It was canceled because John Stamos didn't want to be on the show anymore.

The finale IS a series finale... initially, a season finale had been written(because at the time WB was considering picking it up), but after that fell through, producers re-wrote the script and made it a series ender.

I have the DVD-R of the final episode. The ending was so emotional.
