It is a good list. Most of the people I would put on the list made the list. Though maybe they should have packaged all of the Cosby show kids into one spot and give other child stars a chance to make the list.

Only complant, is Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell (All That, Kenan and Kel, Good Burger) did not make the list. Those guys were hillarous.

Was there an age limit? The people on the list seem very young (maybe not Nancy McKeon). Is everyone under 12 or under 16? Maybe that's why no Kenan & Kel... although you have to admit, you can't put everyone in.

tvje
06-14-2005, 09:50 PM
Of course not everyone can make it. That is what make these lists so much fun, the discussion afterwords of who was snubbed, and who should have been higher on the list, lower on the list, and left off the list.

I think the age limit is 18 years old.

Wow, Sara Gilbert at number 38? Proof positive that most of these lists are garbage. She was one of the most realistic teens ever on television. And Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman should be switched. Fishman shouldn't be on the list at all.

Kel could be argued, but Kenan should have most definitely made the list. And he should have been up high too. He's gone on to SNL and has starred in a hit movie. 90% of the people on that list don't have a track record like that.

tvje

I agree, but I think Kenan and Kel are a package deal. If they made the list, they should have made it as a duo.

I don't liked the list Garry Coleman number one to me if you going to be the greatest child-star you had to have successful Adult career as well which means you should be number one Ron Howard beacuse started out on the Andy Griffith Show to me at least the best sitcom in the 1960s then I oringaly got his own series Happy Days But Henry Winkler took that away from him but it became One of the most Successful TV Series in the 1970s after Happy Days he became one of the Best Directers in Hollywood that Did Garry Coleman did after Diff'rent Strokes Be a Secricty Guard and makeing camos on bad reality shows to be they should be doing long term

well, this is about "child stars", not "people who started out as child stars and had great adult careers". While there are people like Ron Howard, Jodie Foster and Drew Barrymore who belong on both lists... Gary Coleman was probably the biggest child star of all time. While Ron Howard was memorable as Opie, his success from Happy Days and as a director happened as an adult. Gary Coleman may be treated as a joke and a cautionary tale about having the world and losing it, but for the time he was on Diff'rent Strokes, he was one of the biggest actors around. I remember reading that only Alan Alda, Carroll O'Connor and Henry Winkler were making MORE than him at one point on television. Time has relegated him to a joke, but he WAS huge on Diff'rent Strokes. Same with Macauley Culkin who is #2, he might be a joke now, but when he was popular, he was one of the top actors in Hollywood and getting paid more than many established actors 3-4 times older than him at his height.

This list convinces me of two things: (1) there obviously have not been 100 good child stars in history and (2) as usual, VH 1 has no idea what they're talking about...

46. Tina Yothers (FAMILY TIES) over 49. Kristy McNichol (FAMILY)? McNichol was HUGE in the 70s...

29. Valerie Bertinelli (ONE DAY AT A TIME) behind 6. Emmanuel Lewis (WEBSTER)... c'mon now, get real!

An earlier poster mentioned David Cassidy...how old was he when the Partridge Family went on the air? Was that the first thing he ever did on TV? (I just wasn't sure he qualifies as a "child star"... but if he does, he was definitely bigger, in his day, than at least 90% of the names on here)

THREE actors from SILVER SPOONS?!?!?!?! Yeah, right...

No Billy Mumy??? (WILL ROBINSON, LOST IN SPACE, in addition to a prolific career as a guest star on many other shows)

Angela Cartwright (Penny Robinson, and a von Trapp in The Sound Of Music....not to mention Make Room for Daddy).. I gotta believe that this beats, for example, #66. Jill Whelan (THE LOVE BOAT)

Can anyone explain to me what VH 1 was thinking?

No Jerry Matthers (LEAVE IT TO BEAVER)??? and I repeat...THREE actors from SILVER SPOONS?!?!?!?!?

No Princess, Bud or Kitten from "Father Knows Best"??

I take back what I said...there HAVE been 100 good child stars... VH 1 just doesn't know most of them...

No Buffy or Jody from "Family Affair"????

Well, not to worry folks...I'll publish the real top 100 childl stars soon, right here on this thread!! Stay tuned!

you know, you might be joking, but you've actually swerved into something here... Temple was the # 1 box office star for four or five years in a row in the 1930s... and Rooney was a huge star throughout the 30s and 40s... And that reminds me of the great "Out Gang" stars like Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat, Jackie Cooper, Stymie, Mickey Daniels, etc etc...

It's going to be fun putting together the real "top 100" kid stars... I don't think I'll be able to rank them in order though... but I'm working on the list... stay tuned

Melissa Joan Harte!!!!

Sarah Michelle Geller

The Cast of Dawson's Creek! they were HUGE in the 1990's!!!!!!

Tracey Gold!

Mara Wilson

People that were too low:

Nancy McKeon.. she should have been ranked higher than Mindy Chon.

Soliel Moon Frye, should have been top twenty!

why the Silver Spoons bashing?

Considering Schroder, Bateman and Ribero went onto even bigger success after that show ended, I think they all deserved to be on the list. You act as if they were on SS and you never heard from them again. Schroder was just as well known for NYPD as he was for SS, Bateman is probably even better known for Valerie/Hogan Family and Arrested Development than for SS, and Alfonzo will be known as Carlton on Fresh Prince. They all earned a spot on the list, it's not like they were a bunch of nobodies like the James At 15 guy.

I know SMG worked on soaps and the sort, but she was 20 when Buffy finally made her a star.

How many 'child stars' have successful adult careers? Not too many. Most of them have the hardest time trying to break back into showbusiness, and end up directing because people still see them as their character. For me,Fred Savage will always be Kevin Arnold,I dont care what he does, but he'll always be Kevin.

I'm not sure I know what you mean when u say she wasn;'t famous until 84. By 1982 she was well known by appearing on Jacksons Variety Hour in 77,Good Times in 78/79 and Diffrent Strokes in 81/82. I never liked her character on either show but she was as known as Todd Bridges by 1982

I love Janet Jackson music. She made a lot of great albums but I agree with you guys about her tv characters in her early days.

Here characters were not memorable. The most memorable, Penny from "Good Day" was a poor girl's Dee (What's Happening!)

Well, lets be real here....Gary may have been annoying, but he was basically the STAR of Diff'rent Strokes. The whole show basically centered around the character, Arnold for years. So, really there's no way to compare Janet's roles as Penny and Charlene as a full-fledged child star. Being the abused child who was later adopted by Willona is all she was known for. Penny added very little to Good Times. Ditto regarding her role as Charlene, Willis' girlfriend on DS. I think during the late 70's and early 80's....she was still primarily known as the youngest Jackson.

not true... The Olsen Twins, Rick Schroder, Janet Jackson, Nancy McKeon and Kim Fields are all examples of child stars that went on to have very decent careers, and become well-adjusted adults... its not all child stars, just some that don't have successful careers.

well, with all honesty it seems like media doesn't seem to respect soap stars. I know Josh Duhamel and Jesse Metcalfe both were successful and well-known soap stars for YEARS yet when they went onto Las Vegas and Desperate Housewives, the media hyped them up as "new stars", even though they'd been working in soaps since the late 1990's. I think Sarah Michelle Gellar was kind of the same way when she broke out on Buffy, same with Anne Heche when she went into movies in the mid/late 90's.

i would agree basically with that. except Jesse Metcalf was a soap star, yes, but not exactly a "successful" one, considering he basically got horrible reviews, was on the least respected soap and was never nominated for a single soap award, unlike Duhmale who got two Emmy nominations, one win and multiple, critically supportive reviews.

I would give Mary-Kate and Ashley more time before considering them "child stars who made it as adults", it was only like 2 years ago when they were making tweeny straight-to-DVD films that aired on ABC Family. In 5 years, we'll see if the transformation is successful.

However, I do agree that people overhype the "all child stars fail as adults" stigma. I remember watching VH1's Child Star Babylon where they talked about how if a child makes it as a star, it's INEVITABLE that he's going to have to end up dealing with doors slamming in his or her face once a certain age hits. That's not the case for EVERYONE. Was Ron Howard ever unemployed, whether as an actor or director (even in the years between Andy Griffith ended and Happy Days began, he was still getting jobs)? Has Jodie Foster or Drew Barrymore ever had a door slammed in their face because "you're no longer the cute kid from Freaky Friday/E.T."? I'm not saying this doesn't happen, but more and more child stars are making the jump to respected adult stars. Just look at how many who were kid stars in the 80's and 90's who are in their 20 or 30's now and still getting offers? Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Christina Ricci, Leonardo DiCaprio (if you count him as one during Growing Pains), Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, etc.... are all still getting decent roles despite being in the industry since they were kids.

regarding Janet Jackson:

I think people were aware of who she was on GT and DS, but she definately wasn't a breakout until the Control album. If you don't believe it, compare the sales to 1984's Dream Street album, which only peaked at #147, didn't have one hot 100 single and is currently out of print to that of 1986's Control, which was a #1 album and spent 2 years on Billboard and had five top 5 hits. You can certainly tell that she wasn't really a star until that record.

Very well-put. Drew, Jodi, Kirsten... those are ones that are obvious and i just seemed to blank when i was responding!

I'm glad Kim Fields was really high on this list. She also became a successful adult star on the Hit Living Single. Regine Hunter was a popular character on that show as well.

Any list that doesn't have Jerry Mathers as No. 1 can't be taken seriously. And to not have him on the list at all...this list is pathetic.
