View Full Version : My Grades for the seasons of the Jefferson on DVD
TVFactFan 06-07-2005, 02:28 PM not as good as season 2. So now we have to see if season 4 will be as good as 3 or worst. We all know that none of the future season releases will never ever ever be as good as SEASON 1. My grades for each season
Season 1-(A-)
Season 2-(B+)
Season 3-(C+)

are these grades for episode content only or do they include quality of discs as well? are the episodes edited, syndicated versions or originals? how do you rate the discs, story content aside?

No these Grades are for the entire season. Not the quality of the discs. But one ep was slightly edited on the season 3 DVD

The only reason I gave season one a A- was because of Mother Jefferson. If she was never seen, I Probably would have given the season an A+

I happen to agree. Mother Jefferson was a great foil to Louise, something she never had after she died. George had Florence and Louise had Mother Jefferson. Why should George have the brunt of the jokes?

Because there were more episodes in season two; and the only reason why I even liked the first season was because of Mike Evans...

There is no episode in Season 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 that is better than this episode in Season One-"Piano Man" Season 2 is the only season that is close in the entertaining category to season one. Season One will always be on a Different Level from all the other seasons..

Season 2 had way too much Mother Jefferson and I couldn't stand her. :lol: She was only in two season 3 episodes and I felt the cast was much better without her. I didn't really care for Mother Jeffersons interactions with Louise in season 2 and George always seemed toned down whenever she was around.

Also Season 1 had the Studio Audience jumping up and down, stomping their feet, and yelling which gave those season 1 eps VERY VERY ENTERTAINING. You can hear an explosion in the audience when George Chokes Florence and makes her run into the bathroom in the episode-"Piano Man"

I'm not sure, i know there wasn't a studio audience in the 80's. Another Audience explosion that comes to mind from season 1 is when George and Alan Willis were taking turns insulting each other-lol I will never forget that the audience went WILD when George said this to Alan
"Look you better get off my back and leave me alone because the teeth you save will be your own"

Yes. The back and forth between the two (and Helen) may be my favorite moment of the series. Its a tossup between the Marriage Counselors.

Seems as if the word for black people was censored on this board. Well, they did not censor it in 1975. Although on a clip on Entertainment Tonight in January 2005, they did bleep it. That angered me. It shows you the backward steps this country has taken with everything having to be "politically correct".

It started after the eighth season. Then they used the good old laugh track....lol
The episode Sorry, Wrong Meeting (better known as the Ku Klux Klan episode)was from the seventh season, and the moans and groans during that episode had to be from a live audience.

Which episode was it?
I'm guessing it's Louise Suspects, which was the first episode on the DVD and the first episode videotaped during that season, but the fourth episode shown on TV. The ending seemed a bit abrupt.

All of Norman Lear's shows stopped using studio audiences around 1980 or so because they found it to be more economical to add a laugh track in after they were taped. They had to "sweeten" the shows when they taped them live- that is add more laughs when the audience didn't laugh at something and edit laughs out when they got carried away with themselves. I'm not sure, but I think Jeffersons stopped taping with an audience as early as season 6, though I could be wrong. I seem to recall seeing some year 6 show and at the end they just played the theme music and we didn't hear Isabel Sanford saying that the show was taped with an audience. Maybe they didn't do it consistently.

What is it with Norman Lear and $$$$$$? 'economical'?????? My God, was this his gripe all the time??? Bad sets on Good Times??? Laugh-tracks??? Using the stars of AITF to sing the theme song instead of having musicians play the song because it was cheaper that way????? What else??????

It wasn;t anything major, the scene when george starts throwing a fit on the couch and puts the pillow over his head, Florence turns back and looks at Louise like-"what is his problem? Florence looks back two times on N@N, on the DVD she only looks back once. This scene is right before the first break
TVFactFan 09-01-2005, 04:23 PM Sometimes syndicated cuts edit the episodes slightly and actually prolong some scenes. It sounds weird, but if you ever see the I Love Lucy DVDs, they show examples of this.
Yeah They did prolong that scene. On N@N it was prolonged long enough for viewers to see Louise look into the studio audience. On the DVD, it's cut 5-7 before louise does that
