View Full Version : The Show Got Better When Shirley Left.

I thought that the show was better when Shirley departed from the cast. I found that the scripts were written alot better, and that Laverne had changed into a less-slapstick comedy kind of girl, and into a more serious, but better character. I loved Rhonda, and also thought that it got even better when Lenny left. "The Playboy Show" was such a funny episode I thought. I thought that the show also got better when they moved to California, mainly because there was never enough action going on back home in Milwaukee. I think that they should have continued the series, even though the ratings slipped into the 30's, 40's, and 50's, for it's last season, which in fact came out at #47 I think. I really wished that they kept it...for some reason a Garry Marshall show gets better when somebody leaves, like when Richie left Happy Days, and Fonzie had a much better part. Anyway, back to the point. I liked it better when Shirley left.

I have to totally disagree with this. Maybe the plots were less total slapstick but that was a huge part of the show. Once Shirley left you have a huge unreplacable gap in the ensemble cast. When Lenny left, both the "dynamic duos" had been split up leaving a cast of bits and pieces. Laverne, Squiggy, Lavernes father, Lavernes ex-roommates ex-boyfriend, the actress next door, and thats about it.
I guess I can see your point of how the shows got more serious, but Laverne and SHirley was never a "serious show" to begin with and thats the way it should have stayed to the final episode.

I agree with Titania! Laverne and Shirley had chemistry and so did Lenny and Squiggy! As for Rhonda, she never really was nice to the girls! She was the superior being and L&S were dirt! Argh!

They should have married Carmine and Shirley right when she found out she was pregnant! Then they could have worked her pregnancy into the show! A few eppies after Shirley left were okay, but the rest of them were stupid! I hated the fact that Laverne and Shirley got fired from Bardwell's! I liked that wrapping job they did!

That's what i think!!

GARRY MARSHALL AND PENNY MARSHALL AND CINDY WILLIAMS ARE ALL GENIUS'!!!!!!

I have to disagree, too. That last season, with the exception of a few OK episodes, is really horrible! Burn those eighth season episodes! Or all the Hollywood episodes while you're at it (except the one where they break into Bardwell's).

The only non-shirley eps I can tolerate are "Hows Your Sister" and that one where lenny, squiggy, frank, and carmine are in the desert. Otherwise- BURN THEM!

I prefer Shirley in "Laverne & Shirley". It wasn't the same when Shirley left. Its kind of like Lucy Carmichael without Vivian Bagley.
