View Full Version : How is Mayberry RFD filmed at WB and TAGS at Paramount
gilligan fanatic 06-12-2005, 08:50 AM I was watching Andy and Helen Get Married on the Warner Bros 50th weekend. How is it that The Andy Griffith Show was done by Paramount and Mayberry RFD at Warner Brothers? This reminds me when TV Land airs Mayberry RFD they always air Andy and Helen Get Married. WHen they did there TV Land Wedding thing in 2002 they aired it then and when they had Box Sets they would air it. I wish more episodes would air of it.
Munsters#1 06-12-2005, 09:47 AM I don't know why they switched from Paramount to Warner Brothers when they began filming Mayberry RFD, but the reason why you always seem to see Andy and Helen in that getting married episode, is because that was the 1st episode of MRFD.

I did not know that was the first episode but now that you mention that it is that makes a lot of sense, also Munsters #1, do you know where The Jim Nabors show was filmed at.
Munsters#1 06-12-2005, 10:48 AM I'm not sure, but you may want to go to imdb.com and see if they have any info on it.
gilligan fanatic 06-12-2005, 10:59 AM you know what I just learned at the IMDB THe Jim Nabors Hour was distrubuted by ABC. I always thought it was CBS becuase I thought thats why Gomer Pyle ended

Maybe ABC distributed it but the show itself aired on CBS.
gilligan fanatic 06-12-2005, 02:12 PM I just checked the COmplete Directory and THe Jim Nabors Hour did air on CBS so now I am real confused

IMDB is probably wrong. They do have some mistakes over on that website.
caladon 11-16-2005, 03:25 PM It's a fairly common practice for one studio or network to rent out their space to other studios or networks. The usual reason being space. If for example CBS has a new sitcom it wants to get into production and there is currently no available space at their own facility, then they start calling around to other networks or studios to see who does have available space.
TV Knowledge Fan 06-19-2006, 08:27 PM ...was originally filmed at Paramount (on the former Desilu backlot and soundstages where Andy's show had been filmed). Eventually, the production company switched to filming on the Warner Brothers' backlot when the Paramount deal was not renewed in 1969. Same thing with "HERE'S LUCY"- when Lucille Ball got a better deal to film her series at Universal City Studios in the fall of 1971, SHE moved off her old property, too.
lucyandethel 12-20-2010, 01:41 AM Andy Griffith got a development deal with Warner Brothers. In the deal, Mayberry RFD was moved onto the Warner Bros lot (or the Warner Ranch in Burbank actually.)
McGillicuddy 12-29-2010, 02:17 PM All I know is--I think Andy & Helen's wedding episode, should have been included as an extra on the dvd release of the final season of TAGS. Actually, I mistakenly thought this was the final episode, but later realized it was the pilot episode of RFD. And now come to find out that RFD is a Warner property while TAGS is Paramount, I guess that couldn't have happened.
I guess this is also why The Andy Griffith Show wasn't followed up by Mayberry RFD with dvd releases. Come on, Warner! We want the final seasons of Mayberry!

Bonanza also left Paramount around this same time, circa 1970, for WB. From what I've read, it was due to Paramount's raising its rental fees to use its sets. NBC, not Paramount, produced the series, so Paramount only made $ on this series from rental charges.
dwayne986 05-20-2012, 08:40 PM It actually happened between seasons 2 and 3, because Mayberry suddenly got a new look and Goober's gas station suddenly popped up in a new part of town. There was actually a park in the middle of the town square that never existed in the first ten years of what we saw of Mayberry.
My question is, whose brilliant idea was it to tear down the 40 Acres lot and develop it for shopping? It would've been a monster tourist attraction not unlike the Universal tour. "Superman"? "Gone with the Wind"? Mayberry? Would've raked in a lot of cash.

I have read that Andy & Helen's wedding was supposed to be the series finale for TAGS, but a CBS executive wisely held the show over the summer to be the premiere episode of MRFD. It ended up being the highest-rated episode of MRFD. The final-aired episode of TAGS was named "Mayberry RFD", and it served as the pilot for MRFD. Its writer, Bob Ross, was credited as the later series creator as a result of having written that pilot.

All the more reason to release Mayberry R.F.D. on DVD!

Yes -- although to clarify, that episode of TAGS was not the last one that was filmed. Ken Berry's character returns "in town," when watching the eps in the order of filming. The final TAGS episode that was made was the one where Goober is matched-up via computer dating, guest-starring Nancy Malone.
McGillicuddy 01-08-2013, 10:26 PM Now that Warner is releasing series' through their MOD program, maybe Mayberry RFD will get released, that way.

I still don't understand why it isn't already out

True, such a fascinating place 40 Acres was and remains, to me... the utter stupidity of throwing all that away is astounding.

Absolutely! Would have been a great place to see!
And poor Andy. Stuck with old lady Crump 'til death they do part.

"Criminal Minds" which airs on CBS currently is produced by ABC.
ILuvCarolBurnett 10-23-2016, 12:14 PM Mayberry R.F.D. aired from 1968-71. The show was shot on the same Desilu stages as The Andy Griffith Show until late 1969. Lucille Ball sold Desilu to Paramount in 1967. However, Paramount had no interest in keeping the Desilu-Cahuenga lot (the lot was about 2 blocks west of the Paramount lot.) They finally sold it off in 1969, and Griffith by that time got a development deal with Warner Bros. and decided to move Mayberry R.F.D. to Warner Bros. The Desilu-Cahuenga lot sat vacant for much the 1970s.
caladon 02-23-2017, 04:24 PM An interesting occurrence took place as a result of Mayberry RFD being filmed on the Warner Bros. lot. In the episode "Howard The Swinger," Howard sublets an apartment; sitting on a table in the background is the Maltese Falcon. I guess it was just sitting on a prop shelf and was used to dress the set.
stevea 02-23-2017, 09:31 PM The closing credits say the following:
Season 1: Filmed at Paramount Studios
Season 2: Filmed at Cinema General Studios
Season 3: Filmed at Warner Bros. Studios
As was noted in an earlier post, the third season is where the town looked really different. They didn't even try to make the interior set of the courthouse (which I think is only shown once in the third season) look the same.

I suppose Mayberry itself was shown in some episodes, I haven't seen MRFD in fifty years so I don't remember... what does downtown Mayberry look like in these later episodes?

That's what I was wondering... anyone have any screen shots of the "new" Mayberry?

Although I did watch some episodes of Mayberry RFD when I was a kid, I don't remember much about it, except that it seemed inferior to me original series.
I'll be interested to see how this "new" Mayberry looks.
Are any of the old locations kept at all?

So, Mayberry in Mayberry RFD looked like same for the first couple of seasons, I suppose.
stevea 08-28-2023, 09:47 PM The exterior shots looked really different in the third season. The service station looked so different they wrote into a script that Goober moved to a new location.
They needed the interior of the courthouse in that episode, and they made no effort to make it look anything like it used to.

I may buy the DVD just so I can observe these changes.
