View Full Version : Don't (Mess) With My Heart - Censorship hits a new low!!!
Dean Winchester 06-27-2005, 12:10 PM I heard Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart" on the radio yesterday, and they have changed the word "Phunk" to "Mess". WTF?!?!?!
I know that radio has been really getting prudish lately, but what is so offensive about the word "Phunk"? I guess basically this means songs like "Give Up The Funk" by Parliament and "Funky Stuff (and More Funky Stuff)" by Kool And The Gang are also considered too risque too. "Funkytown" for crying out loud is "dirty"?
Censors need to pull their ears and noses out of their butts, the world has gotten too prudish in responce to the Justin/Janet incident over a year ago that even a song like Don't Phunk With My Heart is being censored.
Superstar 06-27-2005, 12:19 PM I'm pretty sure its because it sounds like the word f*ck and people could mistake phunk for f*ck
TripperFan 06-27-2005, 12:19 PM Could be its one of those songs (can't say I've heard it) that the word could be mistaken for another (the four letter F word). That's all I can see, but it's still crazy. I don't get why they do that at all.
I remember when Rod Stewart released "Tonight's The Night" and they were trying to get it banned from radio because of the line, "spread your wings and let me come inside". All it does is draw MORE attention to the song or line which defeats the censorship purpose.

well, why is it suddenly a big deal now? there were a LOT of songs out in the 70's and even some in the 80's that had the word "funk" or "funky" in the time and radio wasn't too afraid to play those with their original words, yet suddenly a song with the word comes out in a real censor-friendly era and they have to mend it.
Thank god words like "Sit" never caught on in songs, who knows what radio would do if a song was called "Don't Sit On My Lap", lol

 (about the Don't Sit on My Lap reference)
Yeah, sometimes when I hear The Who's "Who Are You" on the radio, near the end of the song, Roger sings "Who the f*ck are you" and I've never heard them bleep that out.
Sometimes I hear Extreme's "Get the Funk Out" and I've never heard anything bleeped when played on the radio.
Something funny I heard on a radio station in Boston--somebody requested "Spreading the Disease" by Queensryche and there's a lyric that goes '25 bucks a f***', a John's a happy man. When dealing with lyrics like that, the radio station 'Homerizes' it, so it goes '25 bucks a D'oh'. Yeah, it's censorship but I thought it was funny the way they did that.
ABlairican Pie 06-27-2005, 10:41 PM Why don't they *mess* with the title to "Get the Funk Out" by Extreme?

So now the hit by The James Gang will now be called "Mess #49", or just "#49."
ABlairican Pie 06-29-2005, 12:44 AM This used to be a Saturday morning cartoon in the 70's. What will happen to it now??
barwars 06-29-2005, 08:54 AM hahahaha, I heard this on the radio and almost died laughing that they would go as far as censoring "phunk"
It's an alright song, I really like Black Eyed Peas, but it's not their best.... and the video is crazy as hell.
MrWarmth 06-29-2005, 09:05 AM :( Does this mean the song,"Funky Funky Broadway" will have to be changed to "Messy Messy Broadway" ?

it's probably the only currently popular hip hop song I can stand. I'd much rather listen to Black Eyed Peas than 50 Cent or the like.

True, it is a lot better then 50 cent, but I'd much rather just listen too the old stuff. It's so much better, music today makes me sick.

Wow!!! Cool old pictures!!!
I hated that Simpsons episode where Bart and Lisa ragged on Homer for listening to classic rock in his car and raving about the accomplishments of Grand Funk, and saying "Everyone knows that 1974 was the greatest year in the history of rock and roll!" Because it was, you know. :D Bart and Lisa criticized Homer for "being out of touch with the times", when they were raving about Lollapalooza and the trendy whiner alternative music (except it was called Hullabalooza). But Peter Frampton was on the bill!

RustyShackleford 07-05-2005, 05:22 PM Speaking of censorship, in some classic rock songs you hear plain as day a cuss word, like for example in Money by Pink Floyd the lyric "Don’t give me that do goody good bullsh*t" and bullsh*t isnt censored is there a reason why its not censored, everytime I hear that song I wonder
