View Full Version : Dick Van Dyke ~ Season 1
Munsters#1 06-17-2005, 11:27 PM I'm going TV on DVD shopping this Sunday, and one classic I have in mind is The Dick Van Dyke Show, I think I'll start with Season 1. How is the overall qaulity? Are there bonus features? Easy menu options? Are there ads before the show starts?
SawgrassSteve 06-18-2005, 09:34 AM Munsters1,
We were all pleasantly surprised by the quality and format of TDVDS on dvd. No ads, but some vintage commercials, some starring Dick and Mary. Not sure what's on season 1, but bonuses include an outtake, documentary, and some award show clips as well as commentaries by the stars (minus Mary), writers, and producer.
If you like the show at all, it's a good buy, and you're sure to want to purchase the entire collection. I've heard that some of the online outlets are cheaper than the retail stores, but I'd avoid the knockoffs and bootlegs on Ebay.

octobereve 06-18-2005, 12:14 PM I absolutely love all the box sets for The Dick Van Dyke Show! The quality is great and lots of extras. Season One includes the original pilot for the show which was called "Head of the Family" starring Carl Reiner as Rob and Barbara Britton as Laura. I can't remember if Season One has this or not, but for several episodes you can turn on a commentary feature with a couple of cast members commenting as they and you watch the episode. There are also commentaries that are separate extras, that you watch independent of the actual episode. The various seasons' sets include original cast commercials and promos, clips from various Emmy award shows, clips from a special Dick had in the 70's, an entire episode of some game show that I forget the name of which Dick, Mary, Rosemarie, and Morey played charades against another team consisting of Beverly Garland, I forget the other team mates. One of the box sets has an entire special about the Dick Van Dyke show with Charles Kuralt. Also Dick's promos for Nick at Nite.
Munsters#1 06-18-2005, 02:07 PM I'm probably going to get, Dick Van Dyke - Season 1, Green Acres - Season 2, and Sanford and Son - Season 5.

Hello, Steve and OctoberEve (that's one of my favorite episodes !)
Mind if I jump in and ask a question (and I hope this isn't too stupid of one  ) ?:
Is it guaranteed that these are complete episodes ? I would assume they are, but does the DVD set assure the viewer that they are ?
(Reason I ask: I still have audio tapes of the DVD show that I made back in the late 70's (!!) which contain scenes that are, of course, unceremoniously eliminated from the shows broadcast these days, e.g. on TVLand. So, I'm just curious. :) )

Lolac 06-19-2005, 11:20 AM "The Dick Van Dyke Show" season 1 won an award for the best classic TV sitcom on DVD last year by a trade association whose name escapes me at the moment. This show is outstanding and the DVDs are wonderful. You will not regret the purchase.

David VP 06-19-2005, 06:44 PM Save some cash, Munsters#1, and get this 5-Season Mega Set (below) of "The Dick Van Dyke Show".
Because once you buy ONE season set, you will have no choice but to want them all. You can try to fight off the temptation -- but it's useless to do so; just stopping at Season 1 would equate to trying to stop after eating just a single peanut -- can't do it. (As Murray Slaughter so aptly pointed out in another of Mary's series many years later, via the "Chuckles" episode of TMTMS.) ;) :)
So ya might as well save about $100 by buying the Mega-Set. :)

Thanks, Pat and "Lolac" for your input. I figured they wouldn't let such a classic show come out imperfect. :)

Munsters#1 06-23-2005, 02:58 AM I did hear about TDVDS five season set. So I decided I would save my money and by the series in one. Once I do, that's gonna be a lot of tv watching!
Did they take out every tiny spec? Are there any specs at all? Like white dots, black dots, scratches on the film, sound cracks, sound dropping, film cracks, flickering, graininess? Anything?
