Seniors Brawl After Salad Bar Dispute

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A dispute at the salad bar turned into a food fracas at an upscale retirement home, with a man taking a bite out of another's arm and other residents suffering minor injuries.

Police said resident Lee Thoss, 62, of the Spring Haven Retirement Community was picking through the lettuce, which disgusted 86-year-old William Hocker, who was standing in line behind him.

Hocker told Thoss no one wanted to eat food he had been playing with. Thoss yelled and cursed at him, Hocker told police, and Hocker called him a nasty name. Then, witnesses said, Thoss then began punching Hocker in the face.

In the buffet melee that followed, Allen Croft, 79, tried to grab Thoss, who bit him on the arm, reports said.

Thoss' mother, Arlene, in her 80s and also a Spring Haven resident, jumped in to break up the fight and ended up with a cut arm. Harry Griffin, 92, was standing at the salad bar and cut his head when he was knocked to the ground.

"All the old folks were either getting up to help or trying to get out of there," police spokesman J.J. Stanton said of the scene last Sunday in the well-appointed dining room, which features an ice cream bar and a pastry chef.

Arlene Thoss, Croft and Griffin were treated at a local hospital and released.

Stanton said all involved declined to press charges, but home administrators have asked Lee Thoss to move out.

You know what, this would have been a great skit on SNL or MADTV, either way this is funny as hell. :crazy: :lol: :crazy: :lol:

But I must say that this is just wrong. I agree with the older man he should not have been picking through the salad. But this is still funny as hell!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

I thought the same thing as I was reading the article, but for some reason, I had Jerry's father Mort in mind. Jerry's parents were more into the retirement scene with their Florida condo, early bird specials, spats with other seniors (Greatest Father tee-shirts, fights with condo members, Jerry's pen) things like that.

Funny as hell no matter which father you picture. :lol:

That's actually the EXACT scenario I was picturing!!!

I guess I was thinking George's dad as starting it because he's carried the same sort of crazy character (not exact, but close) to King of Queens.

Actually, anytime I see and odd old man doing weird things I think of Jerry Stiller! :lol: I'll bet if Seinfeld reads the article he'll be kicking himself that they didn't think of it and use it on the show.

I got a phone call at work one day asking me to come up to my mom's nursing home asap. She was in a ward room with three other ladies and one of the ladies (I use the term loosely) sucker-punched my 69 yr old, 70 lb. wheelchair bound mother!!! They had been fighting over the t.v. or something! To this day I don't think my boss believed the story!!

Turns out this old bag had even held pillows over other patients' faces in the past! Apparently the home couldn't do anything about it unless they saw it happen themselves!!!! I'd say maybe you might want to put a camera in the room??? Nothing like having a 80 yr old serial killer in a nursing home!! :rolleyes:

hahahahaha I thought the same thing at first.

At my school, a kid got stabbed over a cellphone earlier this year. Fun stuff.

They aren't! Crazy things go on in them! The same woman that smacked my mom would take her top off every time my husband and I would come to visit! Not just when I went - had to have my husband there. I think she thought she was putting a show on for him. Meanwhile, the poor guy's sitting there ready to lose his lunch! :lol: I still crack up thinking about it - the look on his face was priceless!


Next thing ya know, they'll be drag racing the wheelchairs and snapping their Depends at each other!

She was - had a nice purple bruise (she bruised very easily - her skin was like tissuepaper). Had she had more strength at the time, I'm sure she would have decked her - afterall, she punched a 17 yr old boy in the face in line at the drugstore only a few years earlier for calling her senile!! :lol: Funniest thing I've ever seen in my life!

Actually she passed away only 3 months after the incident. When the funeral home was wheeling her out in a body bag, as we passed the old b*tch I yelled, "There - I hope you're happy now - she's dead". I had to get one last shot in before we left. I was so angry at the home that they couldn't do more about this woman. She was a real danger to other patients.

LOL!!!!! I hope they are all ok! I've seen an old people fight before... I work in dietary at the nursing home and about this time last year two old people got into it. Johnny came into the dining room to give us some green tomatoes to fry for him, and Gail (the lady that helps us wrap silverware and stuff) saw the tomatoes and thought they were hers so she yelled at him to give them back, and he started hitting her and pulling her arm! It took a lot of people to break them up. Of course, I didn't even know anything was going on because I'm in la la land most of the time.
