Three weeks after being defeated by Carrie Underwood in the finals of "American Idol," Bo Bice says he's happy he lost.

"People ask me, 'What were you thinking while you stood there waiting for them to announce the winner?'" Bice says in the issue of Rolling Stone magazine on newsstands Friday.

The answer?

"Please, God, don't let me win this thing." Bice claims he never wanted the Idol crown to tarnish his Southern rock rep.

"The label 'American Idol' was not for me. I'm not a pop person. It would have been harder to play my kind of music if I had won," says the 29-year-old Alabama native.

In the May 25 finale, the long-haired rocker failed to bring in as many votes as Underwood, who won over audiences with her country charm. But runners-up on the Fox show have done well in the past most notably Clay Aiken.

This fall, Bice will record an album with producer Clive Davis, due out by year's end. He hopes to persuade Davis to include a few of his own tunes.

"I would rather put out an album of my own songs, and if it flops, it flops."

After all, Bice feels like he's playing with house money at this point.

"I just came in (to 'American Idol') being myself," he says. "And for some crazy reason, that's what people were wanting. Which is why I am truly the guy who's the most freaked out about everything that's happened."

He's still going to be controlled very much as to what he does with his album.

True.

But yeah, I noticed he didn't really care during the whole thing. That's another reason why I think Carrie had the edge -- because you actually saw the desire to win in her eyes. A lot of times, Bo would just act like this experience was just another gig.

So why the hell did he try out for AI if he didn't wanna win it? -_-

I hope he doesn't get all big-headed by trying to put AI down though. He already seems too humble of a guy and if he did do that, I think I would hate him again.

If he does that then he's a loser. But I doubt he will.

He tried out because of a bet with his mom, believe it or not :p

Also, even if you don't win, you gain incredible exposure on AI. Agents and producers watch the show from all over and you never know who you might get a call from even if you don't make it to the top. A lot of former contestants are at least working in their craft because of it. Some might not even want that instant celebrity - just leads to where they want to go.

Look at Constantine - he gained tons of exposure for his band and himself - that alone is worth a fortune in advertising.

I can see a lot of contestants being content not to win - just for the learning experience and exposure it provides.

I agree, he has a good attitude about it and I'm glad that he was runner-up. Of course Vonzell would have been great as runner-up too, but I liked all three that were in the top 3. Carrie, Bo, and Vonzell were great. :D
