I gave Barney Miller a chance on Saturday and i watched about 9 eps but I could not get into this show. I watched the eps on Comcast on Demand one ep was ok with Linda Lavin as a Guest star. I wanted to watch the ep with Florence from the Jeffersons as a Guest star but the episode was already gone. But overall this is not a show I can watch and enjoy. Also the Fish character is too DRY and Boring and I hated when he talked because i felt myself falling asleep. I'm still trying to figure out why any character of this show was spinned off when the show itself wasn't that big of a hit-lol But BM is not my type of show

That's too bad Solomon. I can see you thinking Fish is pretty dry. Did you catch any eps with Chano in it?

I wish I could hand pick some for you that I think you might like better.

I'm glad you gave it a chance though!!! Never hurts to give things a try.

It's funny - we must have almost opposite tastes in sitcoms. I saw your other thread about 10 most unwatchable shows, and I found I liked almost every one of them (except Laverne & Shirley). Then when I saw your list of spinoffs that you'd buy, there wasn't one on there that I would want!! :(

That's o.k. - I still love ya! ;) :D

I will try to keep watching as they add more eps. But why was fish such a big hit? What was he doing that was so funny? Maybe that comes after season 2-lol

Personally, I did not think that Barney Miller became a decent show till the 3rd season after Chano left and Fish was seen in a very few episodes...

You didn't like how he always complained about the bathroom?

I always liked Fish (the character not his show) and I like BM but it took me many years to grow to like it.

That's good - I like your open mind buddy!!

I liked Fish because of the deadpan delivery he had. I guess he might have appealed to a little older audience because I don't think I appreciated him as much until the repeats - same with Chano. When I was younger, I liked the obvious goofy Wojo, and the "Jive-talkin'" Harris more than the other guys. I grew to like them more as time went on so it might be the same for you.
Think of Fish as just the older guy who's really waiting it out for retirement, but isn't because he doesn't know what he'd do with himself. He loves his wife Bernice, but isn't the demonstrative guy (kind of a Frank Barone character). Fish is just happy to be regular and above ground at this point in his career - hence the "seen it all" sort of attitude.

Wait 'til you see the werewolf ep - that one stills cracks me up - its silly, but I heard that this is the kind of real nutcase characters NYC cops have to deal with on a daily basis. They pick up some guy who thinks he's a werewolf and it just happens to be a full moon that night......

  Good stuff Solomon - hang in there pal!

Werewolf was hilarious and it did show the Fish character at his best; but as I mentioned earlier, I highly recommend to watch the 3rd season of Barney Miller with great episodes like Wereworlf and Hash...

Their 5th season was the show's most successful; also the 5th season had a lot of great and interesting eps as well :) Harris Incindent was not a HA HA episode but it was beautifully written and proves that Barney Miller can be more than just a sitcom...

OH - MY - GOD - Hasish!! My alltime favourite ep!!! :brent

Even the rat one was funny with Jack Soo and Wojo but the Hashish one will get me laughing just at the mention of it!

Oh - and I just thought of the one where they all had to take a turn dressing in drag to attract muggers in Central Park. That was also good. Yeah - the later seasons were better on reflection....

He DID didn't he!!! Trust Harris to find a beautiful silk wrap dress with matching purse and muff!! And it just about killed him to shave the mustache!

Wojo had to be the funniest!! As if a mugger would be fooled by this hulking gangly guy.

BM is definitely a show that you need patience with. I didn't like it at first, but for some reason I kept watching it and it eventually grew on me. I haven't seen the show in a couple of years, but I think overall, it was a decent show.

I will look at the ep of Barney Miller tonight when Charlotte Rae makes a guest appearance. That's because it won't be anything on TV-lol

I always liked Barney miller, but more so after Fish left and was replaced by the hilarious Deitrich , an intellectual, with the heart of a longshoreman....hed kill me expousing Proust one second and then making a 90 degree turn and asking if anyone caught the Rangers game the night before!:lol: he killed me!!! And, yeah the Hashish brownies ep was a watershed show for the time. Who can forget a totally Snockered Yamana answering the telephone ( in NY ) with a rather slurred "Moshi Moshi"?:rofl: < Ive seen where people took this as mushy mushy, but, its actually the traditional Japanese telephone greeting! { Moh-shee Moh-shee }

I still crack up like crazy just thinking of that episode. Yamana was fabulous in it! And yeah, the show definitely improved when Deitrich joined the cast. Love how he delivered his lines with that calm, cool, laid back, matter-of-fact way he had.

I also liked the one with the werewolf!

THIS is (in my opinion) the funniest episode of Barney Miller...

77 Hostage First Aired: March 23, 1978
Writer: Reinhold Weege
Story: Reinhold Weege, Chris Hayward
Director: Hal Linden
Guest Stars: Earle Towne, Oliver Clark, Don Calfa

A prisoner holds the precinct hostage; Harris finds an apartment in the Village; and a ventriloquist is held responsible for his dummy's lewd remarks.

Yeah, GREAT cast throughout. It's a shame they won't release the rest of the seasons when the show really picked up steam. I remember laughing out loud at the episode where they are ALL quarantined in the station, and Det. Lugar has to sleep in a cot right next to a gay couple. He starts singing to himself: "Thank heaven . . . thank heaven for little girls . . ."

Everyone has a different sense of humor and life experience, etc. I think that Barney Miller was the best tv show ever written and acted - just my opinion. So, I created the first web site dedicated to the BM show in 1999:
http://www.debw.com/barneymiller.html

589,649 hits later, I find that I am not alone in my opinion. I just had to sign up with a new server for the "Favorite Barney Miller Quotes" page, and read a lot of entries that I hadn't looked at before, of how much that show meant to some people, which kept them entertained and happy. A quality show, in my opinion.

Geez, discussing the show really makes me wish it was playing somewhere on some channel right now. I could use a dosing! I really should get the DVD set on it.
