View Full Version : How many traders would be very annoyed if they were looking for a certain show and
TVFactFan 06-07-2005, 01:21 PM another trader responds and says-"i have the show you are looking for but I'm not trading at the moment" Is that the weirdest reply you can ever recieved from a trader? I recieved that response on a Sports Board and the guy said he had the game I was looking for but not trading at the moment. You know i was ready to explode-lol
Agent 13 06-07-2005, 01:41 PM "i have the show you are looking for but I'm not trading at the moment"
Being one of those people that regularly have to turn people down because of time/money restraints, I have responded in a similar fashion. I would NOT have said such a thing if a trade wasn't a possiblity.
If I received a nasty post or email in response to my comment, I would definitely think twice before trading with someone who has that sort of disposition.
jasimon1 06-07-2005, 01:43 PM Actually, I honestly think it was kinda a nice thing of the person to do. All he's saying basically is that right now he doesn't have time to trade but maybe he will have time in the future if you don't find it from someone else. He's giving you a fall back guy, especially if its a really rare game. I'd much rather get that response than either no response at all (leaving me thinking no one has it) or get a trader that says sure they can get it to you and then either later decides he is too busy or just takes forever with no excuse. Honestly, a trader that said that to me would gain major trust points.
stoogedog 06-07-2005, 02:03 PM hi, i would be disappointed by that, but not mad. i would be glad that someone had the game or episode or series that i wanted. i would response back letting them know that i was glad they contacted me and disappointed that they weren't trading at the moment. i would also tell them to contact me when they do start back trading. i would keep there email address as well for future contact to keep in touch for when they did start trading again. i have contacted traders that weren't trading at the moment and then they either go ahead and make a small trade with me or we have future contact. thanks

jen I don;t want you to think i'm being a smarty, but what good does it do the trader to know you have something he/she really really wants and can;t get it because you are not trading at the moment?-lol

Well i personally prefer not to recieve a response like that if it's something I really want because I was in a similar situation back in march. the guy told me he has the hard to find tv shows I'm looking for but won;t be able to trade until April. So i was patient and waited 4 weeks and today is June 7th and I have not heard NOTHING-lol So u can see my point
jasimon1 06-07-2005, 02:56 PM I know you're not talking to me (even though my name is jen too) but like we have both said, it's a person to fall back on if you can't find it somewhere else. Them not being able to trade now doesn't mean they will never be able to trade. Really, in this hobby, do you really expect to just ask and immediatly receive? I wish that was how it was! I know I'd be a lot happier if everytime I asked for some obscure thing, I got a reply saying someone has it and can ship tomorrow but reality is, this is a waiting game. Waiting to find someone who has it and waiting till that person can get it to you. That trader just simply can't get it to you immediatly is what they are saying

well i decided to move on because i don;t have time for games and if it's something I'm on the serious hunt for then I won;t wait too much longer. That's kind of likea female saying to a guy at the bar, "i would give you my number if i was looking to date but I'm not dating at this moment"-lol
jasimon1 06-07-2005, 03:12 PM No, a female saying that in a bar is code for get away from me you weirdo.

T-Greg 06-07-2005, 03:21 PM This same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. At least I know they have it. I'm just waiting for him to start posting again, so I know he's available for trading.
jasimon1 06-07-2005, 03:25 PM This same thing happened to me a few weeks ago.
For a second there I thought you meant the girl in the bar thing and I felt really bad that I said that!
tdubel 06-07-2005, 03:41 PM Solomon,
Correct me I am wrong, but didn't you tell me that you would not trade a certain show for something you wanted from me because you were not going to let it go because of its rarity??? Truthfully, that is why we probably will not trade anytime soon. As most on this board know, i have quite an extensive collection and will make just about any deal with anybody so that a trade can be made. A lot of times I take stuff that I am not looking for per se, but to make the trade, I do it b/c I know the other person really wants the show. I thought your response was somewhat ridiculous as I believe I have always been very accomodating to your wishes in many past dealings. So, back to your post here, the person was not being unreasonable at all, as others said, at least they responded and if you really want the game be patient, I am sure they will be trading again.

hi, if i were you, i would contact the person since it has been awhile since last contact. i usually keep emails from traders about situations like this. then that way if someone says they can trade in the future, then i have the info for contacting them myself. as most everyone here knows, we owe we owe so off to work and other important matters, and may forget to email someone that we are caught up and can trade again. again, i would make contact with the trader again since they haven't contacted you. thanks

Ok let me explain tom. Yes i wasn;t ready to let go of the show because what i wanted from you i could get from someone else. Baby I'm back is not on the same level of hard to find as Out of the Blue. So let's say I found out that you had a ep of Checking In from 81, then Out of the Blue would be on that same type of level and i would trade. But with me it's all about the level of how hard it is to find. I trade so i can see things I never saw before so since I seen BIB, i wasn;t ready to offer something like Roll Out for Baby I'm back. Yes we had some good trades in the past but I guess in the past few months I acquired and paid for a lot of rare shows. Shows Like On the Rocks, Out of the Blue, and Roll Out i had to pay money for that so u probably can understand why i can;t let it go that easily.

Another good example tom would be if you had the Grady episode when Aunt Esther makes a guest appearance or when Rollo makes a Guest appearance. I will send you On the Rocks, Out of the Blue, and Roll Out for just one of those eps-LOL
tdubel 06-07-2005, 05:17 PM Solomon,
Nada, nope, no way. That is my thoughts on your logic. This is tape trading, we do not own any of the shows, therefore there is no rarity. In rare cases, accomodations are made in the form of money or lopsided trades, 3 for 1, etc. BUT with me, having a collection that is truly unmanageable and is upwards of 20,000 different discs, tapes, film prints, etc, I find nothing is on or off the table as I said before, I do my best to make a trade with anyone since I believe in trying to make more shows available to all that want to watch them. Availability is what tape trading is all about, and you will notice the long time tape traders are not out to scam anybody or bleed people dry, they are here because it is a hobby and of course a quest to find the shows. Sometimes finding them is as fun as watching them.
jasimon1 06-07-2005, 05:19 PM Sometimes finding them is as fun as watching them.
Wait, you actually have time to watch shows after finding them? Boy! I'm jealous!
tick26 06-07-2005, 05:26 PM really, i would be careful receiving an email like that. they might not be trading at the moment, but to save their own butt and not risking getting their stuff taking away from the feds, they're not going to say, "i'll sell it to you." they want you to ask if they're willing to sell it. most likely they're going to set it at a high price. And if you've been searching for it for years, chances are, you'll pay the high price. traders know how are it is to find stuff and why would a trader make a responce like that to another trader? i can understand if you emailed them first, but vice versa, i would be very careful. it's a red flag.
tdubel 06-07-2005, 06:12 PM jasimon,
Only about 10% of the time do I actually get to watch them!!
Tom
loren 06-07-2005, 06:39 PM my take
i would rather have that than sit and wait 3 months for it to show up
and turn down two other trades for the same thing
and then find out after 3-4 months that they are too busy or whatever
in the next guys case, maybe the trader didnt want to fool with one game and just said that to pass you off
i have had many trade offers that were looking to trade a few discs, i just tell them it costs too much in postage to fool with them, and i am up front about it on my trade web site as far as a base number to trade
lazygrae 06-07-2005, 08:53 PM My $.02:
Like most others here, I too would be appreciative of such an email. One, it tells me he's not a scammer or else he'd offer right away and just send nothing after receiving a trade/payment. Two, he's letting me know he has it and giving me his email address so I can contact him in a couple of months to see how things stand if I've been unsuccessful locating it elsewhere. He's the one who's got what I want, therefore it's my responsibility to remember him and take up the matter at a later date, not the other way around. I would not expect him to remember to contact me down the road once my want post has faded into obscurity, nor would I expect him to save my want post so he can reply later.
I agree with Tom about this "I will only trade this rare show for that rare show" garbage. It's okay to not want to trade rare stuff, but if you don't want to trade it, keep it off your list and offer it discreetly when you need or want to.

You are right, I will take those shows off my site right now. That's how they do things on the SportsBoard when they pay big money for certain games. So Tom I apologize to You for having those shows listed on my site.
loren 06-08-2005, 05:49 PM i will make another bold statement
i have about 5300 dvds on my trade list
if you have anything i want, MY LIST IS OPEN FOR YOUR PICKING
i dont knit pick about 2 epsiodes or two discs
you add something i want to mine, you name it --its on its way
i dont have time or the energy to worry about this or that rare disc or episode
thats the same knit pick stuff that ruined the sports card industry, everyone thought they had the greatest card, and no one traded--
snl75 06-09-2005, 05:36 PM ive had to dissapoint a few people by telling them that i have a show they are looking for but that because i only have one vcr right now i cant make trades i know its very annoying and i really hate having to disspoint people but i also didnt want to lie to them so when it comes to things like that im kind of between a rock and a hard place

You are searching for those last 4 episodes of one particular series, so in a way, they are "rare", or perhaps I misunderstood you.
As for myself, I never hoard any series/movie, even if I've spent good money for it. I enjoy sharing my collection with other fans, and I've found that most of my "regulars" feel the same way. :D

I guess all traders are diiferent. I guess if I paid lots of money for a sporting event or TV show, I would want to keep a lock on it for a while to see what I can receive in return for it. I guess that's how we do things on the Sports Board. They are not into sharing on the Trading Site. The attitude is what can you offer me?-lol

TVFactFan 06-12-2005, 11:32 AM ..."I have what you want but I'm not trading at the moment" is a pure classic power trip. It's a form of sadistic game-playing. Someone says that to me, they're history. That statement is a creep detector. The person who makes it is a creep, which is a valuable piece of information. Such a person will probably try to jerk you around after you send first and attempt to extort more DVDs from you than originally agreed, or suddenly demand money in addition to an even 1-for-1 DVD trade, or some other form of sadistic game-playing.
The instant someone says that, drop 'em like poison. Walk away. One of the things I have learned well in 26 years of DVD trading is that NO ONE, absolutely *N*O* *O*N*E* in the circumambient universe has anything on video that is completely and totally unique. Typically, a whole lot of folks out there have what you're looking for, no matter how rare...you just have to track 'em down. The instant I encounter game-playing or power trips in someone who proposes a trade, I press the eject button on that clown and never deal with 'em again. Perhaps this explains why I have virtually never been ripped off or scammed. As soon as you start to smell that kind of power trip, it's a sign of bad things to come.
Another classic example of game-playing and power trips is a list full of rare stuff with many items marked NOT FOR TRADE. So what the devil is this stuff on your TRADE LIST for??? It's not a "NOT FOR TRADE" list, is a TRADING list. It makes NO SENSE AT ALL to list al lthe episodes of some rare series on a trading list and then state NOT FOR TRADE. That's a pure sadistic power trip, like offering water to someone wandering in the desert, then pouring the glass of cold clear water out on the sand at the last minute and walking away laughing. That kind of behavior is not only infantile and pathetic, it's deeply creepy and contemptible.
That said, bear in mind that some folks have lives outside video trading. If you hear from someone "I'm all stacked up with trades right now but would like to trade with you in a week or two," or something like that, try e-mailing that person again in a couple of weeks. One of hte basic facts about life is that social networks tend to form power laws, so that 20% of the people have 80% of the wealth in a society, and this applies to video traders. 20% of the video traders tend to have 80% of the rare series out there. This means that those video traders with large collections will typically be very busy, getting lots 'n lots of e-mails every day. It's impossible to keep track of all those e-mails, so if I don't hear from someone who proposed a trade after a couple of weeks, it's all too easy to forget to e-mail that person. This is why it helps to keep e-mailing someone who is willing to trade, but busy. IF the person is reasonable they won't be bugged, they'll be thankful to yo for reminding that you were going to do a trade with 'em.
That guy who says this on the Sports Board has EVERYTHING because he had connections wirth CBS and just like to remind Traders he Has it all-lol I was lucky enough to get CBS eps of One Day at a Time from Him last month.
tick26 06-13-2005, 05:57 PM i never thought of power trip raretvon dvd, but a good one.
