View Full Version : initiating a trade question
stoogedog 06-27-2005, 12:50 PM hi, there are alot of newbies on the boards. so i thought i would get a clarifiaction on the trade initiation question. when do most traders consider the trade initiated. is it in the request that is posted with a want, ie i am looking for a certain series or episode? or is it initiated with the reply to a want post, ie i have the certain episode or series you are looking for? lets have some input. thanks

I would have to say that if Trader A posted that he was looking for a particular show, and Trader B emailed A stating that he had it, then A would have to send first. Conversely, if Trader A posted his list without stating he was looking for any shows in particular, and Trader B emailed A stating he was interested in a show on A's list, then B would be obligated to send first. That's the most logical way to do it.
loren 06-27-2005, 03:39 PM ill make this real easy
if we know each other, ship at the same time--or asap
if one person is established and the other is unknown, then the unkown person sends first, until they get known
this way theres no funny business
and this is my opinion---and the way i do things
peewee 07-11-2005, 12:08 PM to answer most of the questions about Starting trades,I DO AGREE about, starting a trade with someone you should send first....BUT,AND I ,MEAN seriously when i have sent 3 trades first AND then NOT getting anything in return, puts a bitter taste in my mouth. The first trade was no problem, but since then everybody has promised the world but has not come thru.......I had someone send me a private message about charging me for DVD'S of the series GLORIA.....and i told him i would pay thru paypal.Never recieved anything....SO i believe if someone wants to trade the person contacting me is INITIATING the trade,BECAUSE HE or SHE must want something of yours before trading.....Then when they get what they want your still waiting for your
episodes..

I consider a trade "initiated" when someone starts the emailing process. Whoever sends an email first has just initiated the trade.
Just posting on a board "I've got what you're looking for" isn't enough. Until they take a chance to send an email, nothing has been started.
When dealing with a well known trader, it's not unusual for the trading veteran to expect you to send first whether they initiated the trade or not. However, often newbies don't recognize a well known trader's name nor do they understand this accepted practice among traders.
When I first started trading, I had several well known traders expect me to send first though I hadn't initiated the trades. I assumed we were sending "at the same time" at LEAST, thinking we were both taking a chance (right?). I didn't realize that they were making me wait until after they told me that they'd "checked my tapes" and would sent within a week or so (or whatever). (Turned me off!)
This can cause frustration in a newbie, so I think that it's best to not do this as a surprise. Tell your trader that you will expect them to send first. Saves a whole lot of headache later on.
IMHO :D

The rules are supposed tto be different on the Sports Trading Board I'm apart of because in order to be a member of the trading community, you need a reference in order to start trading. So i'm still expected to send at the same time as someone who just joined the community a week ago. But i still do things my way and don;t send anything until the newbie send first.
