View Full Version : Mariah gets her 16th #1
HuntingtonM15 05-26-2005, 07:37 AM "We Belong Together" is #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart!
After a great increase in both digital sales and airplay over the past week, "We Belong Together" jumps one spot up to #1 on its 8th week on the chart and becomes Mariah's 16th #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100.
Performer and songwriter Mariah Carey secures her place as the #1 most successful female artist of all time as We Belong Together becomes her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only artist in contention to surpass the Beatles (with 20 #1’s) and Elvis Presley (18 #1’s) in the modern era. (With 62 total weeks of #1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks.) This monumental achievement comes as Mariah’s brand new Island Def Jam album, the top 5 THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, crosses the RIAA double-platinum mark of 2 million units, just 6 weeks after its stunning #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

If someone had told me a year ago that Mariah would have a #1 single today, I probably wouldn't have believed it.
Superstar 05-26-2005, 09:23 AM I don't really like that song, Its Like That is better, but congrats to her.
MonarC 05-26-2005, 01:47 PM that is so awesome. Im so happy for Mimi. :D

Same here. I'm happy for her though, it's good that she's been able to bounce back after some down years. I like the song too.
Dean Winchester 05-26-2005, 03:44 PM I was happy about her hitting #1 until I heard about the "free download" stunt on itunes last week. This is the same crap Sony used to pull in the late 90's with 49 cent cd singles, I think all songs should've been free that day instead of making Mariah's song free while everything else was 99 cents, it would've been more fair.
I can't believe at this point in Mariah's career, she's pulling stunts for #1 hits, especially since this song was getting the airplay she could've earned it anyways. Oh well, old dogs don't learn new tricks
vashti1999 05-26-2005, 03:48 PM Does Billboard take internet downloads into account on the Hot 100?

yep, Billboard started counting for paid-downloads at places such as Itunes and Napster back in February. That explains how Coldplay managed to debut at #8 on the singles chart, and how Weezer's Beverly Hills has had a really wild rollercoaster ride on the chart (it debuted at #25, then moved to #13 the next week, then dropped to #38, and then suddenly was out of the top 50 for a couple weeks and rocketed back up to #21).
SBTB Geek 05-26-2005, 04:14 PM Congrats to her. Hopefully "Shake It Off" and "Say Something" do the same.
HuntingtonM15 05-26-2005, 04:19 PM It doesn't even make sense as to why they would do that. The single would have been #1 anyway without that, possibly even this week. I'm looking forward to Shake It Off.

Dammit, how come nobody told me? I could have saved .99!!!
I imagine that Billboard will eventually amend the charts where the downloads of a song when it's offered for free won't be counted, like how they changed things after Prince's Musicology cd giveaway at his concerts last year.

personally, I think it'd be smart for Billboard to also count illegal downloads too. That way, a "free on I-Tunes" thing doesn't really help anything because other people have taken the song free already, lol.
Janet McFarland 05-26-2005, 10:44 PM Congrats to her. I love that song :D
Hollow 05-26-2005, 11:06 PM congratulations to her.
Brian Damage 05-26-2005, 11:12 PM Nice comeback
factsoflife 05-31-2005, 05:24 PM I am so happy for Mariah... WBT is an amazing song, one of her best in a long time... and i'm glad Mariah is able to get back to her ballad roots!
vashti1999 05-31-2005, 06:54 PM Carey earns her 16th No. 1 with "We Belong Together". This new chart-topper keeps Carey in third place among all artists with the most No. 1s in the rock era, but inches her ever closer to matching and surpassing Elvis Presley's second-place total of 17 No. 1 hits. The Beatles remain in first place with 20.
"We Belong Together" is Carey's first No. 1 on the Hot 100 without any featured artists in seven years and one week, since "My All" topped the chart the week of May 23, 1998.
Rhiannon 05-31-2005, 07:29 PM she's just too good.

that should be a sign to Mariah. She and her fans can bash the pre-Butterfly albums all she wants, but it was those albums and singles that really laid the groundwork for her success. Daydream alone sold more copies than Rainbow, Glitter and Charmbracelet combined, as did her debut album and Music Box.

I agree. 11 of those 16 #1s came before Butterfly.
Dean Winchester 05-31-2005, 10:10 PM I like a lot of Mariah's music, but I do think her AOL fans are worse than any other artists set of fans, and I can tell you, Madonna fans are bad, yet nowhere as bad.
But here are quotes :
(about someone saying that she has yet to reach Beatles iconic status) "THAT'S WHY SHE HAS MADE ALOT OF MILLIONS AND IS A LEGEND. SHE WILL BE REMEMBERED. UNLIKE THESE OTHER WANNABES THAT WON'T BE REMEMBERED AT ALL.
WHO CARES ABOUT THE BEATTLES AND ELVIS? THEY WERE BEFORE MY TIME AND ALL OF THEIR SONGS SUCK. THEY SOLD BECAUSE OF THE OLDTIMERS LOVE THEM.
SO THE BEATLES AND ELVIS HAD CREATIVE PASSION BEHIND THEIR SONGS? NO. JUST ALOT OF TEENAGERS THAT WERE SCREAMING FOR THEM."
(and another) "I'm sorry but Mariah is the most talented artist ever in the world. She wouldn't have so many #1 songs if it weren't true. She makes The Beatles and Elvis and all the other so-called talents look like jokes. She is the artist of the Millennium."
(and another) "Some people who are less talented and have sold less albums than Mariah Carey:
michael jackson
elvis
diana ross
the beatles
the eagles
madonna
led zepplin
jimi hendrix
arethra franklin
pink floyd
barbara streisand
celine dion
U2
chuck berry
prince
aerosmith
bob dylan
greatful dead
whitney houston
the doors
They all wish they had half the talent of Mariah Carey! "
I think Mariah is a fantastic singer, but looking at her AOL board, I realize why I lost interest in her in the late 90's like I did, considering the way some of the lambs are.
Am I the only person who thinks you can be a fan of more than one successful female artist? Mariah fans on AOL are notorious for hating J. Lo, Madonna and Celine, and Madonna fans are notorious for hating Mariah and Janet, and Whitney fans on AOL seem to hate all. But, I think every one of them have redeeming qualities
HuntingtonM15 06-01-2005, 04:32 PM It's #1 for a second week
