I've been meaning to post this for months.
As you can see from my new avatar, sculptor De L'Esprie has made a larger than life clay image of Dick Van Dyke which will be put on display in the lobby of the new Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles. Dick Van Dyke is a long time supporter of the mission and chairman of its capital committee.
I don't know if the statue has been installed yet. The article I scanned the sculpture-in-progress from was the September 3, 2004 edition of Conejo Valley Life magazine.
The mission is moving (or has moved) to Sixth and San Pedro Streets if you're in the area and want to see it in person.

Thanks for the info, Judge Garth. I'm coming out to So. Cal. in August. If I get a chance, I'll try to stop by and see it!

Hey Lolac, I'm glad you're gonna be visiting out our way! Is it for a vacation?

Hank18 & Lolac,
If I'm released by my doctor to travel, I'm also going to be in L.A. in August! I'm visiting with a group of fellow tropical gardeners August, 17th - 22nd.
I sure hope I can go. It would be nice to see the Pacific Ocean again.

Steve, how are you feeling? My guess is that you are not coming to CA next week, huh? It's been too soon since your surgery. We are here until the 20th. My kids want to go see Graumman's Chinese Theater and see where Lucy and Ethel tried to steal John Wayne's footprints! I'd kinda like to go see this Dick Van Dyke statue as well. I hope your recuperation is going well!

Lolac,
Unfortunately, you're right. I'm not feeling well enough to travel at the moment. One of my buddies calls me everyday to see if I'm getting better. I am, but very gradually. He really wants me to make the trip, and so do I. But I haven't even had my first post-surgery follow up visit with my cardilogist, I'm still limping on the leg they took the artery from, the incision sites are all still quite tender, and well, you know the deal.
I'm supposed to be in Laguna Beach a week from tomorrow, on Aug 17, and I was going to see if I could possibly catch up with you for a few minutes! It would be great to meet you in person, but it doesn't look doable at this time :( .
On the other hand Lolac, you're on a good, long vacation, and that's great! I take a month off every year myself to travel, so I know you're enjoying it. I'm so glad you and the family are having a nice time! Let us know if you bump into any movie stars :) !

Steve, I'm glad to know you are getting better each day. One day at a time. I was hoping we could meet, too! I'd like my family to meet a fellow TDVDS fan! So maybe we'll have to do it next August when we come to Chicago! My husband will be attending the NACo conference out there next summer and we are talking about working our family vacation around that conference. I've never been to Chicago and I really want to go. So get better and maybe next year!

Lolac,
That sounds great! I guess I won't miss my chance to meet you and your family after all. I'm sure you'll love Chicago. I just got an email from a friend who visited recently, saying how much he likes it here. Many first-time visitors are surprised at how beautiful the city is and how much there is to do.
I'll give you more info on that later in a PM. In the meantime, strike a pose with Dick's statue, and enjoy L.A.!
