That 85% of the Time, you will not find a TV show you really really want by requesting it on a Tape Trading Message Board. It took me two years to realize that I will not find a TVshow or Sports Game I really want by asking for it on a Message Board. I found two things I been searching for ust by developing a friendship with some traders and being referred to Other Traders. So my advice to anyone looking for a RARE TV show or Sporting Event, just know that you probably will not find it by posting the request, only by being referred to one trader to another and another. Now if some of you have found what u really wanted by posting it then I would say that's a good thing because It's doesn't happen that often.


BTW: I just posted this thread because I'm very very HAPPY that I found a NFL Game I been asking for since 2001 and I didn't find it by posting the Request.

I have no idea if this is true since in my career of trading, 9 times out of 10 I was the one approached, rather than the other way around. Once I acquired specific "wants" I quit being aggressive, and now I tend to choose items from the lists of traders (my want list is fairly specific but vast).

I think it could be true or not true, I have found many items many ways. I posted a want as an unknown on a college basketball board and ended up finding my rarity along with many others. You never know when something is going to pop up.

I found that asking for it rarely helps you find it. You have to be very patient and creative and that's how I just stumbled across something special two days ago. I'm now on the hunt for Checking IN, the Jeffersons spinoff, and I will not ask for it on a Message Board-lol

hi, i would have to say that i have had success posting on message boards. there are rare shows that i am looking for that i hven't found yet, but i have found some rare shows i was looking for through boards. i would say use any means necessary to find something you are looking for. i know i use alot of different avenues. thanks

Well I have Two Categories of Wants. One Category is something I REALLY WANT and the other is something I REALLY REALLY WANT. And I have been successful in finding shows I really want by posting on a message board. But never any success in Finding something I really really want. And that's probably because shows I really really want are things like-"Katie Couric's First Appearance Today Show on NBC" So you normally don't find things like that on message boards.

I have found quite a few of my wants from posting on the groups. As it stands my want list is pretty damn obscure and no one seems to have anything I need at this point........ Now and then though you find a guy with a treasure trove of great stuff.

I have to say that 85% is prob. true. Depending on how rare the show is your looking for. But if its being traded on a BB how "rare" can it be? The reason its rare is because you DO have to go looking for it. But it still starts with that first "im looking for......" post.

or it can be watching a trader's back. if i noctice a post of someone is looking for something and if i happend to know of a place where someone has what their looking for, i'll just send them a heads up even if i never traded with them before.

I've had some very good luck posting here and on other forums for certain things over the years, and made some decent friends along the way, too. I've also had amazing luck using Google or other search engines and just patiently going through screen after screen of hits, refining my search, until I find something I'm looking for listed on some secondary page of a trader's web site. I never assume that someone will want to trade with me, and I make it clear that "No" is an acceptable (if disappointing) answer when I make my request. Sometimes it's possible to set something up, sometimes people don't answer, sometimes it's frustrating, but that's life. If someone asks for money, I have to evaluate whether it's worth it to me or not. The one thing I won't do is trade xtimes as much stuff to get something (i.e., two or three times the amount of material I'd be getting in exchange).

Like Jen, I'm frequently approached by people because there are some oldies but goodies in my collection. The bulk of my collection is not on disc, and much of it is on Beta or PAL, which means the machines that play those tapes are not easily repaired or replaced if they go, so I'm very selective how I use those machines. And at this point, I'm not even considering putting shows on disc from tape for trade because I am so backed up on my own projects to preserve material to disc. So I probably turn down more trade requests than I accept at this point in time because I flat out don't have the capacity to take anything else on. If I have a show on disc already, that's a little different, but only a small percentage of my collection has been backed up to disc so far. And a lot of them will never see commercial release, and I'd like them on disc myself!

But the fact that I don't have a lot of available capacity is a factor in responding to posts where people are looking for things I might have. I think it's very important to provide a link to your trade list when you post a request, to allow a potential trader the opportunity to look over your list to see if there's something they need. If I find something I've been looking for (or wouldn't mind seeing) on the list of someone who's posted a request, I'm much more likely to answer them and try to set up a trade.

Very true. Most good traders know more good traders, and often many of those are offline or harder to find when online. Not uncommon at all.

Actually, I think that the bottom line is...the larger your collection, the more likely that you will approached by a trader with shows that you consider to be gems.
