MTV's Comedy Central has signed comedian David Spade (Saturday Night Live, Just Shoot Me, 8 Simple Rules) for its planned weekly series sending up tinseltown.

Comedy has been trying for a while to come up with a Daily Show take on celebrity news. Back in the fall, the channel announced two potential access mag send-ups, The Hollywood Show, which it described as a Daily Show-like take on the ET/Extra entertainment news genre from Daily Show vet Brain Unger, and Gone Hollywood, hosted by Tough Crowd's Greg Giraldo.

The Unger project has been scrapped, Greg Giraldo is gone from the Gone Hollywood project--though they are looking for other projects for him, according to a spokesman--and Spade, who has been working behind the scenes on Gone Hollywood from the beginning, will now step out in front of the camera for the re-christened, The Showbiz Show with David Spade, slated for a September launch.

The show will be produced by Spade's partner, Fink. Spade, Gavin Polone of Pariah and Brillstein-Grey will executive produce. Gary Mann is in charge of production from Comedy Central's end.

A lot of people give Spade crap, but I like him.

His smartass, smarmy schtick works.

And he is pretty funny.

Too late for them to join network TV for this season, but cable is an option, but I doubt they'd go there.

I must say, I am happy to see that David Spade will be back on the airwaves soon. I really liked him on 8 Simple Rules!

I think with David its a 50/50 shot. Either people can't stand him or really like him. I think he's wonderfully funny and very talented. He cracked me up as Dennis Finch in Just Shoot Me!

Let's hope the rest of the cast will find work soon enough, and don't forget to sign my petition on the other thread to help bring 8 Simple Rules to dvd!

I am happy to hear David Spade has a new show on Comedy Central. :rolleyes: Now he won't have to go to the trouble of taking over another show, ruining it and then getting it cancelled. Also, if it flops like everything else he has been in I know about, it will be fun to watch he, his people and defenders squirm and try to shift the blame. At least, network TV is safe to watch again. :lol:

I've loved David Spade since I was 9!! :D I watched him on The Tonight Show last night and can't wait to see his new show on Thursday! And even though 8 Simple Rules was nowhere near as good as it was whe John was there...David gave me a reason to keep watching.
