch.

Oh I am so with you there!
And Goofyman, I have that same fear. I like to watch Unsolved Mysteries at night, because I love getting a good spook. Anyway, when I walk to the bathroom or come down to get a glass of water, I am always afraid someone will be down there waiting for me!

Like others, it was worse when I was younger.
I remember Lifetime used to air UM really late at night a few years back, and I was terrified after watching the show! I couldn’t fall asleep. The segment that really had me was the one about the crazy man that got picked up in the truck, and then he somehow found the driver’s house and murdered the mother.
I thought some psycho would break into my house and murder me in bed! And I remember hearing weird sounds outside my window that night, too!
Some Advice:
NEVER Watch UM at Night! :)
Gizmo1 07-13-2005, 08:48 PM Yes I have to check the entire house during commericals when I'm alone in the house..I get myself all hyped up!! LoL.

Yup, I learned that the hard way!
Pitooey 07-13-2005, 09:29 PM Don't feel too bad. I have to literally pump myself up to watch this show.
This show spooks me all the time........
The after effects are quite startling.......
I can't sleep........
I think of the characters......

I loved it when they aired it at night a few years back! I'd look forward to going to bed and getting the crap scared out of me! I too wasn't able to sleep after watching, and many times didn't get any sleep at all!
By the way, the story about the crazy man that got picked up in the truck, and then the driver’s house and murdered the mother....freaks me out sooo much!!!
And, I LOVE watching UM late at night! I am actually going to do it tonight! :)
Tuesday Weld 07-13-2005, 09:36 PM When I first started watching "Unsolved Mysteries", Robert Stack's voice and the music creeped me out, to where I couldn't watch it for a while.

The one about the hitchhiker freaks me out too!
You read my mind about watching it at night, I probably will too.

Exactly. I constantly think of the characters with the scariest update music playing. Then I imagine Robert Stack with nazi paraphernalia on, ordering the wanted people to kill me.
Maybe I watch this show too much.
PrettyinPink55 07-13-2005, 10:23 PM Exactly. I constantly think of the characters with the scariest update music playing. Then I imagine Robert Stack with nazi paraphernalia on, ordering the wanted people to kill me.
The update music is so scary! And I've said it before, the sketch and composites creep me out! Also those pictures of criminals! And then when they zoom into the picture! Also, I don't like it when they age the person by computer. That freaks me out too! :o

 :rotflmao:
mphs95 07-14-2005, 02:47 PM I still get creeped out. I rented all the murder DVDs a while back and watched them one Saturday night until past midnight. I am not a wuss, but part of me still gets pretty creeped out when I watch it by myself.

hyechica 07-23-2005, 01:47 PM omg i feel the same way when i was little like 11 or 12 i would freek out if the show was on.. i remeber one day i woke up in the middle of the nite from a bad dream i was about 13 i turned on the tv and unsolved chanell was on and it was on i heard the music got freeked out closed the tv and fell aslep with the covers all over me. im 24 now and when im home alone i get so scared i lock all the doors before i watch it i make sure no one is lurking around.. i live behind woods and it freeks me out that sometimes ill turn on the fan in the summer full blast and close and shut the windows. sometimes i can watch it with no problem and not get scared at all
mphs95 06-21-2008, 09:47 PM To this day, if I watch it at night, I have to check to see that all my windows and doors are locked. I live right in town, so every sound gets me jumping as I am watching it. I still have to watch it with the lights on bc in the dark it flips me out too much.
catlover79 06-21-2008, 09:53 PM Oh yeah.
I've posted this before on this board but after watching UM, I would never go to an ATM at night or pull over during a road rage incident.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 06-22-2008, 04:22 AM I've posted this before on this board but after watching UM, I would never go to an ATM at night or pull over during a road rage incident.
Just commonsense self-preservation. Yes, I get paranoid. It was worst when the show first came on but can still occur.
PunkyP0WER 06-22-2008, 08:17 PM i'm really not a person who should be watching um. i get so paranoid i freak myself out. i often have to take breaks from watching this because my paranoia gets overwhelming. every noise in the house i hear is somebody breaking in. and sundays are the worst. i work as a security guard at this factory and there's no one else there but me and all i keep thinking of is the guard in the platinum factory. the place is so huge and spooky. it was built in the 20's and inside are these huge furnaces and when i pass by them i can see the flames inside and i can't help but shiver and think of david bocks.
the stories that scare me the most are the stories where people disappear without explaination or faceless killers that seem to be a phantom. usually if its a case where a husband kills the wife i'm not so afraid because its an isolated crime. but people like the east area rapist terrify me. i always wonder "what if they moved to my state?"
hottstuff25 07-09-2008, 02:55 PM I haven't posted here in almost four years, but I've been lurking again and the news I received of new episodes. (Does anyone know how to change the username? I've changed a lot since 2004 LOL)
I think it depends on the types of segments you've been watching. It it were some serious Wanted or Missing types, I would get scared ****less, especially at night. Sometimes, the Legend, Miracle, or Alien segments would not leave me scared at all, but have me wanting more information on subject.
I watch episodes now late at night on my laptop, and its a whole new experience and its still scary as hell, sometimes even more because the laptop is right in your face. Recently, I saw Paul Beal (Tyler) and Tammy Leppert and it left me shivering.
mphs95 07-09-2008, 05:55 PM When I watch UM, either on CD's DVD or the occasional rental of the "Bizarre Murders" DVD (I can't bring myself to pay money for the Treasures or other fluff (sorry for those who like those segments. JMO)), I have to triple check to make sure the doors are locked. If I'm at home alone at night watching them, I have the light on and constantly get up to check my windows and doors. I still watch though. This show really scared the crap out of you, better than the s*** out there now.
mphs95 07-09-2008, 05:56 PM I think we finally need to start a support group for people who watch Unsolved Mysteries!
Who needs a support group? We have the board....and each other. Fans of a true classic.
user296686@aol.c 07-10-2008, 07:56 PM Don't feel bad anyone. It's because of this show (and others like it) that I sleep with a big knife under my matress. I know it's crazy, but I'd like to know I had a fighting chance!

Wicked_Mistress 07-12-2008, 04:00 AM What scares us so much is that fact that everything on that show really happened to someone.
It would be one thing if it was just a scary t.v. show that we knew was fake.
But it's not...and THAT'S the scary part...the real world outside the safety of our homes.

That is exactly why I'm so intrigued by this show, and why it is insanely scary at times. The "reality" part is definitely what gets me going. Random scary TV shows and movies just didn't affect me anymore once I really got deeper into UM. Everything else was almost a joke, and it baffled me how people were so easily petrified by media that was not even realistically scary.
Dr Will Hatch 08-21-2008, 09:54 AM It's gret that I'm not the only one. I've randomly taped segments of Unsolved Mysteries throughout the years, ones that always scared the hell out of me. I always watched it at night and got freaked out, becoming very paranoid. I love it!
Mastermind 08-21-2008, 10:12 AM The thing that scares me a lot on this show is when they disguise a persons voice.
I remember one that made the guy sound like he was a friggin alien.
That would make already creepy episodes even creepier.
The voice disguising of that guy in Stanley Gryziecs case was creepy too.
Missing persons cases also scare me the most. Almost like the people vanished out of midair.
Too this day i will freak out if i watch the MOTHMAN segment at night!
MegtheEgg86 08-21-2008, 10:25 AM The thing that scares me a lot on this show is when they disguise a persons voice.
That's the entire reason I have to really, really think about whether or not I want to watch the Hansen twins segment, as Donnie Hansen's voice is disguised. That would be scary enough as it is due to how much he actually speaks in the segment, but just knowing that he's more than likely the one who did it.......:(
Remember VH1's Behind the Music? The one about the Notorious B.I.G. and the Tupac/Biggie murders? I still have to change the channel when they show that composite sketch (it looks like an alien) or when that witness starts talking. That's the freakiest voice distortion I've ever heard.
When "Unexplained Death" or "Missing Person" comes up on the screen and it's after 9:00 PM, I can pretty much kiss my goodnight's sleep goodbye.
ms_bates 01-14-2009, 04:12 AM Yes! I can freak myself out watching this show even in the middle of the day!
The music alone unnerves me, and don't get me started on how creepy it is when Robert Stack is walking along some lonely country road or standing in the woods to narrate one of the segments. In the back of my mind, I am always waiting for some freaky or horrible sh*t to go down behind him!
LI_UM_Fan 01-14-2009, 09:52 AM For me this is part of the appeal of Unsolved Mysteries, especially the old version with Stack. Horror films just don't get me frightened anymore, but Unsolved Mysteries do. I've read that its healthy to deal with fright this way, so I allowed myself to enjoy the ride.
However lately I have been watching the shows really late at night, in bed, and I have been waking up from weird noises I "hear". I think that I will have to start getting some comedy in right before I shut my eyes!
UMFan972 01-14-2009, 09:54 PM absolutely. i always tell people who have more of a carefree attitude about life that its all fun and games until they're profiling you on forensic files. and i say that because watching UM for all these years has taught me that you have to be careful in life.
buffy2327 01-15-2009, 12:46 AM It still gives me the creeps every time I watch an episodes and the music don't help but I luv every minute of it! LoL
cmyweb 01-15-2009, 09:33 PM The old format with Robert Stack would definitely freak me out...his voice and the spooky music. Eek! I'd get shivers watching it. The new versions don't have the same effect though...they feel more like a newscast to me. Probably I'm just getting old ;)
browneyes106 01-16-2009, 03:30 PM I used to get parnoid after the alien abduction and ghost segments.
iliekcheezomg 01-17-2009, 02:51 AM The Kathy Hobbs segment always stuck with me and freaked me out. I think I was about nine when I first saw it. I don't drive so I have to walk to any place that isn't on the bus line, and that case nearly always comes to mind when I'm out walking, especially after dark.
Of course, for a couple of years there, I felt a little safer when I had a bicycle and rode it everywhere, but then some jerk stole my bike and wrecked it. :(
LittleBeast69 04-20-2014, 11:33 AM I don't know, maybe it's just me, but everytime I watch Unsolved Mysteries, I have a really hard time not looking back at my mirror and door to make sure someone isn't standing there. Argh, the troubles of loving a show that terrifies you to no end. :(
Trust me, it's definitely NOT just you that feels that way. There are quite a few segments on UM that have me seriously paranoid to glance over my shoulder after watching.
LittleBeast69 04-20-2014, 11:41 AM Don't feel bad anyone. It's because of this show (and others like it) that I sleep with a big knife under my matress. I know it's crazy, but I'd like to know I had a fighting chance!
Pam
Considering the scenarios that've unfolded on UM, that's not the least bit crazy. In fact, it's a very good idea and precisely why I keep a baseball bat under mine.
elg0rd0 04-20-2014, 03:20 PM I remember watching the show after The Night Stalker was plastered all over the news. Living in SoCal you didn't have a 30 minute break of the press, afternoon news segments, night news segments, prime time specials, and the composite of Richard Ramirez used to just freak me out. I think the show kind of conditioned me not to be as paranoid for awhile, but when the reruns would air on Lifetime at 1 in the morning and that music hit after watching some commercials about knitting or what have you, it was like a person tapping you on the shoulder and you looking over and no one was there. It's why I didn't sleep that much as a young adult.
TheEZ 04-20-2014, 05:30 PM I do too! I can handle it during the day but if I'm watching at night, I have to sit in a corner so I can see the entire living room and both entrances. I can't read the board or any other website or book about mysterious disappearances either. I'm super wussy. And for no good reason. I have lived in the same house my entire life and nothing UM-worthy has happened in this neighborhood in those 30 years. But I can not keep from getting flipped out.
