At the beginning of the sixth season's "TOThat Could've Been" episode, Joey asks that. Yet another goof! We all know that Joey (and the others) learned that in the pilot eppie.

Except it was Joey who said that.
Joey forgets a lot of things, and otherwise ignores certain things.

Not surprising he didn't remember. I find it hard to believe the producers made a goof that stems from the pilot.

I'm confused if it was in the one that could have been didn't the pilot never take place because Rachel didn't walk out on the wedding.

Exactly. It's not a good at all because Rachel didn't enter their lives and Joey would have had no idea who Barry or Mindy were.

That quote from Joey occurred during the teaser of "The One That Could Have Been," when the episode was still set in 'our' reality. From the rest of the episode on, it was set in the 'what if' reality.

Either way, it's not a goof. If Ross or Monica had asked this, you'd have a point. But it came from Joey, who is neither the sharpest nor most observant character. Once Rachel reminded him of who they were, Joey immediately remembered, so he obviously hadn't forgotten altogether. Rachel hadn't mentioned Barry and Mindy in four years anyway.
