Just have the news on and they broke in with a report from Hollywood that Eddie Albert has died. Not sure if its on the net just yet so I don't have a link or written statement of it.

New York, NY, May 27, 2005 - TV Land will celebrate the life and work of late actor Eddie Albert -- who passed away on Thursday, May 26 in Southern California at the age of 99 -- with a special two hour Green Acres marathon airing on Monday, May 30 beginning at 8pm (ET/PT). Each episode featured in the two hour block was handpicked by TV Land and features some of Albert's most signature moments in his portrayal of "Oliver Wendell Douglas."

"We are deeply saddened by the death of Eddie Albert," said Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite. "Eddie had a wonderful career, providing laughter and entertainment for generations. He will truly be missed."

Born in Illinois and raised in Minneapolis, Eddie Albert started his career by working in the circus on the flying trapeze. In the summer of 1936, he made the switch to entertainment and appeared on television -- years before TV was introduced to the public -- in RCA/NBC's first private live performance for radio licensees in New York City. He then went on to star in his first film role in "Brother Rat" in 1938. Since then, he has appeared in dozens of films - including the original version of The Longest Yard in 1974, which was just remade and released this Friday. Over the course of his film career, Mr. Albert received two Oscar nominations: one for best supporting actor in William Wyler's "Roman Holiday" (1953) and another best supporting actor nod for "The Heartbreak Kid" (1972). Although he was acknowledged for his film work, Mr. Albert was most recognized for his starring role as "Oliver Wendell Douglas" in Green Acres opposite Eva Gabor. The series lasted six years (1965-1971) but will forever be remembered.

So very sorry to hear about him. We have watched Green Acres over the yrs ever since it first came on tv in the 60's when I was a kid. So many gone from this show. Eb Dawson is one of the few left from this show. RIP Oliver Wendell Douglas...

I love Green Acres, and Eddie Albert was awesome.

Isn't it a little ironic that Eva Gabor also died of pneumonia (the illness that took Eddie Albert's life) nearly ten years ago (7/4/95)?

Also, isn't it ironic that Paul Henning, creator of Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, and The Beverly Hillbillies passed away in March of this year as well?

One thing is for sure, he was blessed with a long life.

Also ironic that he died the week that The Longest Yard is being re-released.

I'll be watching the mini-marathon for sure.

'Green Acres' star Eddie Albert dies

Two-time Oscar nominee Eddie Albert, best known as the befuddled Park Avenue lawyer who sought happiness down on the farm in television's "Green Acres," has died at his Los Angeles-area home. He was 99.


Albert, a life-long fitness enthusiast who was still doing pushups and shooting baskets from his wheelchair in his driveway until last month, succumbed to complications from pneumonia after a bout of flu, publicist Dick Guttman said.

His son, Edward, was holding his hand and other loved ones were at his bedside at the end. "He died so beautifully and so gracefully that literally this morning I don't feel grief, I don't feel loss," Edward said.

Albert, a prolific actor whose career spanned nearly six decades and included roles in more than 250 movies, TV shows and stage productions, developed Alzheimer's disease 10 years ago but was still happy and active, his family said.

The Illinois-born star, whose full name was Edward Albert Heimberger, made his Hollywood debut in the 1938 picture "Brother Rat," co-starring with another little-known performer of that era, Ronald Reagan.

He went on to earn Academy Award nominations as Best Supporting Actor for his 1953 role as Gregory Peck's photographer sidekick in "Roman Holiday" and his 1972 role as Cybill Shepherd's father in "The Heartbreak Kid."

But Albert's greatest popularity came on "Green Acres" from 1965 to 1971 as Oliver Douglas, a lawyer who settles in a rural town with his glamorous wife, Eva Gabor, and finds himself perplexed by the antics of a host of eccentrics, including a pig named Arnold Ziffel.

Albert left Hollywood during World War II and served in the Navy, where he saw combat in the South Pacific. He won a Bronze Star for his heroic rescue of wounded Marines on the island of Tarawa, his son said.

His other films included "Carrie," "Oklahoma!," "The Roots of Heaven," "The Longest Day," "Miracle of the White Stallions," "The Longest Yard" and "Escape to Witch Mountain." He was married to the dancer-actress Margo for 40 years until her death in 1985. In addition to his son, Albert is survived by a daughter, Maria Albert Zucht, and two granddaughters.

Eddie Albert was a great actor, I'll miss him.

He was in an episode of Murder, She Wrote and he was a politicians husband. I won't say what happens, but it was a far cry from Oliver Wendell Douglas.

I really enjoyed his performance on this show. He lived a great life for many years!!

I know - I've seen him in other things (just can't remember specifics at the moment - maybe a Columbo ep??) where he plays a villian or something and he's good at it too.

Amazing too how he worked in the circus when young. No wonder he could handle those tumbles down the telephone pole.
I hope somebody thought to put a cellphone in his casket with him - poor guy sure earned it. ;)

Eddie Albert was definitely the key to Green Acres success. Though he yelled at Lisa, Hank Kimball and others a lot, his portrayal of Oliver Wendell Douglas was outstanding, especially when he did his farmwork in a suit and tie. A plus for his rendition of the classic theme song. It showed his experience in Broadway musicals and his ability to get up to that near-yodel on the line "Farm living is the life for me." Somewhere in heaven, he'll be singing the Green Acres theme for many years.

Yes he was in an episode of Columbo. I believe the first year of Episodes. He played a retired colonel? and Suzanne Plesette saw the murder he committed. I didn't know Eddie had a daughter. I knew of Edward his son. I don't remember Eddie playing on Falcon Crest for I thought his son did. The names are so similar.

I always knew that watching Adam Sandler act had a strange effect on people but this is too much!


"Green Acres" is one of my favorite shows and Eddie Albert is a big reason why. With all the assorted kooks and weirdos that lived on the farm he was a great straight man. He may not have understood them and he never figured out why he could never fit in, but over time all the people of Hooterville had come to love and respect him, along with about 40 million or so viewers. He may be gone but the show still goes on, in reruns and on DVD, and I will keep watching it until Mr. Haney turns honest! God Bless Eddie Albert!

And here he was, a rich, educated man who could have looked down on them all, but was always so sweet and trying to fit in. I'm picturing him sitting at the Shady Rest playing guitar with Uncle Joe crashing those cymbals behind him and him muttering...."OOOOoooh you miserable......."

I heard the sad news on another message board :( Its terribly sad that he died :( He was such a wonderful guy, and plus I LOVED him in Oklahoma and Green Acres :) But, at least he left us all some wonderful shows and memories from watching them :) Rest in peace Eddie Albert, we'll all miss you too :(

I saw a Hollywood Backstories - or similar show - about Eddie Albert. I'd always enjoyed his work but for some reason I have always had a great love for Green Acres. I was thrilled to learn what a fantastic man he was beside his abilities as an actor. 99? I think he lived every day well!

I LOVED him in Roman Holiday!

This January I read the book Pride of the Yankees, the Lou Gehrig story and one of the choices to play Lou was Eddie Albert. Eventually Gary Cooper got the part .

He's in a movie with Lucille Ball as her boyfriend called "The Fuller Brush Girl". I DVRd it a while ago and haven't watched it all yet, but it looks really good.
