View Full Version : The Truth about TVLand!!
eddie146 05-24-2005, 10:03 AM I saw this quote about how the way TVLAND is these days. It pretty much sums it up!!
"consider the source....TV LAND! look who else they consider icons! roseanne!!! alf!!! look at their "classic tv"...."highway to heaven"..."hunter"..."wings"..... so many others!
tv land's problem is, it's programmed by 20-30 year olds for old farts like me in their 40's to 50's...... "
I believe this quote pertains to the tvland show chasing Farrah!!
TripperFan 05-24-2005, 10:21 AM What they don't realize is that us old farts could care less about Farrah now! Just like everyone else!
James"Thunder"Early 05-24-2005, 10:23 AM If they wanted to show Farrah, they should have just put Charlie's Angels back on.
TripperFan 05-24-2005, 10:50 AM If they wanted to show Farrah, they should have just put Charlie's Angels back on.
Exactly!!!
I mean, I LOVED Barney Fife, but I wouldn't be interested in a show about what he's doing these days!!!
eddie146 05-24-2005, 11:02 AM tvland should just keep shows from the 50's and 60's on and let nick at night show the shows from the 70's and 80's. I believe they did this about 4 or 5 years ago!! let tbs and tnt and other stations show the shows from the 90's and after!!
dlemond 05-24-2005, 11:10 AM tvland should just keep shows from the 50's and 60's on and let nick at night show the shows from the 70's and 80's. I believe they did this about 4 or 5 years ago!! let tbs and tnt and other stations show the shows from the 90's and after!!
I can agree about the '80s, but the '70?
That was the best decade of sitcoms.
If TV Land only showed shows from the '70s (dramas included) it would be far better than it is now.
Brian Damage 05-24-2005, 11:15 AM If TV Land only showed shows from the '70s (dramas included) it would be far better than it is now.
I agree
dave insinga 05-24-2005, 11:22 AM if the would stick to sitcoms instead of westerns, cop shows, dramas,it would be much better.nick at night isn't much better its the same few shows over and over .i felt both were better a few years back.

Yeah okay whatever. If Hunter aint classic tv then I don't know what is. Just because you may not like a show, doesn't mean it's not a classic. And it always amazes me how people like to begrudge other people about seeing their favorite shows. It's not our fault TVLAND chose to air Wings, we're just happy because we don't get to see it on any other channels  Wings is 15 years old, in the television world that's considered classic
dave insinga 05-24-2005, 11:35 AM i just feel both were better a few years back no need to bite my head off, i like hunter, not thrilled about bonaza but hunter is ok .

The problem with this quote is that it is not true. Roseanne has never aired on TV Land. It is on Nick@Nite. ALF's Hit Talk Show was just for 6 episodes and has not aired since December. Wings is no longer on TV Land, as of now. Chasing Farrah was just 7 episodes and is no longer airing.
Highway to Heaven and Hunter are 80s, but at least they are not 90s. Highway to Heaven will just be airing in the afternoon starting next week anyway.
spunkygirl 05-24-2005, 11:53 AM Great post Pav :)
I don't what it is, why some people think that 80's shows can't be considered "classics" I mean there are shows I don't like but I don't deny they're classics
dave insinga 05-24-2005, 12:24 PM lets keep in mind the 80's were 20 years ago thats classic as far as im concerned.
eddie146 05-24-2005, 01:08 PM come on tvland is bad these days, how many times can you watch bonanza, gunsmoke,h to h, hunter geez get rid if hunter!! cheers was played out on wpix for years, put cheers to rest for awhile!!
EdBrownJr 05-24-2005, 01:21 PM they need another channel....like a tvland 2 or something.....
barwars 05-24-2005, 03:58 PM Hunter, classic? Yeah, thats it.
Anyways, I think TVLand is in a good place now. Well, they have good shows, just bad programming. But I don't really care, I just stick to DVDs.
Mr. Television 05-24-2005, 05:24 PM Hunter and Highway To Heaven are classics, as is Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Just because you don't like them doesn't make it so. I'll agree with you about Chasing Farrah though. I've always liked her but if they are going to showcase her then show Charlie's Angels.
Dean Winchester 05-24-2005, 06:01 PM why do people get so ageist (well, maybe "newist" is a better term) to shows that the youngest KID character isn't in their 50's yet?
Yes, I agree TV Land should show more classic programming, and less double-takes, but come on. You are certainly biased to older shows if you seriously think that in 2005, that Cheers, The Cosby Show, Roseanne and Seinfeld AREN'T classics. It's good that you prefer the shows from the 50's and 60's, but why are some people such nazis when it comes to their old shows that they view everything after 1977 or so to be "fly by night shows nobody will remember when they're 30 years old"? There are plenty of shows from the 80's that are certainly classics, and even a few from the 90's (I think it's too soon after Frasier and Friends wrapped before they are coined classics, in about 5 years, they definately will be though). Just because a show isn't as old as The Honeymooners or Lucy doesn't mean it's less worthy of being regarded as a classic.
barwars 05-24-2005, 07:14 PM Hunter and Highway To Heaven are classics, as is Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Just because you don't like them doesn't make it so. I'll agree with you about Chasing Farrah though. I've always liked her but if they are going to showcase her then show Charlie's Angels.
I don't like Gunsmoke nor Bonanza.... but I know they're classics.
Hunter not being a classic isn't because its a more recent program.... its because it's not that good. Other shows from the time, Knight Rider, The A-Team and Hill Street Blues are all classics. But Hunter and Highway to Heaven?? No. Little House On The Prarie is another series I don't like, but don't deny it being a classic.
Just as classics can be from any time period.... being from a certain time period doesn't instantly make you a classic.

Hunter and Highway To Heaven were both top 20 shows during the time they aired. Both were higher rated at the time then Hill Street Blues. I know Hunter has been in syndication for many years. I happen to think they are very good shows. On the other hand I cannot stand Friends or Frasier but I will say that when its all said and done they will be considered classics.
For the record, Hill Street Blues got its ass beat extremely in the ratings by none other than...KNOTS LANDING!!! And when LA Law replaced HSB in 1987, KL was beating LL too!
Of course that is OT, but I still had to say it!

Knots Landing is another series I don't really like, but I would never not consider it a classic.

As long as you realize its class:P
Just kidding...or am I?

That would suck worse than it does now. TV Land is great for the fact that they don't just show sitcoms.
But they just need to show different stuff than they do now.

Knight Rider?? I wouldn't exactly consider that classic. Cult classic, maybe. But I wouldn't categorize it with Hill Street Blues.
silvana 05-24-2005, 10:48 PM I agree with eddie, those shows(hunter, wings, etc) just suck period, classic or not!!
Dean Winchester 05-24-2005, 11:20 PM I agree with eddie, those shows(hunter, wings, etc) just suck period, classic or not!!
I personally would rank Wings at the bottom of the pile of the shows by those producers (Cheers and especially Frasier were a lot better IMO), I used to like it in 1994, but haven't since. However, you are pissing off like 75% of the SO population by saying it sucks, without a "IMO" or anything. Besides Cheers and Three's Company, it's probably the best loved series on SO.
Mr. Television 05-24-2005, 11:34 PM I agree with eddie, those shows(hunter, wings, etc) just suck period, classic or not!!
And thats just your opinion. Not every classic show is liked by everybody.
rodwayne 05-25-2005, 05:01 PM It depend on what you would considered a classic before you define a show a classic.I always thought that a classic should be a show that in 20 to 30 years will be just as funny as it was when it was frist on.There are exception to the rules.I Love Lucy is a classic despite the fact the ol' "husband vs wife" scenario seems dated. In fact all of the sitcoms in the 50's and 60's are "dated" because it shows a perfect world without problems when we knew better, but that don't make them less than a classic.Same for any shows in the 70's,80's,and even the 90's!Just because someone don't like a show doesn't mean that it's not a classic.Same also could be say about a top rated show;just because it was let's say in the top 25 in ratings doesn't mean that the show is a classic.I wish that they would do what Game Show Network did:go back to the frist year that they was on,and get rid of all of this garabage they are about to put on.The exceptions I would make is Inside T.V. Land.At least they will give you an inside look at the T.V. shows that's on T.V. Land. Also,The classic movies of the week. That I wouldn't mind so much and maybe the occasional specials as long as they remember that this is suppose to be a classic channel and not run the specials into the ground.I just wish that they would have took off all of the shows that been showing forever, and put on classics that they had on in the past.
Coffeecup 05-31-2005, 09:27 PM I generally like TVLAND but I do find there are too many shows that seem to be just on yesterday. I prefer shows from 25 years ago or more. So not Cheers, Hunter, Highway to Heaven. THey do need a few diffent shows but I guess the public eats up Bonanza and Gunsmoke. There is a possibilty that Tvland can't get older shows and has to make do with Wings and other 80's shows. Most shows from the 80's to the present I didn't or don't watch so if they pop up on tvland I just change the channel to say Hallmark or American Life. One thing they do which I think is so warm is dedicate a show to a departing actor. I see they flash Eddie Albert's life dates when Green Acres airs
seventies_sitcoms 06-06-2005, 01:33 PM If you're not a Cheers, Three's Company, or Bonanza fanatic there is no use for TV Land.
Uh...Three's Company airs four times a day, at 10:00pm, 10:30pm, 1:00am, and 1:30am. That is hardly overplaying, if you ask me, especially when it's preempted half the time by originals.
