Editorial Reviews
Album Description
We at 'Collectors’ Choice Music' are known (we hope!) for our tasteful reissues of artists both legendary and neglected, but once in a while we like to throw our customers a curveball (or, more appropriately in this instance, a screwball) just for the fun of it. And this one’s a whole lot of fun—here is Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams’ 1976 album for Atlantic, made when their 'Happy Days' spinoff sitcom 'Laverne and Shirley' was at the top of the Nielsen charts and giving Milwaukee a boost of civic pride it hasn’t had since! Here’s a few fun facts about this album—though it consists mostly of oldies, Michael McKean a.k.a. Lenny chips in with a song ('Five Years On') and serves as musical coordinator. The band, meanwhile, is incredible, with Hal Blaine on drums, Plas Johnson on tenor sax and Jimmie Haskell (who arranged Elvis) arranging. Melissa Manchester helps out the vocally-challenged duo—and, hey, that’s Kenny Loggins on tambourine! You know these sessions! must have been a gas, and the album is, too, so grab your Boo-Boo Kitty, mix up a couple of Pepsi and milk cocktails, and rock to 'Da Doo Ron Ron; Five Years On; Easier Said Than Done; All I Have to Do Is Dream; I Know; Chapel of Love; Sixteen Reasons; Gonna Get Along Without You Now; Graduation Day; More from Our Yearbook; Oh Gee', and 'I’m Walkin’'. A 'Collectors’ Choice Music' exclusive, with new notes drawn from an interview with producer Pete Bennett!

I'd pay $16 for it, but I only had to pay $12 on Ebay. ;)

It's a fun album from a memorbilia point of view, but definitely not Grammy material. Basically PM & CW sing some 50's era classics (and one original MMK song) that rely heaviliy on enhanced musicians and background singers. Two of the notable background singers are Melissa Manchester and Kenny Loggins. It's not bad, but it's not very good either. It's fascinating to me that the lengths that the studio promotion department went to building an album around to "characters" (they sing as L&S, not as PM & CW) that really can't sing. In a few songs they have PM"s mike practically turned off.

All in all though, I'm glad that I have it to add to my L&S collection.

Thanks for the response!

so.... its worth is in its nostalgic value as memorabilia rather than any particular musical or entertainment value?

hmmmm, maybe I'll keep looking for Lenny & the Squigtones :D

My friend made me a cassette tape of "Laverne & Shirley Sing" - I love it! She also got various other versions of the LAS song :) She told me a while back that she's record "Lenny & the Sqigtones" for me but I'll have to get back to her on that.

When LAS Sings was originally re-released by critic's choice music (http://ccmusic.com), I spoke with a representative about Squiggtones album being re-released, and they said it was a possibility if the LAS Sings Album did well.

I don't know if it did or not, but it's out of print on their website.

I bought the CD from a mail-order catalog a while back. I don't remember the
price, but it's a pretty good album (I thought). They can carry a tune as good
(or better) than some other actors who have recorded albums.

I have a copy - unopened - but listened to it back when I was working on the show. Penny and Cindy did not have great voices but when the show was a hit they sold everything. It's a fun album to have but if you hope to be saying, "Wow, those two can sure sing!", it ain't gonna happen.

i first bought this on ebay....$6 bucks. then bought a 2nd, and friends bought me a 3rd and 4th...and i was like, ok...stop! i eventually bought it on ebay as a cd. IT IS PURE NOSTALGIA, and part revenge, as my mother forbid us to by things COD back in the 70s...well, i showed her - several times over, lol. NO, they can't sing, but it is worth the pure CAMP fun! Besides, I have my album framed and hanging in my bathroom - a kitchy decor!
