View Full Version : Why did the producers make the Cindy character so DUMB? TVFactFan 06-20-2005, 03:34 PM she was kind of wide eyed and a little slow-lol She was nothing like the rest of the kids. Never understood why she was like that TripperFan 06-20-2005, 03:36 PM I just found her extremely annoying - still do from an adult point of view!! I'd take 10 Jans over 1 Cindy anytime. TVFactFan 06-20-2005, 03:48 PM I just found her extremely annoying - still do from an adult point of view!! I'd take 10 Jans over 1 Cindy anytime. Susan Olsen did not grow up to be a pretty women-lol She has some physical issues seventies_sitcoms 06-20-2005, 04:03 PM There was an old ugly rumor that Susan Olsen grew up and starred in a few X-rated films. It wasn't her of course, but the actress who was supposed to be Susan sure looked like her when she grew up. I can't remember the name. Doesn't she make shoes now or something? I thought she had a band for awhile. dlemond 06-20-2005, 04:11 PM Wow, chill out. Susan Olsen looks fine. I don't mean fiiiiine, I mean she looks ok. They made Cindy naive, not stupid. Come on, this was a family show, you think they had the family idiot? TVFactFan 06-20-2005, 08:53 PM Wow, chill out. Susan Olsen looks fine. I don't mean fiiiiine, I mean she looks ok. They made Cindy naive, not stupid. Come on, this was a family show, you think they had the family idiot? LOL Vegas Girl 06-21-2005, 08:18 PM She wasn't stupid, just an innocent little girl from that era....unlike some of the smart-mouthed brats from today's society. gidgetgrape 06-21-2005, 08:38 PM I never thought of her as being stupid. I LOVE FACTS OF LIFE 06-22-2005, 07:36 PM A little empty headed buts that cuz she was a little girl in the 70's I'm sure those who grew up in the 70's acted just like her when they were her age TripperFan 06-22-2005, 07:44 PM A little empty headed buts that cuz she was a little girl in the 70's I'm sure those who grew up in the 70's acted just like her when they were her age Thanks a lot - what the hell is that supposed to mean???!!! I was a little older, but don't for a minute think all little girls who grew up in the 70s acted like Cindy. That's insulting! Why would they be "empty headed"? I'll bet I was a helluva lot more street wise than you at the same age. PrettyinPink55 06-22-2005, 07:51 PM Cindy was the youngest Brady child. I never thought of her as dumb or empty-headed. I LOVE FACTS OF LIFE 06-23-2005, 11:03 AM Well sorry didn't know anyone would get that worked up and what you said about more streetwise then me thats insulting so I woulden't be talking Tripperfan! :argue: TripperFan 06-23-2005, 11:16 AM Well sorry didn't know anyone would get that worked up and what you said about more streetwise then me thats insulting so I woulden't be talking Tripperfan! :argue: You make a statement saying that girls in the 70s were "empty-headed" and then you wonder why someone would see that and find it insulting? Maybe that shows how niave YOU are! You don't think people my age who lived in that era don't read these boards or would find that comment, without any backup insulting? I'm just still trying to figure out where you get that thinking from. Just because it was 30 - 35 years ago doesn't mean kids were stupider or more niave then. And I say I was probably more streetwise than you because I probably was - its not meant as an insult at all. I was living on my own - in my own apt. when I was 15. I was doing daily ironing, vacuuming and making the family's dinner (a family of 5 and I was the youngest) when I was 10 (those were the types of chores a lot of kids were given to do back then). We were the original "latch key" kids when more and more mothers were going out to work. There weren't the same laws to protect kids (i.e. no kids under 14 left alone). I came home at lunch from school and would make myself a hot lunch - not just a sandwich. When I got home from school (as early as grade 4) I was alone. I would do my chores and then homework before my parents and older brothers got home. No parents driving you to school or other activities - we walked or took the bus. And finally, if you really want to know what makes you grow up fast and become streetwise, I was sexually molested almost on a daily basis from the time I was 5 - 11 - now THAT really makes you streetwise. I've provided backup and proof for my statements. Now if you can backup yours, and prove that kids today are any smarter or streetwise than we were, or apologize (if you can't prove it) then we're square. TripperFan 06-23-2005, 12:38 PM Exactly. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Thank you Jonathan. They probably won't post again because they can't backup their statement and won't be a big enough person to just admit that they were wrong, spoke out of turn and apologize. We'll see I guess. I LOVE FACTS OF LIFE 06-23-2005, 01:11 PM They probably won't post again because they can't backup their statement and won't be a big enough person to just admit that they were wrong, spoke out of turn and apologize. We'll see I guess. Well guess what I'm posting again Augh! I'm getting so fricken mad! It was a statement ok? No need to have a hissy fit over one little thing I said! :gary: TripperFan 06-23-2005, 01:32 PM Well guess what I'm posting again Augh! I'm getting so fricken mad! It was a statement ok? No need to have a hissy fit over one little thing I said! :gary: If someone said something ignorant about your generation you'd freak and you know it. Just as I thought - no backup and no apology. You've just proven my point. Thank you. :D I LOVE FACTS OF LIFE 06-23-2005, 05:51 PM Sorry Yes I've just proven your point Now lets try to be friends and forget about this silly little fight! TripperFan 06-23-2005, 11:04 PM peacesign: It's o.k. - I didn't mean for it to sound so harsh, just that I did know a lot of girls that took on more responsibility than Cindy ever did! And weren't nearly as whiny about it. I dunno, the character just irrated me and I jumped on your choice of words - to me, they appeared to be condescending. I do appreciate the apology. We're cool. ;) TheGreatPretender 06-27-2005, 05:59 PM i just find it creepy that in some of the early episodes she wore REALLY short little dresses. I LOVE FACTS OF LIFE 08-02-2005, 12:58 PM i just find it creepy that in some of the early episodes she wore REALLY short little dresses. Omg I know what you mean! Like in the epsiode the grass is always greener when Marcia says dad do we have to have the baby? And then Cindy comes in wearing that REALLY short dress I was like whoa nerrad 08-02-2005, 01:32 PM They made Cindy more goofy in the Brady Bunch Movie. She never acted that crazy during the series. Vegas Girl 08-02-2005, 08:49 PM Everything was more exaggerated in the movie to be funny, such as Jan acting weird. Jack1000 08-19-2005, 06:04 PM Well according to several sourses, Susan Olson was/ is intelligent. The series onset teacher/legal guardian Francis Whitfield commented that she was an excellent writer and artistic. Susan did feel that they made her "Cindy" character "stupid." She couldn't understand why people thought it was funny and cute to be stupid. My theory is that Sherwood, being the warm lovable, grandfatherly gentle soul that he is, was in love with her cuteness and charm from from the get-go. He loves to tell the story that Susan told during her first interview, "Well Mither Thwartz, I rode a horth on Gunthmoke and it came near a thnake! It wasn't a real thnake, it was a prop thnake." Sherwood laughed so hard he was literally falling off the chair and hired her immediately. She had a very sweet gentle innocence and charm. But sometimes older people like it when their children or grandchildren say silly things. I always believed that they made Cindy's charactor too young for the intelligence that she did have. I think they also made her dyslexic! Poor Susan! Remember in "Vote For Brady" when Cindy is copying the letters for Marcia's campaign posters? Instead of writing VOTE FOR MARCIA, she writes something like VOTRE ORE ARICIM! What about Alice's phone message from Mark Millard taken by Cindy: She writes on the note pad: Alice, Makr Malldrill Called! Than she says, when Alice questions her about the message: "That's your name, Alice!" On Mark Millard she says something like, "I may not spell good but I remember good, his name is Mark Millard." On her poster for Marcia, "Alice said just to copy the letters, she didn't say how." I think that the producers made her less intelligent because they believed it added to her cutness. But some lines just made her out to be stupid for instance: Cindy: "How come I always get peanut butter and jelly sanwithes?" Carol: "Because you LOVE them" Cindy: "Oh Yea! I keep forgetting" Greg: "I just don't get it, how did those cigarettes get in my pocket?" Cindy: (Raising her hand..LOL!) "Maybe it was magic!!!" :happyface It's interesting that Bobby was just a year older than Cindy and he never had any dumb lines, in fact early on he had some gems! At least Cindy's charactor got less "stupid" as the series wore on. TVFactFan 08-19-2005, 06:24 PM Well according to several sourses, Susan Olson was/ is intelligent. Yeah Cindy was defintely was special in the early eps-lol Mikado 08-20-2005, 12:24 AM She was supposed to be 5 years old or so, what did you expect, Einstein?? mstewart 08-20-2005, 02:16 AM I found the character Cindy to be quite annoying. They kept her as a baby throughout the entire series. Bobby was a likable child and joy to have around. He was a total goofball whereas Cindy needed to be pop one good. He was a total goofball whereas Cindy needed to be pop one good. I wouldn't say Bobby was "a joy to have around". He had attitude problems a number of times: When he was safety monitor, he was on a power trip. When he was picked to be on the TV show with Cindy, he was so cocky that he didn't even study (and didn't make it). When he couldn't win at anything, he became a sore loser....even throwing the magazine orders at his parents (I would have smacked him for that)! When he saved Peter's life, he developed an attitude and began bossing him around. When he made bets with Greg, he would also get cocky...and then ruin Greg's dates at the drive-in! ------- He was more of a "stinker" than a joy! mstewart 08-20-2005, 11:38 AM I wouldn't say Bobby was "a joy to have around". He was a mischevious little boy. Cindy was one of the kids that no one wants around because she was too babyish and nosy. Cindy was too out there for me especially in the early episodes. I am glad the show did not go beyond the 5th season because I can see Cindy getting on my nerves as a teenager. Vegas Girl 08-20-2005, 01:32 PM I am not saying that he was perfect. Stephanie from Full House had the same problem. TripperFan 08-20-2005, 01:37 PM Yeah, she was nosy. That's a trait of girls. Stephanie from Full House had the same problem. As well as Vanessa on The Cosby Show - then once she grew up a bit they handed the mantle down to Rudy. Girls that age just seem to naturally be nosy and tattletales.
