Didn;t the show end with Mary having no job?
Mr. Television 06-07-2005, 04:38 PM Didn;t the show end with Mary having no job?
Yep Everyone got fired except Ted.
ClassicSitcomsGirl 06-07-2005, 05:31 PM I thought that was a bit ironic.....lol.
TVFactFan 06-07-2005, 06:56 PM Yep Everyone got fired except Ted.
Yeah that was Stupid. The star of the show gets nothing in the Finale-lol Reminds me of how Will ended up in the Finale of Fresh Prince
ClassicSitcomsGirl 06-07-2005, 07:26 PM it was stupid...but kinda funny at the same time  .....the look on Mary,Lou and Murray's face was pretty unforgetable
Kristen 06-07-2005, 10:10 PM Yeah that was Stupid. The star of the show gets nothing in the Finale-lol Reminds me of how Will ended up in the Finale of Fresh Prince
That was the entire point. It was supposed to be a surprise ending, since you'd think they would get rid of Ted.
Back to the original point of this thread, I've seen the finale a zillion times over the years, and Mary's "family speech" (as I call it) never fails to put a lump in my throat. :( It's def. one of the best finales ever, IMO.

MTM set the bar high as far as series finals.
TV DVD Fan 06-09-2005, 08:09 AM yeah, every time i see it, it makes me cry when mary makes her family speech and when they march out those doors for the final time..... it makes you wonder just how greatly a fictious television series can have such an effect on you, brilliant.
pat
ClassicSitcomsGirl 06-09-2005, 04:37 PM Just thinking bout it makes me wanna cry...........really!lol.The song they sing still gets to me.....
Heres my fave pic...
And the "Family"speach: "I just wanted you to know that somtimes I get concerned acout being a career woman.I get to thinking that my job is to important for me,and i tell myself that the people i work with are just the people i work with. And not my family. But last night I thought,'what is a family, anyway?'They're just people who make you feel less alone and really loved. And thats what you've done for me.Thank you for being my family."
treky 06-15-2005, 01:04 AM the scene where they're all hugging (of course, they didn't even mention those guys who were always in the back-and never even spoke-and noone ever spoke to them; wich I always thought was stupid! Also, the fact that noone even MENTIONED them in the finale) and they all go over to get a tissue as one-was ad-libbed.
Mikado 07-11-2005, 06:24 PM I remember thinking the ending ( The Kleenex box thing )was kinda funny, i was sad that there'd be no more shows, though
TJAMES03 10-11-2005, 08:20 AM There have only been two finales that have actually made me cry (a very close third being the finale to M*A*S*H when B.J. spelled out "GOODBYE" with rocks) and it was MTM and the other was The Golden Girls. To this day if I see these episodes, I will sniffle!
rjb182 01-01-2006, 01:19 PM A couple of things about the end of this series:
1. The night I graduated from High School, after everybody else had gone to bed, I actually thought of this show and sang-- out loud-- "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" like they do on the MTM finale. I managed to choke myself up suitably... ;)
2. About Mary's "family" speech: I think it's more true of this series than any other. A lot of show's characters talk about being a family after a while, but the thing about MTM is...
Almost every show's early episodes will be better than their later ones, because that's when they were strongest creatively. Mary Tyler Moore is one of the very few shows where I prefer the later episodes, because they *did* develop that sense of family... the early episodes, when the characters hardly know each other, feel weird to me. I'm used to these people being best friends! ;)
Just a few thoughts to start the year...

I had to re-read your post because I thought you were saying you graduated highschool the same year MTM ended
rjb182 01-02-2006, 12:41 AM Nah... but I graduated the same year they showed a rerun of it on Nick at Nite! That's something... ;)
scotsguy 01-11-2006, 12:20 PM I only saw the last episode of MTMS for the first time about two years ago, when I got the Very Best of MTMS.
What a great ending! You think Ted would be fired and he was the only one in the newsroom not fired.
To me MTMS was all about friendship,Mary's friendship with Lou,Rhoda,Murray etc and how great of the scriptwriters to bring bring Rhoda and Phyllis for the last show, still sniping away at each other but totally united in their support for Mary,in her time of need.
Mary's last teary look around the newsroom........
Great ending for a great show.
gilligan fanatic 01-11-2006, 01:47 PM I liked this. For a last episode it was great. Even for any episode it was great.

It was indeed a sad episode. One of the best finales ever that i always get teary eyed to.
TV Knowledge Fan 04-26-2006, 12:51 PM ...the original closing titles, seen ONLY on CBS on March 19, 1977, will finally be restored. It was a curtain call, with the audience cheering madly. An off stage voice began by saying....
"Ladies and gentlemen...for the last time.....MARY TYLER MOORE!!"
[she comes out and faces the audience on the newsroom set]
MARY: "Thank you...the BEST CAST EVER-- Ed Asner!!"
[he comes out to thunderous applause]
"Ted Knight!!"
[ditto]
"Gavin McLeod"!!
[him too, as a member of the audience cries, "No, no!!!"]
"Georgia Engel!"
"Betty White!!"
"Valerie Harper!!!"
"..and Cloris Leachman!!!!! Thank you....."

I would give my right arm to see that!! I've heard so much about it, I bet it's really touching. If Fox were to put that on the S7 set when the time comes, I would be the happiest girl in the world! hehe

:)yea I remember that when the show first aired back in 77 (and that summer, when CBS reran it). I was so dissapointed when N@N started showing the series in 89 or whatever it was, and not seeing that on the final episode.
Like you said, hopefully it'll be on the season 7 DVD.

So this probably wouldn;t be seen on the repeat aired on Sept 3, 1977? I defintely have to pull the tape tonight to see if it's on there

you sent me the tape of it and I don't remember seeing that scene at all
TV Knowledge Fan 04-27-2006, 02:17 PM ...the special "curtain call" ending was seen ONLY ONCE, on 3/19/77. When the episode was rebroadcast for the last time on CBS on 9/3/77, the "standard" closing credits were shown....and it's been that way ever since.

Yep, your right, just look at my version and it is the standard closing. by the way, something like that would never be included on a DVD. Just the standard closing
James28 05-19-2014, 10:07 PM (Bumping thread to ask this question.)
What would the viewership figures have been like for the final episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show? (I'm willing to take estimates.) I've seen the viewership figures of the final episodes of M*A*S*H, Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends, Magnum P.I., etc..
Willbo 05-26-2014, 10:00 AM It did not get the ratings like MASH, Seinfeld or Cheers got. I think it was ranked #5 for the week. But it was one of the first shows to do a series finale. Probably the best one ever.
James28 03-01-2015, 11:42 PM Info on MTM show last episode viewership:
According to the March 28, 1977 issue of Broadcasting Magazine, the last original episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show attracted a 25.5 rating and a 45 share of the viewing audience.
