Try pronouncing it.

Krzysztof Stefan Gryglak
(Kshish-tuhf Ste-fahn Gryg-lahk) And Gryg as in rhyming with "grid." Short i sound, not long i.

But Krzysztof is the long version. The short version meaning is Krzysiek (Kshish-ehk).

Noooooo, Polish is far from being a Germanic language. No articles (the, a, an), far more grammatical cases, hard to pronounce words (I could show you a few tongue twisters), etc. Though German has it's fair share of really long and hard to pronounce words (I spit all over someone when I say pfanne  ). The only thing it has in common with German is that there's a lot of borrowed words in Polish from German, and vice versa. Which is why it's hard for Russians to understand us; because our vocabulary is too Germanized for them.

Shoot me for being a linguaphile. :p

And I'll bet when the family's together, that's how you're each referred to!

I had a friend who was Kathy. Anytime we were together, people would call us by, "Kathy with a 'K'" or "Cathy with a 'C'"! Drove me nuts, so I tried using my middle name for a while (Patricia), but it wouldn't catch on but by then we weren't hanging out together as much so it wasn't so bad!

I get it all - Cathie, Catrina, Caffy (my niece), Catherine (if I was in trouble). My mother-in-law can't pronounce the "h" either so I'm Catty to her.

I usually end up just going by Cath or Cat.

Laura Catherine is really pretty sounding! And of course, I prefer the "C" version! ;) (no offense DawsonGirl! :D )

SO good - they used it twice!!

I've GOT to find some kids to name. When my husband and I used to think of names for our future kids (which never happened), we had decided on
Jennifer Nicole (for a girl - Nicole coming from Nicole Brown Simpson)
and Tyler James (for a boy - James was my father's name). I've always loved Peter but couldn't fit it in right. I've always liked Anastasia too (but use the Stacy version for everyday)

Those are some great names! I don't have kids and I'm not with anybody, but no way am I naming my future son, Robert. I like the name, but we have way too many of them on my mom's side. There are 5 on my mom's side. Thank god I wasn't a boy or my sister wasn't a boy, because our name would have been Robert Mark, which is my dad's name reversed. Thankfully my mom said no to the name Justine. Dad wanted to name me that. If I ever do have kids, if I have a girl I'd like to name her Katelyn Nicole. I've always loved the name Kate.

I like that. It reminds me of Anne of Green Gables. She hated the spelling of "Ann" so she'd say, "My name is Anne with an "E".

I'm Kaitlyn. Spell it any other way and you die. I changed it myself just so I would like it, ohkayyyy?

That was our spring musical!!! Anne Shirley loved me (Miss Stacy) because she could distinctly tell I was saying her name with the E and hated Mr. Phillips because when he wrote "Ann Shirley has a terrible temper" on the board after she slammed her slate over Gilbert's head she pointed out that he left out the E...haha, I'm such a geek, it was so cute.

You know that's probably where I got it from!! I LOVED Anne too - read the whole collection.....ahhh such cool childhood memories! Gilbert dunking her pigtails in the inkwell!! Good old Canadian fun! PEIs beautiful!

Anyway, it was in grade 8 that I decided I was bored with "Cathy". I was really getting into my art then and the "y" looked crappy to me on my signature (for paintings). I tried "Cathi" - looked like a stripper or too bimbo - tried "Cathe" - looked like an abbreviation of cathetar (who wants THAT?!) So it ended up as "Cathie" as it looked the best.

I'd love to try to change my name to " ? " - and see what they'd do at the gov't office when I dropped that one on them!

It's usually Cathy and Kathy with a K. I came first, so I get priority I guess.

I had a friend named Cathy, spelled the same way. People would say Cathy and we both responded.

I've gotten Cath, but never Cat.

I know! People always get my name wrong. My sister's bf's mother calls me Kirsten. At her son's graduation I had to sign the guestbook and she literally stood over my shoulder and watched me write "Kristen". Even though she saw me write my name, she still calls me Kirsten.

P.S. I have a LOT of similarly-spelled gals in my family with some variant of the name Kristen. I have Kristin, Kris, Kristen...I have a hard time keeping them straight. :( And it doesn't help that I have a lot of friends with the same problem. Kirsten, Kristin....:faint:

No articles?? Wow, that seems strange to me.

OMG...there's some German word on this plastic bag I got with my camcorder that's about 2 feet long. How do you say pfanne anyway?

Nothing wrong with that. Being a linguaphile could make you a lot of money.

The Polish would have made great spies during the cold war then.

Yep, no articles. But it sounds natural and I'd be confused if we DID have them. But it works out because instead of using articles, we have declensions, meaning you add on endings to nouns and adjectives, depending on what case the sentence is in. So they pretty much function as articles, which is why we don't need them. At least it's not like German where you have the choice to use der, das, die, den, dem, denen, depending on the gender of the verb, the case, whether it's a direct/indirect object, etc. Gives me a headache.

You pronounce is (p-fahn-nay). You pronounce both the p and the f, and you get that puff of air between them. I'm always afraid I'm going to spit on someone when saying that.

She used Mackenzie at first as her parents didn't want her using her real name at her age on the internet (makes sense). She's been here a while now and I guess feels a little more comfortable using her realy Niky. ;)

That's what always pissed me off about Spanish. Those damn gender words and having six different ways to say verbs. It's just they said, she said, I said, we said, you said...it's all SAID.
