I don't know about you guys, but I am going to miss TVTOME when it ceases to excist later this month.

I checked out its replacement website, www.tv.com not even close to TVTOME. They don't have Notes for the episode guide. I am sad TVTOME is leaving. Why are they are taking it away?

I prefer TV Tome, and this is just first impression.

The Design is overpowering, It has Ad's on the Background. Overall it's too flashy.

And TV Tome's friendly URL'S are gone, while TV Tomes URL'S weren't so User Friendly they were Search Engine Friendly - without that, this site could have a hard time getting allot of pages listed.

I read about TV Tome switching over to TV.com a month or so ago. I did not like it then and I like it even less now. TV.com has an awful, awful design. Hardly user friendly at all. It was simple and fast to get to around the TV Tome layout. With TV.com you have to wonder just what they were thinking when they laid things out.

It does have some nice features, but is crowded with allot of not needed junk.
The colors certainly are hard on the peepers.

From a web design standpoint, TV.com is actually very nice (my only major complaint is that the scrolling action of a lot of pages is slow). The graphical layout is appealing and yes, the ads are flashy, esp. the ones in the background, but CNET does have to make money. (I am actually a web designer, so TV Tome looked "amateur-ish" for me in its design.) It is different from TV Tome, but different doesn't have to mean bad...it just takes some getting used to. The navigation scheme was actually pretty clear-cut for me, (it actually isn't different from TV Tome, just in the way it is visually laid out), and I LOVE some of the interactive features, such as show/episode ratings and the ability to "add" a show to your profile and track it. I do not like that the episode notes are gone, but that's where we come in, since TV.com is supposed to make it easy to submit that kind of information. Still yet, I also like how the site can give you "similar" matches because real TV fanatics will love seeing what other shows they could get into, and I like the "Top Episodes" feature! ;)

Overall, I think TV.com will turn out to be a vast improvement over the old site, once everyone spends some time with it and gets used to it.

Raisingdad2004

Well, the Design is fully XHTML Transitional Compliant so thats a plus for people on different browsers, but it does not use mod_rewrite like TV Tome did, although I would assume the HTML files are fake - mod_rewrite, there are still URL'S with query strings, especially on the forums.

You can join Fantasy Teevee from their own site, that was not something unique to TV Tome.

http://www.fantasyteevee.com

The overall look of it is nice, but the simplicity of TV Tome is missing. I doubt it will ever be down as much or slow as it has been in the past.

I like the new website. It has all the old features of the original (You won't miss anything. It's all been moved.) plus new sections that, once you get used to them, will be fun to use and very informative too. I like the parts where: they show similar sitcoms to the one that you're looking at, list each series by different categories, and where they give you a chance to rate each series out of 100 (I gave "Full House" a 1! ) and talk about them as well with other fans. Visually, it reminds me of the Zap2it website, which is where you'll find the Fantasy TeeVee game, only I like TV.com's look better. All in all, I give the new site 2 thumbs up!

If there is a website out there that I miss, it's AllYourTV.com. I don't know if they've gone out of business or what but I haven't been able to enter it for over a week now. I would use it to look at the latest Nielsen ratings, since it was the only site I've seen that shows the entire ratings picture, not just the Top 10 or Top 20. If TV.com can do that, then there really is no need to search anywhere else for your TV fix---except here, naturally!

If you type in tv.com in your browser and it doesn't do anything, that could also be a temporary Internet connection problem, or even a software problem. Personally, I've always been able to get to the site, and I probably have one of the iffiest connections around! hehe :p

Also, TV Tome wasn't bought out. If you look at the old site and the new one, you'll notice that they both have the CNET bar at the top, meaning they are owned by the same company.

Actually CNET did buy TV Tome, the CNET bar was added to the top of TV Tome while it made the transition from TV Tome to TV.com

MotownMurph

I have used tvtome.com, but I rely far more on www.imdb.com, which tends to have actors' and actresses' birthdates for a much greater percentage of its entries than its tvtome.com counterpart.

Yes there are episode guides but that feature at the bottom of the episode synopsis which was additional info about the episode is not at the bottom anymore. That feature was called NOTE

Tvtome was 100 times better than the new site. All the old messages from the tvtome forums are gone. All the episode notes are gone. There is less information about tv shows at the new forum, and it is less user friendly.

How much is this place worth?

I hope this is not a new trend on the web. Site A is very popular and supported by a large fan base. Site B is commercial and wants all the members of Site A, so they buy Site A and shut it down.

$5 million is a lot of money.

It is time for someone to start a new tvtome, in the spirit of the old community.

robby76
07-03-2005, 12:31 AM
Well Site B will be in for a rude awakening and realise they made a huge mistake, cos Site A fans aren't so fickle and actually do care about the contents and navigation (i liked seeing all the season episodes on one page, with guest starts and notes and the number of seasons at the top - quick and easy). Well done to site A for becoming millionaires... I probably would've done it too. Let's hope Site B puts things back the way they were.
