This morning, my father suffered a heart attack, I'm not sure if it was a small one, or severe, or fatal. We are still waiting for results. I just wanted to let you guys know, that I will not be here for a good while. I might pop in every now and then. So please, pray for my family, and don't forget about The Munsters!

Well, they tested my father about 25 different ways, and the doc's say he has hypertension, and also diabetes (we already knew about the diabetes). They said he did not suffer a heart attack, but he is staying overnight at the hospital.

He had severe chest pains, but did not have the actual attack. He's still in the hospital now, recieving treatment.

So glad to hear that Munsters#1. I lost my dad to a massive heart attack and your post brought back so many of the memories and fears. I'm glad it wasn't the same in your case!! Hopefully he'll heed the warning and watch his b/p and diabetes better. ;)

800?!? I don't think bp (blood pressure) can go that high! Back in 1991, my dad had a stroke- his blood pressure was 190/110. Luckily, the stroke did not cause a disability and he was up and around pretty quick.

Regarding your father... was atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries due to plaque build up) mentioned? An angioplasty would help in that case. Or was arteriosclerosis (abnormal thickening and hardening of the arterial walls resulting in the loss of elasticity) mentioned?
Did his doctor mention was caused the angina?
My mom has had an angioplasty done (4 different ones, actually) due to atherosclerosis and she does have arteriosclerosis for which she takes blood thinning meds, and I also give her the herb ginko biloba, as well as extra vitamin B-1.

Being curious about almost everything, I have read up on health and medicine and have read much about anatomy and disorders of the heart and brain (and teeth, from personal experience).
Going by what you described, I'm sure your father is on medication to keep the blood pressure lower; maybe meds to prevent or stop angina episodes (probably nitroglycerin).

You're right on the money there Fleet (I too, have a particular interest in different medical conditions).

My 84 yr old aunt was just in hospital for an angioplasty a couple of weeks ago. They were going to do the anigioplasty and stent, but when they got in there, it turned out there was enough of a compensation, that they felt they could just treat it with meds. She was having chest pains and shortness of breath, but once they got the meds going she's feeling much better.

You guys might also want to check out the thread "Into Each Life" on the Dick Van Dyke board. It was posted by SawgrassSteve, a great member who's only 44 and is having to face bypass surgery very soon. Hardening of the arterties is common in African-Americans and his posts are quite interesting. We might also want to wish him well - he seems to be a great guy.

That's true, sometimes they think a patient needs an angioplasty, then when they actually get in there, they find it's not necessary. Stents were used on 3 of 4 arteries on my mom.

Yeah, needing a bypass at 44 is very rare. From what I've read, if possible, choose an angioplasty instead of bypass. The former is much less involved and easier for the patient.
My mom had the choice of either for the 3 arteries which needed it. One of my brothers and an Aunt thought she should have the bypass. I convinced them toward angioplasty.

Yeah, I think blood vessels would burst with an 800 reading! However, I've heard of people who have cholesterol readings at 600 or 700. (Desired is 200 and lower.)

He will probably have his blood sugar checked regularly.

Glad to hear he's doing better. Once he gets used to the diabetic diet, it really isn't so bad. I've had some recipes from it (and I'm the biggest sugar and fat addict going) and they've been delicious. Just a drag at first in the lifestyle change I guess.

Don't worry. I'm gonna make sure Mom and Me keep a close watch on him and watch what he eats. ;)

Well, I am proud to announce that my father returned home today. He lost a bit of weight. All he wanted to do was take a shower and sleep.

I sure as hell am glad he's home! :D

Great news!! Glad to hear he is home and over this crisis. Take good care of him, nothing like that special relationship between a boy and his Dad!

Thank you all for all of the nice things you said, prayers, and best wishes. I've never been a religious man myself, but boy have I been prayin'! :lol:

With him home now, it feels like a tremendous weight has been lifted off my shoulders. He's been trying to eat healthy, lately. We went shopping and he started picking out celerly and carrots and potatos. He used to love drinking diet soda, now it's just water. And also he's allowed to drink skim-milk. Which I don't think is that good, but it's healthy for ya.

I was just speaking with my cousin, she said that medically speaking, he did have a small heart attack.

I also surprised that he does not want to rest and relax. He has been on the go, shopping and picking up mail. I guess that's his form of excersise. :lol:

I guess I missed all the excitement. I'm really glad the outcome was good. Please relay best wishes to your Father. (I lost mine in '79.)

Glad your dad's okay and my thoughts go out to you. My father had an angioplasty 3 months ago with 5 stens. He's doing well though... the wonders of medical science! Anyway you look after him and remember prevention is better than cure so eat healthy and go walking!
