Says she didn't like not being known as much for The Miracle Worker (more for The Graduate because of the Oscar nod) but I'll ALWAYS remember her as Annie Sullivan. She and Patty Duke were incredible in that movie.

That's weird since she won the Oscar for The Miracle Worker.

I know - I don't understand it. And The Graduate was only made a few years after The Miracle Worker so it's not like it was a recent movie that she was more known for.

Have you ever seen the movie Jack? Hoffman looked like such a goofy kid in it. We were watching Meet The Fockers on the weekend and I was struck at just how much he has aged since doing that movie. (course it has been about 36 years!!!) OMG do I ever feel old now! :(

Anne Bancroft Dies at 73
Jun 7, 5:55 PM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Anne Bancroft, who won the 1962 best actress Oscar as the teacher of a young Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker" but achieved greater fame as Mrs. Robinson, the seducer of her daughter's boyfriend in the 1967 movie "The Graduate," has died, a spokesman for her husband, producer Mel Brooks, said Tuesday. She was 73.

She died of cancer on Monday at Mount Sinai Hospital, spokesman John Barlow said.

Bancroft was awarded the Tony for creating the role on Broadway of poor-sighted Annie Sullivan, the teacher of Keller, who was born deaf and blind. She repeated her portrayal in the film version. Despite her Academy Award and four other nominations, "The Graduate" overshadowed her other achievements.

Dustin Hoffman delivered the famous line when he realized his girlfriend's mother was coming on to him: "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. ... Aren't you?"

Bancroft complained to a 2003 interviewer: "I am quite surprised that with all my work, and some of it is very, very good, that nobody talks about `The Miracle Worker.' We're talking about Mrs. Robinson. I understand the world.... I'm just a little dismayed that people aren't beyond it yet."

Her beginnings in Hollywood were unimpressive. She was signed by Twentieth Century-Fox in 1952 and given the glamour treatment. She had been acting in television as Anne Marno (her real name: Anna Maria Louise Italiano), but it sounded too ethnic for movies. The studio gave her a choice of names; she picked Bancroft "because it sounded dignified."

After a series of B pictures, she escaped to Broadway in 1958 and won her first Tony opposite Henry Fonda in "Two for the Seesaw." The stage and movie versions of "The Miracle Worker" followed. Her other Academy nominations: "The Pumpkin Eater" (1964); "The Graduate" (1967); "The Turning Point" (1977); "Agnes of God" (1985).

REST IN PEACE ANN!!!

And that's right - Hoffman ISN'T that much younger - certainly not what was portrayed in the movie.

That's too bad. I wasn't aware that she was ill. Great actress, and she was a gutsy lady. Her husband Mel Brookes must be devastated.

RIP Anne.

She was excellent in The Graduate, and I've seen the miniseries 'Jesus of Nazareth' a few times, where she played Mary Magdalene and was great in that too.

:( This sucks, she was a great actress. I loved her in The Graduate, The Prisoner of Second Avenue (Co-starred with Jack Lemmon in that) and Torch Song Trilogy.

She played Mrs. Robinson in the film The Graduate.

I've heard of the movie, but I heard the song "Mrs. Robinson" done by Simon & Garfunkel. That was also in the movie. RIP: Annehttp://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif

I love that movie too, and I do the same exact thing. I mean there's not a lot of good Thanksgiving movies out there, that's probably the only one I've seen.
