View Full Version : Was Michael kissing another man in drag in this ep??
GeorgiaboyJeff! 05-31-2005, 08:24 PM Ok, homosexuality isn't a big issue with me & I've been hearing rumors about his sexuality & what not. I don't know if this has been discussed before but I was watching an episode yesterday. The one where Florida was allergic to the plant & Michael ended up in jail. There was one scene where Florida was wondering where Michael was & she opened the door & there he was kissing a girl who wore a light blue dress. I don't know if my mind was playing tricks on me but I could have sworn that was a dude in drag. They didn't show much of the female. I just wanted to know what everyone thought?
vashti1999 05-31-2005, 08:43 PM It's been discussed, in this thread. (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=72667) If I've seen this episode, it's been a long time, so I don't remember. I have to wait until it's on dvd or shown on TV Land, but I have a hard time believing they would go through the trouble of having a guy dress like a girl just because Ralph Carter would rather kiss a guy.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 05-31-2005, 09:00 PM Thanks!!
nerrad 06-01-2005, 11:26 AM I can also remember this being discussed about a year or so ago. I'd had completely forgot about it and never watched it. Thanks for reminding us. As a matter of fact, I don't even own that particular episode.
nerrad 06-01-2005, 11:29 AM Exactly which episode is it. After reading the original thread, there seems to be a mixup in the title.
TVFactFan 06-09-2005, 11:07 AM I was the one who brung up this topic a year ago and yes it was a MAN in drag. There was no way that was a woman, it;s just no way. So that was proof right there that Ralph was Gay not that there is anything wrong with that-lol
nerrad 06-09-2005, 11:11 AM Was that the episode when Michael was kissing this person in the hallway. And Penny started giggling. :D

So you really think at that time Raplh Carter was all out and open to the cast and crew and they had a guy dress as a woman just so he wouldn't actually have to kiss a female? If you're that convinced, I can't wait to see this episode. I gotta see it for myself.
TVFactFan 06-09-2005, 11:13 AM Was that the episode when Michael was kissing this person in the hallway. And Penny started giggling. :D
Yup, you will be able to see it's a light skin man

I will bet my remaining paychecks of 2005 that the person Michael was kissing was a male. That's how convinced I am it was not a woman
nerrad 06-09-2005, 11:34 AM What season was that?
TVFactFan 06-09-2005, 11:53 AM What season was that?
Season 6
The more I see it, the more it does look like a man! oh my god, How come I didn't see this before? And i'm supposed to be the Good Times fan!
GARFIELDKOOL 06-11-2005, 09:28 AM I got that episode on tape. I had to keep looking at that. At first, it looked like a real girl, but when they show the hallway, when Penny and Kim Fields exit, the "girl" and Michael separated, and that's where you could tell that could be a dude. I can't believe after watching GT over and over like I have, I couldn't catch that. But, when you are into the show, you don't look for stuff like that.

Yeah that's true. If you were watching this ep for the first Time u probably wouldn't notice it. But Michael was either kissing a very UGLY girl or a Dude Dressed as a Woman-lol

Michael kissing a guy in drag is from season 6, not season 5. So you will have to wait atleast another year

I thought I'd have to wait until the season 6 dvd came out too, but hopefully TVLand will air this infamous scene so I can see what everyone's talking about.

TVFactFan 06-15-2005, 12:17 PM What was the name of that episode?
If you are talking about when Michael kissed the Guy in Drag, it's called "the Physical"
GeorgiaboyJeff! 06-15-2005, 05:40 PM I don't understand something. If that really was a dude, why wouldn't Ralph Carter want a female to kiss even if he's gay or not? I mean it's just acting, it's not like he would have to get involved with the female he's kissing & get married to her! I wondered if any of the audience members noticed that!?

It would have been impossible for the Studio Audience to notice, only the TV Viewers
nerrad 06-16-2005, 10:11 AM Then why would Michael kiss that other girl? I forgot the name of the eipsode, but they were having a party and they were locking lips like never before. Wait a minute!! It was when that guy tried kill himself in their apartment. She was the same girl Michael was afraid of in a previous episode. She liked JJ instead. Yvonne was her name.
vashti1999 06-16-2005, 10:20 AM It would have been impossible for the Studio Audience to notice, only the TV Viewers
Not necessarily. I'm sure the audience can see the actors moving around on the set when they're setting up for the scene. They're not seeing the shot from the same angle as the camera. Unless they had a bag before the person's head and took it off right before they shot the scene to hide the person's gender, the studio audience could probably tell.
nerrad 06-16-2005, 10:21 AM Michael was a bold..um guy.. to do that. I wonder what the cast members thought. However, maybe they didn't know that the female would actually be a man indrag. If they did knew, talk about keeping things under wraps for years. And it took us fans to peep it.

Yeah he did kiss the Girl who played Yvonne but I doubt if he enjoyed it-lol-LOL
nerrad 06-17-2005, 06:53 AM What was even funnier was what he said to JJ. Something to the effect, 'too bad you're not getting any'.

Brian it comes on Tonight at 11:30pm
vashti1999 07-24-2005, 11:46 PM I don't believe it. I thought it would be something obvious the way some of you guys were carrying on, but now that I've seen it for myself, I'm assuming that was a real female Michael was kissing. I'll admit for one split second at a certain angle I can see why you'd think it was a guy, but it just as easily been like someone said "an ugly girl."

Brian were you able to catch the ep with Michael kissing that guy with a WIG on?-LOL
vashti1999 07-24-2005, 11:51 PM On second thought...
I didn't know that scene continued after the commercial break. Now I'm not so sure. The arms and hands look feminine though.
Damn, I'm examining this scene like a ref reviewing a last second shot.

all you have to do is look at the face and the hair which is a WIG. Plus i think I noticed a mustache so it's defintely a GUY.
vashti1999 07-24-2005, 11:58 PM Sorry but that person was a GUY. Clearly it was a guy
Check my last post, I gave in a little. I wouldn't say CLEARLY but I can see your point.
vashti1999 07-25-2005, 12:01 AM all you have to do is look at the face and the hair which is a WIG. Plus i think I noticed a mustache so it's defintely a GUY.
There are girls who have mustaches.
I don't know, maybe it was a guy. I just have a hard time believing that they would go through the trouble of having a dude dress as a girl for Michael to do a kissing scene. It seems like a lot to go through.
Jonka 07-25-2005, 01:16 AM Um, I didn't see this. But I really don't understand why they would have a drag queen come on set to make out with someone. I don't know anything about how much time this person spent on screen, but unless that being a man having a big impact on the episode, I don't think they'd go to the trouble.
Probably an ugly girl.
the character Michael was kissing was not listed in the closing credits which confirms it was a male dressed as a female.
Yeah, that proves it.
Now, has this episode already aired on TV Land because I want to see for myself. Heh, I've become a Good Times fan literally overnight. Actually, not really a fan, but I like it and I'm posting in this board.
Ah, **** it. This is ludicrous.
Trishalla 07-25-2005, 10:33 AM wow

thats all I'm going to say on this one
Brian Damage 07-25-2005, 11:26 AM Brian were you able to catch the ep with Michael kissing that guy with a WIG on?-LOL
Well, I did see it and tape it. It really happens quick. Keep in mind, I was looking for a dude the whole time. I didn't see it when just watching the episode. I had to review the tape and I have to say, that did look like a guy.
I think that is sick if it really was a guy, because you had two little girls looking at that.
Yeah I saw the episode last night and it does look like a guy dressed as a girl.
nerrad 07-25-2005, 11:34 AM Ditto. I finally watched it last night and it surely does look like a "gump". :D
vashti1999 07-25-2005, 11:43 AM The thing that did it for me is the way he/she nodded after Florida broke up the kiss. It should have been a shy, embarassed feminine nod but it looked like he/she nodded like a guy would nod, not a girl.

It might just be acting, but if you were an actor and asked to kiss another guy for a scene, would you be willing to?
I wouldn't be surprised that the cast and crew were aware of his sexuality, but kept it quiet because he hadn't come out yet. Maybe he asked and they agreed to have a guy (maybe even his real life boyfriend) dress as a female for the scene.
What kills me is that you see females kissing each other (AS females) all the time on shows and nobody makes a big deal about it, but when a guy does it, its news for some reason.

Because two women kissing is more accepted than 2 men kissing in our society. When it comes to 2 women, guys don;t mind it and even so girls dont but two guys??? Guys or Girls are not interested in that crazy mess

The only thing about this situation is that it seems like an awfully lot to go through. It's not like that scene was so essential to the episode that they couldn't do the episode without that scene, or just have Ralph Carter be an actor and kiss a real girl. If I'm not mistaken he kissed a girl on a previous episode so it's strange to go through all of that (Having a guy dress as a girl) just so he'd be kissing someone he's more comfortable with. I don't have any problem with him kissing a guy. I think people just have a hard time believing that so much effort was put into making him feel comfortable for a two minute scene.

I'm a "girl" and I don't appreciate seeing two others lip-locked!!! As you know, I've got absolutely nothing against homosexuality, but it just kills me this double-standard. You can tell its still a "man's world" in television production, because I can assure you this trend wouldn't be happening if women were at the helm. It's still homosexuality either way you slice it - just a double-standard.
I know for a fact Solomon that you'd be slamming a show like crazy if they had two guys kissing on it (that wasn't a show geared to that lifestyle).
(sorry for going a bit off topic there!) :D

Oh I know - you've got a good point, but I'm just trying to figure out some sort of reason IF it were a guy - otherwise, again, it seems like a lot of trouble for an insignificant scene, so all I could think of was that it was a specific request for whatever reason.
Think of all the love scenes poor Rock Hudson had to endure throughout his career (maybe Ralph thought he was going to be the next Rock and wanted to nip that in the bud! )
TVFactFan 07-25-2005, 01:09 PM Honstly, i don;t want to either see that scene anymore because it's really hard to watch. I plan to fast forward in the future

Ireneparalegal 07-25-2005, 09:47 PM The young lady in question, regarding the episode whether Ralph Carter is kissing a guy in drag, is in fact a LADY. Her name is Sarina C. Grant. She also goes by the name Sarina Grant. She has appeared in the following:

Wrong. That's not who Michael was kissing. Sarina Grant was the darker skinned woman at the police station in that episode. She's appeared on more than one episode of Good Times. All it takes is watching the episode and paying attention to the credits to find this out.

You are NEW, DETAILED, and WRONG!!!!!!!!-LOL
Brian Damage 07-25-2005, 11:43 PM Kudos to Solomon for spotting it, because I would've never picked that up. My best guess, is that it was his real life boyfriend in drag. I mean you've got to be suspicious, because...
1. You never see "her" face.
2. The "girl" had no lines.

Florida's efforts to pass an important medical exam for work may be thwarted by a well meaning gift from the very children she cares about most. Things turn from bad to worse when Michael's attempts to deal with the troublesome gift land him in the city jail.
TripperFan 07-26-2005, 12:14 AM Ah NUTS - is THAT the episode? ARGH - I saw it in the guide yesterday, but thought it wasn't anything special so I missed THAT one too.
Crap - the two episodes I wanted to see most I missed.
Well, there ya go - either I wait for it to be run again on TVLand (julienned of course) or I at least rent the DVD....can anyone get a screen cap of it???
Ireneparalegal 07-27-2005, 07:14 PM Can someone with the DVD of this episode please check it out. When Michael mentioned the girl's name (the alleged "guy") he called her "Bessie". The closing credits listed Bessie being played by Sarina c.Grant. If I am wrong, I will admit it, but I specifically watched this episode to see what everyone was claiming and when her name was mentioned, I then checked the closing credits and from there searched on the internet to see if there were any photos/images of her. Just found the acting credits. Can anyone check this out for me?

The name of Michael's girl in this episode was Betty, not Bessie. Again, Bessie was the woman at the police station.

Nipsey Russell 07-29-2005, 11:51 AM I found this quote from Janet Jackson:
Janet received her first kiss from actor Ralph Carter. Janet recalls: "I was 12 years old, and it was our last episode of Good Times. He wanted to say good-bye. So he called me in the room and he gave me a kiss on my lips".
Apparently, Ralph wasn't totally opposed to kissing females. Maybe he just liked them young.
TripperFan 07-29-2005, 01:33 PM Is this the former Lady T? I didn't know that was you.
So THAT'S what happened to them!!! Geez!!
We should have some sort of page that can cross reference all these name changes!!
Back On Topic - if you can spot an adam's apple on BettyBen there - it'll be proof positive! "Man hands" are also a good clue, but I knew a petite chick who couldn't have ripped 10 lb lobsters apart, so its not definitive - the adams apple is tho! ;)

Jinxey 08-27-2005, 02:35 PM I was the one who brung up this topic a year ago and yes it was a MAN in drag. There was no way that was a woman, it;s just no way. So that was proof right there that Ralph was Gay not that there is anything wrong with that-lol
HAHAHAHA!!!!!
I thought so too when I saw the marathon on TV land. Can anyone prove this with a screen capture?
Also, what was the name on the closing credits?
Another thing I found strange about the episode was that Michael (just like JJ in the second-season episode JJ Becomes A Man) was arrested for a crime he didn't commit, and the real criminal looked like someone completely different.
You know it was time for Good Times to throw in the towel...lol

Brieannas21 08-27-2005, 04:49 PM LMAO, If it were a guy I think it would have come out by now. Look at the big deal Ellen and Roseanne had to go through.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 08-28-2005, 03:09 PM Evidently, it was probably his boyfriend at the time who he was kissing. So they had the other one dress up as a girl.Ralph's boyfriend was probably the jealous type.. I don't want no one kissing you but me!!

I'm with you Brieannas!!!!
julian bozo 09-07-2005, 11:34 PM In the episode a Friend in Need where they were having a party Michael was kissing a girl Yevone. I know for sure she was a girl. She was in a previous episode. I'm sure that was a guy in drag in the episode you are talking about.
Brieannas21 09-08-2005, 02:23 AM I can't believe that this topic is still being discussed.

Well Brieannas, it was a ODD thing to see on a sitcom, you have to admit.

I can't believe these people believe that too. Do you really think in this day and age that something like that would go undedected??? How could anyone make a judgment call like that on a scene with a person that appeared very very briefly, split seconds??? I have seen bad wigs on people, masculine looking hands on women, etc. Doesn't mean a thing. please don't answer my post. Just rhetorical questions. OMG, let's get a new thread on here. Pleeeeeeeeeze!!!!!! :p :p :p
