I voted, but I hope the poll is private. If I'm wrong, I'll deny it.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I also figured that because you had lectured us on the word "whom" in the past, that it would automatically be the sentence with "whom" in it. ktxhdbi

only if the people who voted for that thought that by formal i meant proper/mature or whatever that would count as being right. but if they thought it meant "previously", the correct word is formerly. for years i have been annoyed by seeing people say "i am formally known as blah blah" all the time when it should be formerly. i saw someone do it again today, and i just had to get it out of my system, that's why i made this thread.

but it's not the 'correct' one i have in mind. :grr:

Because I'm right and you're wrong, I'm big and you're little and there's nothing you can do about it[/matilda]

That wouldn't make sense would it? Formally already means his name used to be John and it's already something else. So it would be I am formally known as John. Well according to my theory.:p

I thought it should be "I was formerly known as John." I picked "You're better than I" because it wouldnt be "You're better than me" because you would say, "I am better than you" not "Me am better than you."

That's how I read the sentence. John would be his formal name.
