I have ONE semester left in the current major I am in... and right now I am having soo many doubts about the field i've chosen. I really think I may have gone into the wrong field, but i've only got 1 semester left... how can I change now?

any college students out there ever been through this? what did you do to get through it?

and anyone who has changed... how did you know you needed to change?

i'm so confused

It sounds as though you're suffering burn-out. You're probably simply tired of school.

I guess the best way to find out whether your chosen field is right for you is to ask yourself whether the nature of the career still interests you.

Beyond that, I can't help. I'm only guessing.

Max is pretty right on to the point - it just sounds like you're suffering burnout. I haven't suffered burnout yet, and I will start my 4th semester in the fall. I was an English major when I started, but now I am majoring in journalism. I came to that conclusion when I realized, outside of my gen ed classes, all my classes were journalism-related. :)

I'm in Comp Sci major, and I've already taken it for two semesters. I've decided that I hate it with passion. I know because I have NO more interest in learning how to computer program. I know because I am sick and tired of attending that class every day for 88 minutes. Furthermore, I know because I will NEVER pursue this as a career. It's too ming-bloggling for me, and it's just plain hard.

So... that's how I know, LOL.

As for switching majors, I've been told my school does not allow this.... so I might have to put up with it for another 2 semesters (132 minutes a day, 5 days a week. :crying:  :crying: HELPPPP!!!).

In any case, the very fact that you are contemplating about changing your major is a sign that you may want to switch. But that's just my opinion. ;)

It is my opinion that anything career related...if you don't love it 100%, what's the point? You'll be doing it for the rest of your life. But I don't know the full thing because I'm only in highschool, so I don't know how it works...

And I'm in HS, too, but it's a specialized HS (needed to take an exam to get in), so we start having majors 2 years before everyone else. :o

I'm thinking about majoring in pyschology (if I can even spell the word LOL) or elementary education in college. No more comp sci for me... it has scared me to wits.

I say change your major! What major are you in now, BTW, MsOrange? and which do you want to change to?

That is very true. You must love what you do. Otherwise, from 9-5, you are simply existing. Unless you have no choice, like you have a family to support, you must love your job.

I haven't gotten there yet, but I know in the past year I've changed my mind at least 6 times on what major i want to be in when I do get there.

Ick...anything technical makes me crap myself. I could never even attempt anything like computer science. Good for you for trying :)

I'm not even in college yet and I change my mind about every other day. It's a bit late to change your major if you ask me.. I mean you can't do 7 semesters of a new major in just 1. I guess you could change if you're willing to stay in college. What's your major right now and what do you want to change to?

maybe it is just burnout---i mean, i have one more semester and i'm done, chaning my major now would be absolutley ridiculous, but i just can't get rid of this gut feeling in my stomach.... who knows, maybe i'm just PMSin

Yeah, you can change it but you're going to be there longer. There's a chance you'll have a worse burnout too. Most people don't go into the field that they've majored in anyway. I would finish what you're in because you've stuck with it so far. All of that time would be wasted for nothing.

You don't want to be one of those "switcheroo" kids either. I know several people that feel the need to change their majors just about every year. Needless to say, they've been there for a while and no one takes them seriously. Good luck.

What are you majoring in right now, if you don't mind me asking? At first I was a nursing major, and now I'm a journalism major. I don't really know why I went into nursing in the first place to be honest. Teachers from High School and recent Professors have told me to go into Journalism since the 9th grade. It's good to know that I can actually do something well.

Add yours truly to the list of people that originally signed on to a computer-related major (Computer Science), only to realize they didn't want to do that...(Major is now Broadcasting with emphasis on Radio & TV Operations)

That's great though. The only thing I know how to do on computers is type, and also Power Point presentations.

I've been thinking. You should probably stick with it. In all likelyhood you are burned-out. If you change majors now, it would mean more school and people may not take you seriously. That would equal even more burn-out.

I've heard that people don't always have a career in their major. The job industry mainly looks kindly upon the fact that you were dedicated enough to take the classes and devote time to your studies. If you stick with it, when this is over you will have a degree that should hold a lot of weight with a lot of people. You could probably get a job doing just about anything.

well i am sticking with it, i think you are all right, i'm just burned out. I haven't had a summer off in two years... i've been going straight on through the summer so I can get finished quicker. I guess I just need a vacation

I changed majors, hmm...2 times? Yeah. I started out as a Journalism major, I then transferred to a new school, but stayed with that major. Then I took a newspaper writing course, realized I totally despised that, and switched to Speech Comm cuz I had this lame idea to become a HS drama coach. Well, they told me I'd end up teaching English, plus I would have had to take this set building class and I'd rather stuff worms up my nose than either of those, so I switched to English Lit because I took a creative writing course that I thought was fun, and plus, it was easy. Am I doing anything in English now?? No way. Now I'm taking classes through www.pcdi.com (http://www.pcdi.com/) :)

I'd say just stick with it, get out for a semester to clear your head and destress, and then maybe go back, or take an online/by mail course like I am.

I did that too. I was in college for 5 years and I took a class every summer, so I was in school from August 1998-May 2003. By the last semester, I wanted to scream. That's probably why I got 2 C's that semester. :o

have you looked into any work co-op programs?

it should teach you a lot, and give you a better idea if it is really something that you want to do :)
