View Full Version : Question Senior Members

I am confused as to how one becomes a senior member. I just read a post in which a "new guy" has senior member under his name. This guy was slammed by several members of this group ( I will not comment on whether justified or not) however his rebuttal stated an apology and that he is new here.

Again I am new here (but a very experienced trader), this seems wrong to me that someone can only have a couple trades under his belt and be designated a "Senior Member". This could be very misleading to someone coming into this forum and think that Senior Member indicates good trader. Is there any way to indicate a User rating (i.e. ebay star system) or is that too time consuming for the moderators?

For me I do a little digging if someone wants to do a big trade and its not hard to find good traders (Agent 13,Ku7uk,....) no slights intended by omissions of names this is just examples. I think unexperienced traders could get the wrong impression on "senior members" (I know I did).

Just a "things that make you go hmmm" thing for me, there must be a way to add/subtract ratings to members

My 2 cents

Jay,

Becoming a "senior member" seems to happen automatically, after a week or so (not sure of the time frame but it does seem that it's awfully quick). I think it's better to look at the date the person joined up. That tells me more than the number of posts because some people really rack up the points quickly simply because they're chatty.

The point system has been considered, but TJ is hesitant about starting such a thing. I suppose it is possible for someone to initiate such a thing and get TJ's approval, but I'm not a creative sort of person so couldn't come up with an attractive enough plan that TJ would go along with.

Actually, TJ was hesitant about even allowing the "good trader posts only" sticky post (with "bad traders" linked through that post rather than completely exposed).

I think the point system, similar to CPS, would be a wonderful system to implement. Try checking with TJ and combsisthebest. Maybe enough time has lapsed where TJ will feel more comfortable with such a system. I think it's an excellent idea.

Case in point: the now defunct Cartoon Preservation Society.
The Cartoon Preservation Society is up and running, though James did try to start another group. The new (and improved) group can only be joined by an invitation.
Jen remarks "I think it's better to look at the date the person joined up." But this too is useless. It tells you nothing of value.
Not totally useless. Every little bit helps. It all adds up.

The Cartoon Society sounds right up my alley, how exactly does one get an invitation?

A Senior Member is somebody who has made 10 or more posts.

As far as the points system goes, that was combisthebest idea. If he is willing to spend the time and effort to maintain it, I have no problem with it. My involvement will be very limited. I will check ip's as necessary, but I am not going to devote a lot of time to it. I'm not an active trader at all.

This board was first started for people who may not be the big time collectors and traders. It was just for people who may have been looking for a single episode.

I think the good traders/bad traders list is all that is really necessary. This board has been around awhile, and sure there have been problems.. but there is no perfect system.

Again I wish to state that I was only asking how things worked around here. I found the senior Member tag confusing. I certainly did not expect the snowstorm of activity that came out of all of this. I am sure 1/2 the people agree with my point and the opther 1/2 want to kill me (much like my home life..lol)

I like this forum and find it far more usable than the Yahoo forums that I was on before. Whatever is decided is fine by me looks like I should keep my "things that make you go hmm" to myself for awhile

Jay,

On the contrary. I'm glad you brought this up since it's been something I have wanted to implement for a long time but being an uncreative person I didn't know to start it. It was interesting to hash it all out. :) I now realize that a point system will not work here.
