Hello fellow Cheers Lovers,

I once again present to you, the official dvd thread, but this time we're changing the topic at view from Cheers Season Five to Cheers Season Six.

Here's what we will go through on this thread-

. Posting of your dream sets
. What about that art?
. Extras
. Rare Behind-The-Scenes Footage
. Favorite Season Six Moments
. and new season six games!

We have until September 13th until we all are holding set copies in our hands, so I hope this thread will help us get through the what seems impossible wait.

Daily, I will contribute something fun and new to the thread. As you can see, I'm branching out on this thread even more than the official season five thread. Please come and post, trust me, it'll help pass the time along!

Yours truly,
Pat

I can't wait 4 season 6! It's not the same w/out Diane, but what episodes are in season 6? (2 refresh our memories of life w/out Diane) Gracias Pat! :) Can't wait 2 get season 6 in September! (I thought dvd's come out 3 months of each other, I guess Paramount messed up on that again, 1st w/Frasier & now w/Cheers) I can wait 3 months

True, it was not the same without Diane, I felt the writing improved. (though the acting without the diane/sam chemistry sort of weakened due to there being no diane/sam relationship.)

Memorable episodes included-
"Home is the Sailor"
"'I' on Sports"
"Backseat Becky, Up Front"
"Little Carla, Happy At Least (1) and (2)"
"Christmas Cheers"
and "Airport IV"

I really liked the "Christmas Cheers" episode from season six. My favourite was the scene at the end, when everyone was watching the TV and there was a newsflash, with the newsreader announcing, "And now, in other news, Boston Airport has been forced to close due to the presence of a berserk man..." At which point (or maybe earlier) we suddenly notice that Cliff is the only member not there watching it and we just KNOW it's him - and it's confirmed a few seconds later, when the newsreader says he's throwing cans at an aeroplane!

Sorry to disagree, but in my opinion the writing was far better during the Diane years. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Rebecca years as well, but it is my impression that, once Cheers became a hit, the writers trusted more in the ability of their actors and the interaction among the characters instead of writing flawless, rounded almost-one-act-play scripts such as those from the first seasons, when Cheers was still a struggling show trying to win its audience (a similar thing's happening these days with Arrested Development). By the Kirstie years, they didn't have to convince anyone of how good they were anymore, and that's why I find the writing of that era a bit more "relaxed"... not bad at all, just not as perfect as before. It's more noticeable in further seasons than in Season 6, though, where some of the Charles brothers "heritage" is still present. I think their being less and less involved in the writing process damaged this aspect of the show a bit.

But of course, this is just an opinion, and I LOVE the Rebecca years! ;)

P.S. Thanks for the Peter Casey link, it's great!

I agree. Even in Season 5 the writing wasn't as sharp as it once was, but everything went together perfectly.

Everyone seemed to feel more comfortable in the later seasons. I think the earlier years were very funny, but smarter. While the Rebecca years weren't quite as smart, but were even funnier.

Glen & Les Charles (the producers & writers, along w/David Lee, Peter Casey & the late David Angell) left the show in the late 80's (according 2 the E! True Hollywood Story) b/c they were tired of cranking out a weekly tv show & had sooo much money. (Ted Danson got a hefty pay in 1992) How much did the cast make? Kelsey Grammer made 2.3 mil on Frasier, while the Friends gang got 2 mil as of 2002. :)

I think Ted Danson was making like $800,000 an episode. Everybody else was making good money, but nothing compared to Danson (which was a record at the time)

I remember reading/hearing that NBC offered Jerry Seinfeld $10Million an EPISODE if he would go on for a 10th Season of Seinfeld.

Bill Cosby made $1 milliion per episode before Danson. I believe Roseanne was the first woman to make $1 million episode as well.

I heard the same thing about Jerry as well. However, Jerry was smart enough to know a 10th season would've probably been a bad thing since the 9th season was a pretty mixed bag.

I absolutely love season 6. I agree with barwars, it wasn't as sophisticated as the first
5 seasons, but was definitely funnier thus more assessable. I always found Kirstie Alley to be a better comedic actress than Shelly Long as well, though I adore Diane. Sure, the Sam/Diane chemistry was gone, but I think the show explored more character relationships because of it.

Sure, the Sam/Diane chemistry was gone, but I think the show explored more character relationships because of it.

That's what I love the most about the Rebecca years: she and Sam were friends, lovers, business partners at a certain point, but above all: comrades, a kind of relationship one never suspected Sam would be able to have with a woman. It was a lovely thing to watch.

I remember reading/hearing that NBC offered Jerry Seinfeld $10Million an EPISODE if he would go on for a 10th Season of Seinfeld.

Then I have to admire Jerry Seinfeld even more than before! Turning down that kind of money for the show's sake shows integrity.

Ohh, then I'm mistaken. Thanks for information. I just presumed Danson held the record because that was who George always mentioned on Seinfeld when justifying a pay increase.

I hoped you all enjoyed the peter casey tidbits and the extended 'different' theme. Today we'll start Game (1).

Game (1)- True or False
1. Frances Sternhagen appears as Ma Clavin again this season.
2. Sam openly lets Rebecca know about 'I' on Sports.
3. Bebe gets a credit this season.
4. The Cranes' mother visits.
5. Sam returns to Cheers for a position as relief bartender.

This is a quiz, post your first responses. The person with the highest score out of 100 will be crowned 'Cheers' King. Remember, it is cheating if you use any 'help' with this. Don't watch any sixth season episodes until you've posted your answers. Once your answers are in, they may not be edited. I can see if they have been. (edited.) Also, no TVTome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only from your mind. I cant tell whether you cheated or not, but it'll bear on your conscience forever if you do. lol.

Coming as time goes on.......................................... The Posting of Our Dream Reviews.

..... More Exclusive Behind-The-Scenes Footage Coming Soon, Too!!!!!!!!!!!!.......

The Cheers E! True Hollywood Story also referred to Ted as the highest-paid actor on television. I guess their sources were wrong, too. :)

The Cheers E! True Hollywood Story also referred to Ted as the highest-paid actor on television. I guess their sources were wrong, too. :)

I guess they were referring to the last season? Since The Cosby Show ended the season before Cheers. I remember reading, Bill was the first TV actor to make $1 million per episode. This could be also due to the fact that people like Bill and Roseanne were also involved behind the scenes of their shows as well. I don't think Ted was ever a consulting or executive producer on Cheers.

Norm's Stool
06-11-2005, 03:38 PM
Yes, they were referring to the last season. His salary then was about $500,000 per episode, so I think your point makes a lot of sense: he might have been considered the highest-paid actor at that time -and actor only- because he didn't perform any other tasks in the show.

Speaking of TV specials, I'd like to see the day when Cheers gets the TV special it deserves --just the show, its making and the history of it, with real episodes footage and not just stills, and leaving aside the dirty laundry.
The E! True Hollywood Story is clearly NOT an example of it, at least during the second half. I have also a DVD special from the "Inside Television's Greatest" series, but they apparently didn't own the rights to the show's footage either, so it's basically made out of stills and voice-overs. At least, it avoids sensationalism.

No he didn't. I guess I'll tell you now why he got an 80 before this looks like its a fix.

Question 5 was his demise-
Sam returns to Cheers for a position as relief bartender.

His answer, "True", the right one, "False". He originally intented to be owner again, and forget about the last few months. Rebecca informed him she was owner and he couldn't get a job there. THEN, after begging, Rebecca offered him the relief bartender job.

It was a trick question, but obviously if I would've told you guys that before you woulda not been tricked quite as easily!

yeah. I wanted to contribute daily to the thread (see first posting) but I got off track as usual.

This is a test to see who can think of what season a particular ep. came from.

ex: "Give Me A Ring Sometime"- Season One (obviously  )

winner gets to post more.

again, 5 questions, 20 points each. I won't reveal the answers this time and for every other game from now on, until at least 5 have posted, or by Wednesday.

1. "What is, Cliff Clavin?"
2. "Backseat Becky, Up Front"
3. "An Old Fashioned Wedding"
4. "Ma Always Liked You Best"
5. "Suspicion"

Unless you have no pity, use no aid.

I'll try to find more interesting behind-the-scenes stuff soon, and since I'm no good with keeping up to my promises, COMING SOON!!!!!!!!! is the posting of my dream review. After I post mine, you all will post yours, but please don't post yours until I post mine. Extras and Cover Art Discussion. AND MORE GAMES ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ALOT MORE! Remember, we have to pass the time along somehow until the 13th of September. ;)

The people at Home Theater Forum are thinking the song You've Lost That Loving Feeling was replaced in the Back Seat Becky episode.

However, they can't even agree on if it was Lovin' Feelng or Unchained Melody that was used in the episode anyway, or if that was the change.

Me, I've never seen the episode, and was only about 4 when it originally aired, so I have no clue other than what I've read on the 'net.

Oh, and there's a similar disclaimer on the back of the Season 7 box art.

Anyway, I've watched the first disc, and the show is still funny in the Rebecca years. It's different, though. But a good kind of different.

The Obsolete Man
09-14-2005, 05:19 AM
Well... since I seem to have killed the thread with my last post, I might as well make another. :D

The comedy has changed with season 6.

the Diane seasons were more cerebral comedy. More wit, more subtle.

I've gotten more gut laughs out of the first two discs of season 6 than I did out of the first five seasons.

Now, that isn't a bad thing by any means. The show is still funny. It's just that there seems to have been a shift in the style of humor after the egghead character left from the... well, egghead type of humor, to the slapstick, gut laugh type I've seen in season 6 so far.

That's all.

jimbo913

Aha, that's not what I meant at all. I have absolutely no desire to ever grow up. Unfornately it is inevitable. I just hate always having to ask my parents to either bring me out to buy something or asking them to order something for me online. Especially with the TVDVDs... they don't understand why I would want to spend $40 on one, so when I ask them to bring me to the store to do so I feel like a complete fool.
