I watched some eps of Barney Miller Today and one of them dealt with the hot temperature and Barney and crew using a fan inside the station. So just wondering back during that time did all police stations lack air conditioners

Many places outside the midwest lack free standing window airconditioners because their windows arent usual built to accept them. They were a lot more expensive than now, like a lot of technology, and the police station was unlikely to have anything the city didn't buy for them. someone might be able to afford to bring a fan from home, but not an air conditioner - which many didnt have anyway.

Older buildings weren't equipped with them.

Don't forget that the 12th never had any money to do even basic repairs to the building...installing an air conditioner would totally be out of the realm of possibility!!

The fan in "Heat Wave" sure was...then at the end, they got a fan that worked so well it blew all Chano's papers across the room!

Yeah, and one of the recurring themes on Barney was how miserable they usually were (conditions-wise) working at the 12th, but they would always 'tough it out' and carry on. No way they'd ever be given the 'luxury' of A/C - LOL
